You mentioned it’s all subjective, but calling Hallelujah Time one of their worst songs is a bit tough. The tune is very different from the most popular ones but still one of my favourites. The way Bunny Wailer’s lead vocals work together with the harmonies is wonderful. Also those lyrics are very touching as they reach out to people who have seen hard times. It’s a goose bumps type of tune for me and l am not even religious.. 😂
    Hear the children crying
But I know they cry not in vain
    Now the times are changing
Love has come to bloom again
Smelling the air when spring comes by raindrops
    Reminds us of youthful days
But now it's not rain that water the cane crops
But the sweat from man's brow
    The substance from our spine
We got to keep on living, living on borrowed time
    Hallelujah time
Yes, you can hear the children singing
    Hallelujah time
As they go singing by and by
    Hallelujah time
Ooh, hallelujah singing in the morning
    Hallelujah time
Let them sing, don't let them cry
    Over rocks and mountains
The sheep are scattered all around
    Over hills and valleys
They are everywhere to be found
But though we bear our burdens now
All afflictions got to end somehow
From swinging the hammer, pulling the plough
Why won't you let us be, to live in harmony
We like to be free like birds in a tree
    Hallelujah time
Yes, you can hear the children singing
    Hallelujah time
As they go singing by and by
    Hallelujah time
Ooh, hallelujah singing in the morning
    Hallelujah time
Let them sing, don't let them cry
    Hallelujah time
Ooh, hallelujah singing in the morning
    Hallelujah time
Ooh, hallelujah singing by and by

Bob Marley, along with John Lennon, holds a unique place in my heart as a transcendently inspired and fearless, gut-wrenchingly honest singer-songwriter--AND I must admit don't own or know a lot of these albums you are ranking (!)--but one of the few I do have, Exodus, I've always felt is an absolutely perfect album from front to back. Love your thoughts and, as always, your unique way of presenting them--thank you, Dennis!

A lot of people think “I Know” (confrontation album) was Bob Marley‘s worst, or rather, Bob Marley‘s only bad song. But I find the melody and lyrics really inspiring. I guess people just don’t like that the instrumental arrangement sounds very pop. The only Marley song that I don’t like is “Cry to Me” (Rastaman Vibration). And i think “Wake Up and Live” (Survival) is rather flat although it’s still good enough to listen to. I think choosing a best album for him is almost impossible. They’re all so good. By the way, do you like Steel Pulse? I’d love to hear your take on them.

    • @rocdocs
      @rocdocs  ปีที่แล้ว

I do like Steel Pulse, though I should delve more into their records. Garvey's Ghost is the only one I have so far.

    • @echo-trip-1
      @echo-trip-1 ปีที่แล้ว

@@rocdocs - Garvey’s Ghost is Burning Spear. The most highly regarded Steel Pulse albums are Handsworth Revolution, True Democracy, and Earth Crisis. But Tribute to the Martyrs, Caught You, and Babylon the Bandit are also good. After that they pretty much nosedived, faceplanted. I mean, they really sucked. But there was an eventual comeback of sorts, especially with the African Holocaust album.

You put out good content, thank you. It’s so difficult for me to rank songs or albums but if forced my list would not differ a whole lot from yours. Some of my favorite Marley albums don’t meet the criteria for your list as they were not Island releases. The albums produced by Lee “Scratch” Perry, I believe they are the Wailers 2nd and 3rd studio albums. Soul Rebels and Soul Revolution Part II (aka Soul Revolution) are in my opinion some of the Wailers’ best projects. Most of the songs appear again on later releases but these versions have a haunting sound that sets them apart from the rest. Also, the companion to these, Soul Revolution Part II Dub which has the vocals removed from the songs.

Sadly, midnight ravers does seem to be about Bob's reflections in response to people's clothes and behaviors at late night clubs in England. I meean, the rastafarians were particullarly homophobic, I doubt Bob had a different view considering the context he grew up in. I also got the same impression that it could be transphobic, which throws me off since I really adore the song, it's one of my favorite songs ever in fact. However, my worldview is polar opposite to it. Oh well, no one's perfect.

You can check the original I Know without overdubs if you search Many Times I Sit And Wonder. It's another perspective and sounds way better than the official release. At 4:26 you pointed an arrow at Johnny Nash, not Don Taylor.
You also mentioned that Peter Tosh left the band at 9:43, but he wasn't the only one, as Bunny Wailer left as well. This means the original Wailers disbanded, and the songs in the albums became more homogeneous, as Bob Marley was almost always the writer of the songs. Bunny and Peter were great artists, and they had different styles of writing, demonstrated in their solo careers.

Nice job, Dennis. I would have put Natty Dread as number 1 and definitely moved Catch a Fire up the list. I’m a sucker for that Wayne Perkins American guitar finding a way to fit in with the Jamaican soul.

Everybody has their own particular preferences but Burnin IMO is the Wailers best album.
I applaud the originality of your list considering Catch A Fire wasn't automatically ranked top 3, but honestly it should have been ranked ahead of Kaya, and Uprising.
Exodus was definitely his pop classic of an album but Burnin was the original wailers at their peak musically and Natty Dread was the best Bob Marley album to follow Tosh and Bunny's departure.
I Shot The Sheriff, Put It On, and Rasta Man Chant are unrivaled amongst the rest of their works besides Concrete Jungle.

This is a very nice video although i not entirely agree with your ranking. Survival should definately be in the top 5 and not lowest. My favorite however is Catch a Fire.. i own all the islands studio albums for 25 years and the last 10 years this has become my favorite. If you are used to Legend like hit potential songs, i understand this album can seem slowly but this album has a certain rawness that really shines trough in all most all the songs especially the opener Concrete Jungle.
