I just bought the Cutie frame and am sewing my practice panel that came with it. I am already addicted and can't wait to start practicing as soon as I get off of work! Thank you for the tutorial. it is very informative! What a darling baby quilt! ❤️
thank you for making such great videos about the cutie frame.. there are so few that go into the meat and potatoes of what it's really like quilting on it .. So wonderful !
This frame is so worth the money if you don't have a lot of space. I use my Juki on mine and it works well for now. That is a really cute quilt. Thanks for the tip on starting in the middle. I usually do that when I am free motion quilting but haven't tried it on my Cutie frame.Great idea.
I have never run into problems with spray base on my quilts. I use flannel and minky fabric on 95 % of my quilts. I also use a indoor outdoor fabric for my leader and bungee clips for side
Excellent video. I'm waiting for my Cutie Frame to arrive. This has been quite helpful in preparing me on what I need to do to get started and ready. Thanks so much!!! #subscribed
I am excited for you. It is a fun little frame that serves it's purpose for those of us with very limited space! If you have any questions or ideas for content, let me know and I can see if I can put something together.
Hi Fog Dog 🙂, I'm very new to all this, but I've been bitten by the bug. I just got the Juki TL18 and the Cutie frame yesterday. Already, I'm finding the 8.5" throat restrictive, but I'm going to have to deal with it since my budget just doesn't allow for one of these higher end machines. Is there any chance you have any videos using your Juki? I'd like to see how you manage the smaller throat. And were you able to do ruler work on the smaller throat machine? Thanks in advance. I LOVE your videos!! Very helpful.
Oh my gosh, I wish I could help you out with this. I only quilted one quilt with my Juki on the Curie frame before I upgraded to the Qnique19. I made the jump because of the limited throat space. I know it can be done. You just have to think about things differently.
@@FogDogStudios actually, I decided today to return the whole setup for that very reason. I made an impulsive decision because the local shop gave me a fabulous deal. May as well save up and wait. Thanks for your response. Your videos are amazing!! I'm just going to use my new-to-me Crescendo until I can make a wiser decision. You inspired me to try out ruler work on it.
Oh thank you so very much. I wish I had a quick pattern to share, but I didn't use a pattern for this quilt. I simply created the same block alternating the star/background fabrics. Four of one and Five of the other to make a baby quilt. The blocks were about 16" each. The fabric was a vintage cowboy fabric mixed with a navy bandana with baby blue minky on the back.
I really like to watch your journey. You make me want the cutie frame and q'nique 19. I'll have to settle with my domestic machine for now. I have a lot of money tied up in quilting rulers for domestic machines. But I'm not going to let that keep me from getting a long arm machine. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos. Have you seen where people are using laser light on the front of the long arm to quilt designs?
Thank you! It has been a very fun learning experience! I use the same rulers for my Qnique19 and my domestic (Baby Lock Lyric). I have seen the laser work. I haven't decided yet if that is something I want to try. I really like FMQ and ruler work. You will get a long arm when the time is right. I chose the Qnique19 because eventually I will upgrade to 10' or 12' table...eventually. I really do like the simplicity of the Cutie frame. Thank you for watching.
So glad I found you again :-} This Video is going to get me going again on my quilt. I messed up and didn't use a ruler so I did the usual "ripping out". I am again inspired. Thanks so much for this show. Keep them coming please. Pami, AKA Grammie Pami
You are so welcome! Anyone that quilts will use a seam ripper from time to time! I had to rip out a whole bunch of blocks because I pieced them together backwards :)
Hello, I'm thinking about getting a Cutie frame to machine quilt with my Juki, especially now while its on sale. I really think it will be easier to machine quilt on it with the hoop system. I know you only did the one large quilt before getting the Qnique. What do you think?
I absolutely love the cutie frame and even though I upgraded to the Qnique19 I have quilted at least 40 quilts on it in a about a year and a half. Quilts ranging from baby to King. It is a great place to start and I found that it was so much easier to quilt, much easier on my shoulders. You will have some limitations. Challenge yourself to work with them. In the end, it is your decision and you will make it just for you!
I have learned so much from your videos!! Awesome tips!I bought the cutie frame, laser and speed control for my Juki. Now I want the sure stitch!! I believe you said you had a sure stitch for your Juki, was wondering if you still have it and would want to sell it?
My husband just gave me my Cutie Frame, so I am very new. I would like to see more videos and how to set them up. Also, if you have any videos from other quilters with the same frame I can see, I would appreciate it. Best wishes and be safe.
Congratulations, you will love it. I would highly recommend doing a search within TH-cam for other quilters. My channel was started when I was having a hard time finding information. It is about my experiences with quilting and quilting on the cutie frame. There is all sorts of information out there - Grace Company has a lot of information now too!
I am really enjoying your videos. You sure are progressing rapidly! That is such a cute quilt. I think I am going to get some fat cording from Home Depot and make some leaders while waiting for my frame to come.
Your quilt is so cute . I just bought a cutie frame and have not used it yet . Your video has helped me so much on how to use it . I have a question ,what kind of spray based do you use so it don’t gum up the needle I use June tailor spray bast and it gums up the needle so bad .I hate using pins . After watching you ,I’m excited to get started .
Thank you so much! I have used both, I prefer 505 (it doesn’t smell as strong). The big key to using spray baste, after you have sprayed basted everything, let it sit over night (at least 4 hours) before you start quilting it. I didn’t really have a problem after that. Good luck and have fun!
Why not start quilting in the center block at the top of the quilt? I wouldn't have bothered to move the whole quilt, since it will need to be moved around several times anyway? Just curious. Thanks for sharing. I've learned a few good tips...:)
Thank you for watching. A big part of starting in the center (for me) is being able to keep my backing smooth so it doesn’t shift. It has happened to me before. If you start at the top, the middle or the bottom, you’re still going to have to move your quilt. Honestly, when I started quilting on the Cutie frame, there were very few videos and not a whole lot of info on how to go about using the frame. I don’t really think there is a right way or a wrong way, just whatever way works best for each individual.
@@FogDogStudios I totally understand re: keeping backing smooth for quilting. I've found if I quilt right across the top first to secure the quilt initially, really helps. Then, if I concentrate on the center part nearest the top section - everything (all 3 layers) WILL usually stay in place. Just a suggestion. Everyone has their own methods...
I started out the way you suggested and found that if I start in the center of a quilt that is completely custom by block and not an all over pattern, I would get better results. I spray baste my quilts for the Cutie frame and for me it just worked. Now, when I load on my long arm with a 12' table, that is where I start at the top basting top and sides as I go. There is no right or wrong way if it works for you.
As I mentioned on your other video, I just stumbled upon your channel today. I think you shd work for the Grace Co. I have watched many, many of their videos and none of them are anywhere near as good as yours. Their camera person is so far away, you can’t see anything important. You don’t even seem to have a camera person (besides yourself). It just seems stationary. But I learned more abt the cutie frame in this one video than all of theirs combined! It was very enjoyable to watch. Also, you’re very clear in showing what you do/how you do it. I felt like I was standing right next to you, in the same room! Great job and keep up the good work!!! 🌷
You are very kind for saying that! I try to pass on the things that I have looked for and although you don’t see my face all that often, I try to show how it looks and almost feels… Thank you so very much for watching, subscribing, and cheering me on! I should have another video up pretty soon!
Love the video. I ordered the cutie frame in the beginning of May. It still has not arrived and I’m getting super anxious. I will be using my domestic machine for now due to my husband doesn’t want me to invest in a long arm in case I decide not to use it. I have rented a long arm and I loved it and I want to get one. I’m also thinking about getting the qnique 19. Thanks for making this video it helps me learn how to use the frame for when mine gets here.
I was told July as well. I ordered from grace frames an the latest news I heard was they were loading all the frames in a cargo and will be sending to America within a couple of weeks. It is so hard to wait.
I am so sorry for not getting back to you sooner. It took me a while to find it. It is a Leah Day ruler. I just don’t have the space for a large frame but want to get into free motion quilting. Debating over the cutie but my domestic only has a 9 inch throat which seems so limiting. If I got a long arm then I am afraid the limit of the cutie will bug me. Going to watch the rest of your videos hopefully it will help me decide. Thanks.
I completely understand. My whole journey started the exact same way. Originally I purchased the Cutie frame to work with my Juki TL2010Q. I quilted one quilt with it before I upgraded to the Qnique 19. I do not have the space for a long arm frame. Honestly, I really like working on the smaller frame. I love FMQ. Designing and quilting. This setup gives me the freedom to FMQ in a much smaller space. I hope my videos will help you decide! 😊
I have a machine with 11” throat space. I’m thinking with an 80” quilt rolled up to start in the centre, I’d be lucky to have 5-6” to quilt in. Would you agree? If so, is it worth the investment; especially since I quilt with rulers. Thanks.
I had originally planned on using my Juki TL2010Q with the Cutie frame. No matter what your throat space is you will loose at least 2 to 3 inches before even setting up a quilt. This is due to the front and back rails. I quilted one quilt with my domestic on the frame before I upgraded to the Qnique19 which has 19" of throat space with a quiltable space of about 16". I usually figure I will lose about 3". That would leave you with around 8" of quiltable space. I know this is not the answer you are looking for, but you are the only one who can determine whether or not it is worth the investment. I have made at least 40 quilts in the past 1 1/2 years using the frame and the 19 and love it.
It will work with some domestic sewing machines. I highly recommend you check out Grace Frame Company and see which machines are compatible. I think it is based on s the size of the machine. I upgraded to the Qnique19 about a month after I set up my Cutie frame. Here is the link to the cutie frame page for more information www.graceframe.com/en/machine-frames/cutie-tabletop-fabric-frame
Thanks for the video. What are the dimensions of the table that the Cutie lays on? What amount of clearing space is needed before the machine hits the wall.? Thanks DR
The Machine will never hit the wall on the ends as it has about a 3" on both ends area where the carriage stops against the frame. But, the machine will extend about 12" past the back rail so you will want to keep it at least 18 to 24" off the back wall. I have mine set up so that it is like a peninsula so I can access the back as easily as the front. My table space is 60' across by 30" deep. I like the extra space on each side of my frame.
I love your videos! I finally got my Q’nique 19 😁 I will be unboxing it next weekend. I have watched your unboxing video several times and I downloaded the manual. I can’t wait to get to quilting!! I was wondering what mode do you quilt in?
Thank you and Congratulations!!!! You are going to love it!!! Just take your time setting it up. It’s a heavy bugger too! Most of the time I am in Regulated Precise. I set my stitch length between 10 -14. Personal preference!
