The final ball from Scotland was often poor, the finishing weak and woeful. Uruguay’s defence was robust at all times, and plain violent at others. Part of the problem is that Scotland lacked creativity and passing ability coming from the back, compounded by the fact that Aitken in midfield was also defensively minded. As a result, Scotland were unable to make the extra man count, and had men to spare at the back who were surplus to requirements. Instead of being a man up, they looked a man down at times. Note, also, the number of occasions in which Uruguay, despite being a man down, managed to find a free man in the box. Scotland were lucky not to concede on these occasions. They also seemed somewhat intimidated, which is hardly surprising given some of the challenges. I’d seen all 21 Liverpool home games this season, and 16 out of 21 Everton home games. I’d never seen Nicol and Sharp looking so tentative. The match left a sour taste in the mouth. I was glad to see the back of Uruguay, as talented as some of their players were. But Scotland were inept in key areas here.
