Most ER folks are this odd combo of super relaxed, because the line of worth actually getting worked up is “is anybody actively dying right now? This means vfib, asystole, PEA? Then nothing getting excited about. I will add in pediatric respiratory arrest to the mix because kids are weird. Cross the definition by ER of time to get excited and the laid back, bring it mentality turns 180 to hyper focused and active, in the moment.

Orthopedics rarely takes on this role themselves, and instead "admit to medicine" to have the internal or general medicine doctors in charge of the overall care even if the patient is in for a broken hip. The main reason is so the patient's other conditions can be managed so the patient can safely have their orthopedic surgery (the "OR tomorrow" part, with OR meaning operating room/theater). "NPO @ MN" just refers to an order for the patient to have nothing to eat or drink after midnight so they can have their surgery the next day.

There are many times when I will smile or silently chuckle when reading or watching something funny. Very, very rarely will I literally LOL. Seeing neurosurgery's smile was one of those times. Seeing his smile again was another one of those times.
The number 2 ranked guy in my med school class went into neurosurgery. In residency I did anesthesia for him 5 years later and he had no clue that we went to med school together and he was never seen smiling again.

I laughed so hard when Emergency showed his new reflex hammer. That’s very accurate I saw those in ER use stethoscope as a reflex hammer, but I once saw Ortho resident used the angle of his smartphone as a reflex hammer while I was in ortho rotation and It WORKED!
I’m an ER doctor and I’ve only ever encountered nice and helpful neurologists. Also the fact that the “new reflex hammer” is even being used is hilarious. I used to test reflexes with my stethoscope but now I can’t remember the last time I even tested a reflex… or used my stethoscope to auscultate heart sounds lol
