Ok, the reason why Mettaton remembers what he is fighting for when you used the mystery key is actually pretty interesting. I don’t know everything but I will share what I know. If you go to Napstablook’s ‘pathetic’ house, there will be a locked house beside his house every run in plain sight. But, if you buy the mystery key from Catty and Bratty, you will be able to unlock that house. It contains 6 diaries and some other furniture. You can’t interact with the furniture but only the diaries. Here are the diary entries 1. Dear Diary: Shyren's sister "fell down" recently. It's sad. Without her sister to speak for her... she's become more reclusive than ever. So I reached out to her, and told her... that she, Blooky, and I should all perform together sometime. She seemed to like that idea. 2. Dearer Diary: I like to buy a new diary for every entry I make. I love to collect diaries. 3. Dearest Diary: Our cousin left the farm to become a training dummy. That leaves just Blooky and I. Blooky asked me if I was going to try to become corporeal, too. They sounded so... resigned... come on, Blooky. You know I'd never leave you behind. And besides... (7:08) Another thing is that Flowey even says that he *tried* to be nice for multiple resets, then slowly started to descend into madness. It *wasn't* fully Asriel because boi was genuinely going insane from going through the same story time and time again; the player could just go play a different game when they got bored. Flowey didn't have that luxury. And because he didn't have access to 7 human souls until the player came along, he couldn't get a true happy ending. He very likely could've been well and truly insane before he started murdering people.
