  • Here I am teaching a lesson on the phrase "I like _____". The important thing to notice is that I'm taking this phrase and repeating substitutions (different nouns .e.g. shoes, haircut, different subject e.g. I, he, she) and transformations (e.g. questions and statements, noun phrases instead of simple nouns, etc.).

    Hi John! Very nice class. I can see you are using the audio-lingual approach, which in my opinion is one of the most effective ones, especially for beginners.
    I'm facing a big challenge now. All the beginners I taught in the past were Portuguese native speakers, as I am, so I could refer to L1 to introduce vocab and instructions, now I'm in the UK and I am finding it very difficult to teach real beginners. You have to mimic a lot, resort to loads of visual aids.

    My only worry is that is seems a little unfair/unethical to ask a group of students who are non native English speakers “can I record” them in English …

    Those poor ladys are doing this out of love for their grandchildren.They want to be able to communicate with them because the kids live in the west, go to English schools and don't want to speak their original language any more.

    John, outstanding job! I love how you display that sincere interest while expecting an answer from your students. It serves as an excellent imitation of a real-life conversation! Also, TTT is really low, great!

    Before you got them to stand up, had you clarified the meaning of 'like'? How did you do it?

    • @JohnBartik
      @JohnBartik  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don’t remember if I did, but I highly doubt it. In any case I’d just point to something and give it a thumbs up... 👍🏻
      Then in a monolingual class like this, clarifications between students at key moments spread quickly between them.

    Yesterday was my first session as an English teacher. I was given a class and told to practice communication with them. Their level was below A1. So I thought there is no way to start with dialogues first, since their vocabulary baggage empty. I had this idea, until I saw your video.
    Very inspiring,
