The first day in Laos turned out to be a disaster, tried to get money from the ATM and it didn't give the money but deducted a lot of money from the bank account and they are still yet to refund it.! Apparently, this is quite a common thing that happens in Laos. After a stressful start to the day went on a nice roadtrip and found a hidden gem in Laos

If you're in a foreign country, that's a big risk to take with Atms. Sometimes, they won't even spit out a receipt, so always go inside if it's possible. Those Atms rips people off. I feel your pain, Tom.
atms dont rip people off, thats fake news, i can tell you that in the philippines some ATMs locked my card out while others didnt.

Hopefully you can get the banking sorted out soon. Seems like the machine was out of money and deducted the funds but didn't release the cash. Most Banks should be able to sort that out inside.

Hello Tom. Don't worry the money will automatically arrive back in to your bank Account but it could be up to 2 weeks. Even if that happened in Europe it works the same. if your with a bank from Ireland. Just inform them what happened anyhow. It happened to me in spain the atm not dispense the money. Took about 2 weeks to get in back.

Looks a bit like Nong Khai where I spent some time. Mind you it is only across the river. The bank situation sucks but it isn't confined to less developed countries. I was in Seoul a couple of months ago on the way to Bali and ate at a pretty high-end restaurant near the airport and had quite a nice meal with far too many drinkies. When I got up the next day, I checked the damage on my Korean banking app only to discover that they had swiped my card twice within 30 seconds. I rang the bank, but they could do nothing but fortunately my flight wasn't for a few hours so could return to the restaurant at lunchtime. The manager was very apologetic and refunded my card there and then. Made me wonder how many times this happens to people who don't have the time and need to catch a flight.

Good to know for others visiting, go to a bank do not use ATM's! Did you find fuel? Food looked okay, is it cheap....you forgot to say what it cost! It looks pretty at night, maybe take a torch next time for safety walk! Lol.
Lord Tom, you had your money grossly mishandled by a bank, then purchased a motor bike and pulled up at a gas station that didn't even have gas🙄🤦♂️ Yet you still kept going, found a nice place to drink and eat on the side of the road (you have an uncanny ability to find a good place to eat and drink no matter where you're at in the world), undeterred, and still determined to make the most of the trip, on your terms. A Thai here. First of all, sorry about the headache and the hassle. I was in Laos maybe 20 years ago and I was able to use the Thai Baht with ease. Things were quoted in Kip, along with the US Dollar and the Thai Baht. Very convenient. But it seems from your experience that what I experienced is no longer the case?!?
You can still pay in Thai Baht in Laos .
Tom there is scam with ATMs at the moment and it involves ATMs with the tap n go symbol.Not sure if you have seen that scam.

You can use baht in Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia, and in some places in Vietnam.
The part you eat is on that raft. It is called Moo Kratha, originated in Thailand and spread to Laos, Cambodia.
