I was fortunate to see Eric Porter on stage when he played the title role in Becket back in 1961 -when we were taken to see a matinee by a school teacher. We all thought he was absolutely brilliant. I was voted to write a "fan letter" to him on behalf of everyone saying how much we enjoyed his performance. We were thrilled to get a handwritten letter back from him thanking us. His portrayal of Soames Forsyte is truly one of the all time greats of TV.
Eric Porter - what a marvellous actor. I admired him since I saw him in The Forsythe Saga as a child, and (apart from The Lost Continent *coughs*) he was wonderful in anything. The ultimate Moriarty, of course. I'm so glad I could see him live on stage in Twelfth Night as Malvolio. So many years ago, we won't see his likes again ...

He has the best lines in THE LOST CONTINENT (1968). In fact, he was the best thing about the entire film.

Eric Porter was a brilliant talent. The best Polonius, Alexsei Karenin, and Moriarty ever put on film. Porter was 1 of those actors who didn't know how to give a mediocre performance. I only wish one or both of his King Lears had been filmed. He must have been a thrilling presence on stage.

Eric Porter is Professor Moriarty forever. Period.
Totally under-rated actor. Saw him as Henry IV at the Old Vic in 1956 and as Becket with Christopher Plummer. He never got the credit and fame he deserved.
