Why you keep dropping your false set.

  • A quick explanation of how to use a false set and why it's not always best to get it back after dropping a pin.
    Side note: Please forgive my grip on the pick. The camera lens was 7cm from the lock, and that was the only way I could keep from bumping the tripod.

    Thank you. I kept dropping the false set in my 90-A Pro, and any counter rotation would drop 2-3 pins, making it impossible to proceed further. After watching this video, I was able to determine the correct binding order and get an open.

    Great video mate. I’ve been getting really confused with a lock that had spools where I’d keep losing my false set all the time. This helped clarify things a lot!

    This is a really good video for so many reasons, but most of all, it has lessons that generally aren't taught by the broader locksport community. Not just explicit ones, like "why you keep dropping your false set", but also, how to be an analytic picker and how the binding order isn't always as it seems.
    Thank you very much!

      I understand the temptation (I'm guilty myself), but picking locks that you actually use is not a good idea. Picking causes wear that you don't get from normal use, and it's not unheard of for them to just stop working.
      Buying old locks for practice is cheaper and less embarrassing than calling a locksmith to fix your front door.

    I'm working on a disk storage lock (circular kind with shackle that runs inside the circumference) and can't seem to get a set of any kind, false or otherwise. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong; I've tried high and low tension, raking, and IPP with a variety of hooks. No discernible feedback that I hear/feel besides a few clicks here and there that make me think there might be multiple serrated pins.

  • @richardneel6953
    @richardneel6953 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I understand in concept but don't at all understand how you knew pin 3 was first since pin 1 felt like the first binder and we assume that we didn't know what any of the spools are. I just can't seem to figure out spools. Even watching on a cutaway lock, I can't get the lock picked.

    • @bleh222234
      @bleh222234  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Binding order is something that you discover as you pick the lock, so I wouldn't automatically start out by thinking to pick pin 3 first. It takes lots of practice, but the thing to do is to interpret what the lock tells you to build up your metal image.
      If you set a binding pin and that consistently causes another pin to drop, then you know that the one that dropped wasn't supposed to be set yet. Similarly, that means that the pin that caused the drop was supposed to be set sooner.
      So taking the lock in this video as an example, I might get annoyed by all of the dropping and try to set the first spool that gives clear counter rotation (#3) before actually touching the standard. If the standard keeps dropping, then I'd try to set the second spool immediately after pin 3 and so on.

      This is one that I made myself, but some people do list them for sale on ebay. If you don't have tools, then that's probably your best bet, but you should realize that you're paying $20-$30 for something that you can make yourself with a $2 lock and about an hour of time invested.
      I used a hacksaw to get it started, a dremel with grinding wheel to remove more material, and then some jeweler's files for the final touches.

      There is one thing I did that 0pamp didn't in that video, though. I popped off the bible cap and inserted a piece of 3mm brass rod down through the bible and into the core. That immobilized the whole thing while I worked. I moved the rod back and forth between chambers 1 and 5 as needed throughout the process.
