Europe in Thailand: take an architectonic journey through the heritage buildings of Bangkok
At the start of the 19 th Century, Bangkok expanded from the banks of the Chao Phraya river. Since then and still today, Europeans have helped to build the city.Through a series of four videos, the European Union and The Cloud Magazine uncover unique aspects of historic buildings of Bangkok. This walk through history reminds us of the long friendship and collaboration between Thailand and European countries. It also shows that heritage must be preserved for Bangkok to keep growing as a sustainable city.
Thailand has long been welcoming people of different nationalities and beliefs, as seen from several ancient religious sites in Bangkok’s Old Town. The Cloud, together with the European Union in Thailand highlight the unknown details of three historic religious sites inspired by European architecture. The tour starts with the Kalawar Catholic Gothic-style Church of the Thai-Chinese-Portugese communities in Talat Noi area, carries on to by the European-style Mosque in the centre of Yaowarat and ends at the Royal Burial Ground at Wat Ratchabophit Sathitmahasimaram, the Royal Monastery Ground where Thai-Buddhist architecture exquisitely combines with European art.
