Funny to think, that this comes from you. Because I just watched this movie once wth my mom. When I was drunk!
Well, not really drunk, but I drank, I was not sober. And I remember thinking, it wasn´t really THAAAAAAAT bad, as everyone on the internet would try to make me to think.

Well its also much older comedy. Thats what comedy usually is an exaggeration of aspects of reality that we often are uncomfortable discussing. Look at blazing saddles. That entire town was an exaggeration. The real problem with most modern comedy, fortunately there are exceptions, can be summed up by comparing the original with this remake. The best scenes to compare would be the ones where they are discussing going into business for themselves.

The funniest part about that is the 2016 movie made it clear that the original movies never took place in their universe (despite the trailer acknowledging the original movies existence). By doing that they made it so they could never be referenced in a movie connected to the original's timeline, because it wouldn't make sense. By doing everything in their power to say the film was its own thing and that these new characters were the originals (in their canon), they cut themselves off from any future Ghostbusters work outside of their own specific series. They did this to themselves.

    • @Jakedman21

Ghostbusters 2016 was never in the timeline with the original movies. It was its own universe. That quote wasn't added to retcon GB2016, it was just a statement that a ghost hasn't been seen since Ghostbusters 2.

I recently started watching some of the older SNL skits, and to be honest, I can't understand how anyone found SNL funny. So much of the "humor" felt forced, awkward, and uncomfortable. Almost as if the actors and comedians were in an improv session that they never took classes for and were trying desperately to come off as mildly amusing. The only parts of SNL that I ever considered remotely entertaining were the parody commercials, a few bits of Chevy Chase's news broadcasts, and the Mr. Bill show. Modern SNL doesn't even pretend it's trying to be funny; it's just pseudo-political banter and bashing conservatives.

This is a very good way to put it. I actually did enjoy the 2016 in theatres in the sense it was a fun watch, I actually saw it twice believe it or not. But objectively it was not a good movie. It wasn't charming enough for re-watches over time like the original or other movies in a similar vein. like many reboots these days, it's just filled with a pandering Hollywood vibe with very blunt plots, jokes, and metaphors. I can see why kids would enjoy it or maybe those who are already fans of the cast (even though they've all been in better) but it doesn't have the same universal appeal at all

I have an explanation for that. People today are infantilized. They have their hands held through 13 years of what we laughingly call 'primary and secondary education,' before having their hands held more in colleges where they drink, do drugs, and screw each other with abandon. It is typical now for young aspiring writers to graduate college and enter the workforce in their mid-twenties poorly educated and utterly inexperienced, without ever having had to struggle for anything, deal with their own mistakes, or fight in so much as a schoolyard squabble. They are, in meaningful ways, little kids.
Contrast: Legendary comedian Mel Brooks was drafted into the Army at the age of 18 and served in Europe during WW2. He started doing stand-up by taking initiative when a comedian got sick and couldn't go on. By the time he got his first off-the-books job writing (uncredited) jokes for television, he was a war veteran with actual performance experience. By the time he performed in front of real cameras on the Steve Allen Show, he was in his mid-thirties, married with kids. He was an *adult.*
He was also self-deprecating and clever, instead of self-righteous and posturing like modern children. A fun quote talking about an early mentor: "One day he handed me a book. He said to me, 'Mel, you're an animal from Brooklyn, but I think you have the beginnings of something called a mind.'"
You ever hung around teenagers desperately trying to be funny, but only managing the most obvious, hackneyed, cringey humor? That's Hollywood writing and for basically the same reason.

There is literally no subtlety in comedy anymore. Some is either yelling, waving their arms around, making a stupid face, falling down, breaking something, etc... Clever writing, good timing, double entendre, and wit are lost arts. Female comedy actors especially rely on being way over the top and wacky to paper over the fact that they aren’t actually funny. This is the only thing I saw that was actually clever and made me chuckle. I used to have a friend who bragged about his 20/20 vision (yet couldn't read a damn road sign) and talked about getting lensless glasses solely so that he would "look smarter". He also would use the term "skinny" as a compliment towards women, and said it was best to try and date chubbier chicks because they have low self-esteem and you could "train them to work out so they would get hot". Oh, he also had a fondness for date-raping women. I tried to have a candid heart-to-heart with him about all this so he could try and improve as a person, but his response was "Keep talking to me like that and I'll hit you."... So I jacked him in the face, he fell backwards off the picnic table he was sitting on, and I left him on the ground outside the bar. He never came back inside after that, and haven't talked to him since.
I know nobody probably cared to hear this story, but lensless glasses always make me think of that absolute joke of a "man".

Fun fact- they filmed the ending scene in the town I use to live and work in. The same set was before used for the boston Marathon bombing movie, and recycled for ghost busters.
I actually cut the hair of one of the guys who did lighting and settings. He had worked on many movies and seen many failures.
Many kids I went to school with can be seen as extras at the end during the time square scene.
I asked him "do you think the movie is going to be good?"
All he said was- "I worked on many films, I know when one is going to fail"
    That was in 2014.
If you know where I'm talking about in Mass you can still see some of the set on google earth. They left the facade set up years after and it's an eyesore.
