Great question! Carbon is used to remove impurities in water. In tanks with plants, most of those impurities are food for the plants. I want the plants to use it. Also carbon can be used to absorb medicines and clear up water that has tannins in it.

Throughout my entire life (which is not that short anymore : ( ) I must have had a dozen Aqua Clears on my multiple tanks. It's always been my favorite but I do have to admit that living in South Florida between the hurricanes and thunderstorms, the power outages are frequent and when you get home and find dry media especially bio media and a dry whirling impeller it's been tempting lately to buy a submerged impeller like the SeaChem Tidal since it will prime itself once the power is back on. You can also place your own media like the AquaClear and on top of that you can take an interior basket out of the filter that has sides and the reversible top of the filter doubles as a bottom for when you remove the basket you won't have water all over the place. I just bought one and hope it will be as great as reviews say it is.
I find if you keep the impeller clean and maybe lube it, it should start after a power outage. Another trick, is add a sponge filter for a place for extra BB to live so if the AC does not start and the media gets dry, there is still BB in the tank.
I just love how much fun you have. Thanks for the great video. I'm currently trying to get my AquaClear (now re-named something else by Fluval) to work better. I appreciate the help.

some filters have the floss sock with a plastic frame inside. with the aquaclear it is just the foam block. so when I bought a replacement foam, I didn't need all the plastic... less plastic is good, also the foam filter lasts years longer than the floss sock kind... with aquaclear, I would suggest people think twice about getting a much larger filter. like you mention the 50 gallon, is for 20-50 gallon. but when I used a larger filter for the tank, I had to turn the flow way down. it can make the filter a bit louder, sometimes if makes the lid start to vibrate... also when the flow is turned down, it could make the motor and impeller work harder and wear out sooner? seems always better to match to the proper sizes
I didn’t know I could replace the impeller! Sweeeet..... I have this filter and only concern is wanting to make it quieter by....replacing impeller.... I don’t know it it will work but that’s the hope.

i got this filter for my turtle's 55 gallon tank. made a big difference in water quality. always keep it on full flow. I put a layer of polyfill on top of the sponge and below the charcoal filter and ceramic filter. best NOT to rinse the filter in the sink. it needs the bacteria to eat the bad stuff in the water, so just rinse the filter components in a bucket of the water you siphon off when cleaning the tank as well as you can. When I was having trouble with mine, I wanted to call for tech support, but the phone number was only good in Canada and UK and their website advertised in the directions was not even working. Figured out my problem was just that the impeller wasn't seated. The impeller is not like cheaper filters that are just turned by a motor. The impeller actually has a magnet in it that turns when the filter is turned on. So basically the motor will not even run without the impeller in it. Still working fine after 3 months. Good filter especially for dirty turtles!
@@MichaelsFishRoom it is a red-eared slider. I've also made a "vacuum cleaner" out of a submersible powerhead with a plastic coke bottle cut off and polyfill in it attached to the intake. I can move it around the bottom to pick up debris. it hangs on the side and runs constantly keeping the water really clear too.
@@MichaelsFishRoom sorry i just saw your question. the cut off coke bottle goes on the inlet end of the submersible powerhead. i had to duct tape mine on cuz it wasn't a snug fit. then i put about 1/3 of the bottle full of polyfiber like what you'd use to make a pillow. the fiber catches debris.
I had a aqua clear 50 that worked great for like 7 years lol , I personally prefer penguin 350s for a hang on the back filter . I use two 350s and a fulval 406 on a 75, it stays so clean I barely do anything but water changes every couple weeks
Hey Michael! Random question, hopefully you can help! When online-ordered fish are received by the buyer - what is the proper method of prepping and transferring the fish to a new home environment? Does one rest the bag and allow it to temperature-match, or maybe drip acclimate? Or is it the old-school dump the bag into a net over a bucket and transfer directly to a tank sort of deal?
I love Aquaclears, wouldn't have any other kind of HOB filter. My only problem with them is that the lids can get an annoying rattle, and sometimes there's a problem with the motor refusing to restart.
Granted, the priming issue does exist, but still prefer them. My AC 30 run dry for around 22 hours. When I discovered it, the motor was HOT!!! No surprise! But, I let cool, rinsed the media in dechlorinated water and the monitored the water parameters and all was fine. BUT, these were healthy fish, in an established tank. This is part of the reason why I choose to run unsightly sponge filters in all my tanks, scaped or otherwise. Well placed hardscape or plants can hide them reasonably well.
For over 20 years of fish keeping, when it comes to HOB, I’ve owned Aqua-Clear, Marineland, Fluval C, Seachem Tidal and by far Seachem Tidal ranks 1 in my opinion.
@@MichaelsFishRoom the 20 has red and blue shrimp with n class orchid endlers the 29 has your common stuff tiger / golden barbs /some tetras /corys and a lot of plants in each.
Sponges are excellent biomedia. It’s the whole point behind sponge filters and matten filters. Sponges are actually better than more commercially marketed biomedia.
Can you send me a link for the bio media or lava rock I am setting up a 44 gallon tank getting rid of my 20 gallon tank with a Marie land filter. Great video I am now a subscriber
The problem I had with hang on the back filters is that if you go away on vacation the filter gets clogged you will have a flood in that room on the floor. Never occured with the Bubble Up Corner filters.
I bought a tank package came with a cheap crappy HOB filter that barely was acceptable for the tank. Bought a fluval C3 and now run both wondering if the aquaclear is that much better id be better off using a C3 and an aqua clear or just get 2 C3's because the difference isnt that much more significant and it'd be better to have 2 filters that use the media replacements rather then get 2 filters that use different parts for not much more of a benefit.
I think there are great filter I have AquaClear 50 on my 36 and I run a 206 Fluval canister filter the two together does a great job Happy Fish happy wife happy life great video👍
Sorry this is so funny. Had the same filter years ago. Hang on the backs are okay, but don't at all beat sumps or canisters even. I feel in my opinion sponge filters are better than hang on the backs. HOB's never cut it for me and always had to use them in conjunction with sponge or forgot them altogether and just used sponge. But for planted tanks with substrate, canisters with a sponge prefilter or how I created my sump set ups, with overflows with stainless steel mesh which is baby shrimp and fry proof is the best. One six foot sump with two 40cm square refugium tanks and 4 bigger tanks above is the best I have ever had and made it all myself. Rack, tanks and sump all made by me from scratch.
I just wanna say, I appreciated the “U-Tube” joke. Please never change man.

Got this filter for my 20 gallon tank but it makes to much noise. Anything I can do to stop it? My wife makes me turn it off so she can sleep
What is making noise?
Tape down the lid if it’s rattling, you can write the date on it then too
I had a aqua clear 50 that worked great for like 7 years lol , I personally prefer penguin 350s for a hang on the back filter . I use two 350s and a fulval 406 on a 75, it stays so clean I barely do anything but water changes every couple weeks
Nice.
Thanks!
Plop and drop! I have many a video on it.
Where is a good place to get Lava Rock? Home Depot?
Yup
LOVE this! Awesome information and I love HOB filters!
Thanks!
I have a tank set up 4" from wall wondering if the aqua clear hang on the back would fit between there. Running a sponge filter currently.
If I remember I’ll measure. But I bet you can find that info if you google it
Is that good enough to clean a 10 gallon water tank with 1 small and 1 big gold fish
Depends on how much water you change.
Im planning to buy hob filter...can it remove all fish poop?
Every last bit!
I love Aquaclears, wouldn't have any other kind of HOB filter. My only problem with them is that the lids can get an annoying rattle, and sometimes there's a problem with the motor refusing to restart.
Yeah there have been many discussions here about the restart. Lol
will this filter be used on 30gallon tank ?
You can.
Hi Michael, how much clearance do I need between wall and back of Tank? Thanks Tim
Depends on if you are putting something back there? Is it an outside wall? Does it get cold?
How can you run any hob without an intake sponge? (and I'm not even thinking about fry).
Easy, just put it in the tank and plug it in. Boom!
Good vid bud , aqua clear are the best for sure
I concur!
Sponges are great and hiding them helps.
Yeah man, these are the best filters. I absolutely love them. Great video!
Thanks!
Try the Seachem Tidal HOB's and you will change that statement
Aquaclear VS Tidal What is the best Hang on back filter? th-cam.com/video/Uou6BKWMP_M/w-d-xo.html
For over 20 years of fish keeping, when it comes to HOB, I’ve owned Aqua-Clear, Marineland, Fluval C, Seachem Tidal and by far Seachem Tidal ranks 1 in my opinion.
Cool
i have one on a 20 and 29 (50s) great filters got mine at kensfish i have a slip on sponge on the intake in my shrimp tank
Nice! What’s in the tanks?
@@MichaelsFishRoom the 20 has red and blue shrimp with n class orchid endlers the 29 has your common stuff tiger / golden barbs /some tetras /corys and a lot of plants in each.
Nice!
Why don't you like carbon in your filter? Also, why did you put the poly-fil ahead of the sponge in your filter?
No need for carbon, in addition if left in too long can become toxic.
Because I made a mistake!😉
Sponges are excellent biomedia. It’s the whole point behind sponge filters and matten filters. Sponges are actually better than more commercially marketed biomedia.
Not sure they are better than all, but maybe some.
I vote for the seachem tidal.. i love it
You don’t think it is noisy?
why does no one use the carbon? what does it do? thanks
It can help remove meds and some say polish water.
OK I’m confused you said sponge sponge sponge then bio media then sponge sponge sponge so how much can hold ?
Lots of sponges 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 you want the water to hit the sponges first for mechanical filtration, then bio media.
Custom media, will try
All the best
Hi Fishie Mike. I think I will get that filter after watching your video.
click the link, click the link!
@@MichaelsFishRoom I clicked the link for a 30 and a 50.
StrangeArrangements omg! I’ll be rich! Thanks!
@@MichaelsFishRoom Don't spend it all in one place. :)
StrangeArrangements ok, I’ll try🤣🤣🤣
Great video, I’m sold on it . Thanks 👍🏻and subscribed
Thanks Martin and Welcome!

The problem I had with hang on the back filters is that if you go away on vacation the filter gets clogged you will have a flood in that room on the floor. Never occured with the Bubble Up Corner filters.
Yeah, that can happen.
There are good filters- the 20 was the mini the 200 is the 50 but the original where the best had them for long time.
Yeah!
Do I have to recycle my tank if I change to this filter? If so how do I do this while keeping my fish in my tank?
What filter do you have now?
I have the tetra whisper 10i internal power filter in a 10 gallon tank. I’m a total beginner... your vids have been very helpful btw!
lmao I love this video and I comment at 2:20 already. im gonna leave thumbs up
Thanks! Did you smash the sub button?
I bought a tank package came with a cheap crappy HOB filter that barely was acceptable for the tank. Bought a fluval C3 and now run both wondering if the aquaclear is that much better id be better off using a C3 and an aqua clear or just get 2 C3's because the difference isnt that much more significant and it'd be better to have 2 filters that use the media replacements rather then get 2 filters that use different parts for not much more of a benefit.
The replacement parts is a good point. I have never used a C3, but hear it is a copy of the AC.
Which size for a 10 gallon
What will you keep in it?
My bedroom
I think there are great filter I have AquaClear 50 on my 36 and I run a 206 Fluval canister filter the two together does a great job Happy Fish happy wife happy life great video👍
Thanks for watching!
Great Video Mike!!!!
Thanks brother!
Nice. I don’t use HObs for the most part other than to help in addition to sponge filters.
This guy is so funny I like him I guess I’ll subscribe
This guy appreciates it.
