I have a 20 year old golden yellow linen dress in a casual flared style, centre front and back seams, flat-fell seam finishes, self-bias binding neckline and armholes, 2 inch faced hem that has been washed and air dried at least 100 times. It still looks lovely and flattering. I always use laundry treatments for hard water so as to prevent that grungy look. If you have soft water, linen would last forever.
I definitely appreciate all the work you put into editing. You must work for hours finding all of those clips to insert. So helpful. I was able to buy up the last of the 55 linen/ 45 rayon at my local Joanns and am happy that you included prewashing instructions. I will was 2-3 times this time just for good measure. Thank you.
I love sewing with and wearing linen. I have made several garments in various weights. And a linen rayon blend. I love them all. I am enjoying your series, learning new things about linen.
Great video with so many useful tips and information. Loved seeing you model your makes. Linen is one of my favorite fabrics to work with. It may be more expensive but agree it's well worth it. I like seeing a nice wrinkled linen but will try multiple washings next time. Going to make a pair of linen pants so I'll keep the grow factor in mind. Thank you.
This is just perfect Karina. I am about to start sewing my first pair of linen pants. I finished the muslin today and am happy with the alterations I made with your help in the videos about pants fitting. Thanks for everything you do
Very good & informative. I love linen blends. Like you said they are really great for beginners. I can’t wait for the next linen video. Thank you for all you do to help us with our projects.
Just had to add I so agree that it’s so easy and joyful to sew, very forgiving, and I cannot agree more-the simplest make looks luxurious and high end just based in this fabric choice!💕
I thank you so much, I have become totally besotted with linen. I scrounge all the thrift stores and bring home men’s shirts and TRY and make tops with them, I love this fabric. I admit to being a polyester snob…. Sorry, I just love how this fabric breathes! Had no idea that Canada produced this fabric! Thank you so much for all your information, I am 65 and am TRYING TO SEW, my biggest challenge is that my aging shape has made me modify my patterns so much, which I am not good at. I stay with the loose box type tops which I find so comfortable but will continue to watch you and might just might try a skirt - :). Georgie in B.c. Canada.
I really enjoyed learning about the flax plant and how it is made into fabric. Now I understand why the fabric is so expensive. I’m making my first linen garment and followed the instructions on the bolt that said to wash in cool water, dry on low, and use a cool iron. Well, a cool iron has no effect at all on smoothing out the wrinkles, so I used a little steam, which helped a bit. I wish I had seen this video before pretreating, but now I feel more confident about ironing with steam and a pressing cloth. I washed only once and have cut out my pieces, so I hope it won’t shrink much more! Thank you for this excellent video!
Wow, great content Karina. I so appreciate all that you do for all of us who watch your channel. I too love working with linen. I only wish I could find those gorgeous vibrant prints you have. Also, thank you for showing us how linen is processed. That was very interesting.
Thanks you so very much. I have a lot of linen Which I purchased, on sale, over the past year. I have made 1 top, which I love. But with these tips I feel confident I can make more pieces which will last. I will use patterns that I have made before, I believe you have said make a pattern a few times. This has been the best advice because I get better with each make; I don’t have to make a muslin each time and it is so cost effective. Thanks again and am looking forward to upcoming videos on linen. . So thanks againn.
I was so excited to see a new video! This last weekend I watched ALL your videos! I am up to date. Thank you for everything you do. You are so enjoyable and I have learned so much from your videos. With all that has gone on I am glad to have a TH-cam friend that I watch while sewing and learning.
This was a fascinating video! I love linen and linen blends! Love sewing with it and wearing it! Love the natural color and the way it takes die. I generally use linen blend with either cotton or rayon. The cost is less and I like the drape better-also a bit less wrinkled than pure linen! This video was so informative! Often people question the cost of linen -this video gives the reason why! Such a process involved in turning the plant into a useable textile! Thank you for always providing so many interesting, broad based, and informative videos. It’s always interesting to learn from another pro sewist and share ideas! I especially appreciate this information-as I own and operate a private sewing studio -whereby I teach the art of all things fiber and stitch! It’s nice to be able to educate and inspire my students -and will pass the information on!💕🧵✂️
Thank you so much Karina! This has been so helpful and encouraging. My adult son has requested I make him four linen shirts. I have purchased and washed eight yards of pure linen but I have not worked with linen before. Your video was extremely interesting and I learned a great deal. Looking forward to the next one and am now encouraged to make myself something with 100% linen. I have a favorite dress that I made with a linen blend but all linen is a different experience. Thank you again for your passion for imparting sewing/fabric knowledge! Happy sewing!😃😃
Your son's shirts will be amazing and they will last a very long time. Main thing, wash several times, it makes all the difference. Sewing the collar will be a treat... super crisp. I'd use light weight fusible cotton interfacing for the collar and stand.
Brilliant introduction to linen Karina. I love linen and have used it for many years, I am looking forward to the rest of the series. Thank you. Jacqui from NZ.
You are sooo amazing. I love listening to you. You are probably one of only a handful of TH-camrs I don’t put in fast playback! You barely breath 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I’m just watching your flat front short construction Karina. I bought a beautifully soft white l100% linen top in charity shop after watching your video. It’s too big but I will make it fit…some how!
As another linen advocate, I was not bored by any means. I went from a love-hate-love relationship with linen. I feel frumpy most of the time so at a time I didn't want to look frumpier, I thought. I gave all my linen pieces to my daughter who loves linen to this day. I recently made a lined linen coat for her plus several tops and pants. I didn't leave myself out as I also have some basic and well-loved pieces. I look forward to more info on linen as I can always learn more. I sincerely appreciate your dedication to the art of sewing. I don't know if you have heard of Edith Head in Hollywood. She dressed the stars and has gone down in history as a star herself. I have a feeling you might have that notarity as EVERYONE seems to know your name and talents. Thank you for your dedication and a mentor to us all.
Everything you put out is high quality! I've been sewing a lot with linen this whole year just due to where I live. It's the Sonoran desert. We get less than 1 inch of rain and never freezes in the city. It's hot. And bright. And linen is perfect. I have about 8 yards left of some handkerchief 2.3 to 2.8 Oz linen for cover ups, tanks and blouses. Then some 5.3 Oz med linen in several darker colors for skirts, pants and other bottoms. It's so forgiving after being washed a couple times. Another reason to absolutely dry is all the lint that comes off the first few washes. I washed my 11 yds of handkerchief linen when I got it, serged edges, right sides together, a big tube, but I had to clean the lint trap 2 times each cycle. But it's so worth it. I read about softening linen quicker and tried the baking soda method. It didn't seem to accelerate it much, and I soaked the linen with frequent agitation as well for 72 hours. I'll stick with just washing. There's usually no short cut for awesomeness.. Lol I made a few skirts which did require some pressing but after, I'd say a dozen washes, they are now just wash and wear. Maybe a spot press on the hem to fall properly. I'm a fan of linen! I can't wait to see what else you show us. I've seen literally every video of yours and I'm excited to see a lot more linen easy to refer to. Thank you for everything you do for us Karina! Love from Arizona!
Yes, the quality and content of your video is wonderful! You included so much beautiful linen footage that I was almost drooling, lol! I'm a linen lover as well, just finished my first two linen pieces and I basically live in them now.
I watched your next series first, but any order is good. The process of turning the flax into cloth was amazing. Linen takes up most of my cabinet space. I love making garments with linen. Just splurged and going to make linen sheets. I made Closet Core Carolyn pajamas out of linen and it turned out so beautiful. And comfortable! Thanks for a great series!
Thank you. This was one of the most interesting videos I've seen in a long time. I had no idea how linen was made. I appreciate the time that went into making this helpful content.
Perfect timing….I just did a huge linen fabric haul. Different weights and not just solids. June will be linen and woven fabric month for me. Can you imagine placing the ‘threads’ on the looms and then having to watch it as it weaves the cloth?
I have had linen in my stach for about a year, didn't dare use it. I struggle to find a decent fit on any pattern. I will mock up a cotton pattern first. Thank you for giving me the desire to use this fabric. God Bless
I love the info about the production of linen. I've seen a video on the historical production (pre and post industrial revolution) and I think learning about textile production is fascinating. It makes me appreciate the value of the cloth, and encourages me to be more mindful of the environmental cost of slow fashion in addition to the more well known waste of fast fashion.
I'm fascinated with textiles and have always had a lot of respect for the process and it's worth. Hence trying to use it all up, even the little scraps.
This episode was very interesting and exceptionally well done. It is 2:25 a.m., so it is very late and I should be asleep but here I am listening to you teach about linen on my cellphone. The other crazy thing is I do not have a sewing machine and I have not sewn since I was in my early twenties, along time ago. Despite the nonsensical reason for me watching, I found it very interesting and appreciated all the information about caring for the material. I love linen, it is such a beautiful fabric, but now I better understand why it is so expensive. I really do appreciate you going through the Pros and Cons because this information will help me to make good decisions for when best to use this material. Kristina, the hours of work devoted to this episode shows and is worth your painstaking efforts to make the lesson to be enjoyable, understandable, useful and truly motivational.Thank you for working so hard to make your channel be so wonderful. It is in every say. I love the clothing you make and the effort and time you devote to creating the most beautifully designed and constructed apparel. 🙋♀️👏💖
Thank you Karina, this is so helpful. I love linen but haven't sewn with it before! Now I can't wait to make some garments for my southern hemisphere trip next February!
I thought I knew a lot about linen .. but I was SO wrong. This video was packed full of information. Thank you for all your hard work and research, you are very much appreciated.
By far linen is one of my favourite fabrics. I've used linen silk for suiting, I have used mixed with cotton. It's fab on its own. I love the wrinkles. It looks more expensive than it is even though here in UK it is expensive. I've made a gilet and Harrington jacket with irish linen by far the best in my opinion. It is more expensive ❤️
Great episode Karina! I really enjoy this nerdy content! I also appreciate all your efforts. I figured you were working on something big since we didn't hear from you on any social media for a few days. 🤩💜🖐🧵🪡👑
I have a stunning linen & silk (90:10) mix with a printed impressionist painting look on it and I’ve been struggling with finding the perfect pattern for it as I want to show off the print. I’m leaning toward a trapeze dress with a belt, probably a self fabric belt. It’s gorgeous fabric and I’d love to make it up, but I have some fear of cutting into it as it was quite expensive.
Brilliant video, Karina! I love linen, so you are definitely preaching to the converted with me! 😁 I am very excited to watch the rest of your mini series, thank you so much 🙏
I’m beginning to understand your advice to pre-wash linen 2-3 times before sewing, based on experience from some bought linen shirts for my partner. The first time washed was a nightmare to iron. After the second wash, it settled so much for a good easy iron, and even better after the third wash - they’ve become my favourite shirts for my partner to wear, they’re so beautiful, and look expensive. I’ll throw my linens in my stash back in the wash a couple more times, as they’ve only had one initial wash after buying, before adding to my fabric shelves - they’re still quite stiff.
I’ve been on a washing craze the last couple of days. I love having them ready to go for when I need them 😀. Mens linen shirts are amazing. I love them too.
Was wondering where you'd gone! Never sewn with linen before. I always think it crushes so much it ends up looking a bit like a rag, but will definitely watch your series and hope to be persuaded. Excellent content as usual Karina.
Thanks for this video. I have just bought my first linen so that I can make some walking shorts, this video was very helpful. there is a Linen field where I live and have always been a bit curious when I see it getting harvested.
I sewed my husband a camp shirt out of linen. After taking it out of the dryer I had to press it. Then after he had it on for awhile it looked like he slept in it!
This is going to be a great series! I love sewing with linen, in fact, I have a piece of red 100% linen that I am using for the Peppermint Magazine Button-Up Dress, so this series is very timely for me. The section on how linen is made was very interesting; I had no idea it was such a lengthy process! I am definitely looking forward to the rest of the series.
GREAT CONTENT Karina . Thank you so much for all this information very interesting indeed 😋. Here in Europe linen has gone up in price , so stock up before it starts to increase on yr side of the world!! Love the clothes you modeled, so pretty 😍
Thank you for this very informative video. I have just recently started to venture into sewing with linen ( mostly due to cost, special care and wrinkle factors) so was encouraged to continue with this new experience.
This was great information. I really liked seeing the process of making the linen. I made a linen top one time & did some embroidery on it. I prewashed the fabric once before making, but it shrunk the next time it was washed. So I will definitely wash a couple of times next time I use linen. Thank you Karina for sharing your knowledge, techniques and time.
Hola Karina, love your channel. Have learned tons from watching your sewing tutorials. I have a question if possible you can answer, my daughter in law will be traveling to Brazil and I would like get some fabric from Brazil. Are they very expensive? for example, rayon challis, linen??? Thank you so much for your valuable content.
Thanks so much for this series, I am finding it so helpful and interesting! I have seen several sewing experts say that if you iron your linen before you pre-wash it, it becomes less prone to wrinkling, some even describing it as becoming "wrinkle free" or "wrinkle resistant". I tried this a few times with linen from different sellers and it doesn't work for me. Yet when I ask about this, they are quite adamant! I wonder if it's some kind of special linen that has a pre-treatment or something? Have you heard of this? In any case, looking forward to the rest of the episodes.
Fantastic tips for the pre treatment. Feel more confident to buy linen for summer trousers now.
i wish i could like this video multiple times!! my favorite!

Thank you Karina! I have been so busy that I’ve had to wait to watch this miniseries. Now is the time. I can’t wait to learn from you.
Just had to add I so agree that it’s so easy and joyful to sew, very forgiving, and I cannot agree more-the simplest make looks luxurious and high end just based in this fabric choice!💕

I love linen!!! I find it to be the most luxurious outta all of the fabrics and oh linen sheets are sublime!!
Fantastic, thank you. I really enjoyed this video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent. I love linen and have learned to accept the wrinkles.
Thank you so much! This was helpful for me considering working with linen. I had no idea it was one of the more expensive fabrics.
Brilliant introduction to linen Karina. I love linen and have used it for many years, I am looking forward to the rest of the series. Thank you. Jacqui from NZ.
Glad it was helpful!
You are sooo amazing. I love listening to you. You are probably one of only a handful of TH-camrs I don’t put in fast playback! You barely breath 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Thank you so much!! I’ve trained myself mentally to not say ummm lol. I do edit pauses more than 1 second long though. I promise I am breathing.
I’m just watching your flat front short construction Karina. I bought a beautifully soft white l100% linen top in charity shop after watching your video. It’s too big but I will make it fit…some how!
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles that’s reassuring. 😆so packed with great advice. Please tell us how you press and the secret of no knots in hand sewing 💋
Brilliant tips and great information Karina. Thank you!
I really enjoyed this. I have some linen and you have given me the encouragement to sew it that I needed. Thank You!
Love love love linen!
As another linen advocate, I was not bored by any means. I went from a love-hate-love relationship with linen. I feel frumpy most of the time so at a time I didn't want to look frumpier, I thought. This was so interesting, thank you. Seeing the whole process makes you never want to waste another piece of fabric.
That's exactly it! it's so valuable.
Cloth Edit in Australia sells Linen/silk blend. I have made a dress and a shirt from it. It is beautiful! Very interesting VLOG...thank-you.
Thank you again for all your knowledge and work you have put into this video series. You are amazing.
My pleasure!
Thank you ! Many of us around me adore linen and you xxx. Blessings stay safe & healthy
Thank you so much for removing the mystery of linen. I’m anxiously looking forward to the future episodes.
Everything you put out is high quality! I've been sewing a lot with linen this whole year just due to where I live. It's the Sonoran desert. We get less than 1 inch of rain and never freezes in the city. It's hot. And bright. And linen is perfect. I've even hyped myself up too lol.
I love to sew with linen, it’s a great summer fabric, and I love the relaxed wrinkles of linen!
So interesting. I can only imagine what a dreamy hand a silk/linen blend would have. Thanks, Karina.
Thank you. This was one of the most interesting videos I've seen in a long time. I had no idea how linen was made. I appreciate the time that went into making this helpful content.

Nice video. Thanks.
So nice of you :)
I do appreciate your time and effort in making these vlogs! Thank you 🥰
I watched a TH-cam video about an abandoned 1700s convent in France. The found lots of linen there.
Wow, what a find!
I am enjoying your videos that have been featuring fabric types,. Your are providing wonderful information that is very helpful.
I have recently begun sewing with a rayon/linen blend and really like sewing with it, so I have bought more of it. Well, you have to, don't you? :-)
Thank you
Really informative TY!
Thanks!
Thank you Karina, this is so helpful. I love linen but haven't sewn with it before! Now I can't wait to make some garments for my southern hemisphere trip next February!
Thank you Karina. The timing of this series is perfect. i am getting ready to sew my daughter in law a dress out of some absolutely beautiful linen.
Thankyou so much. That was super informative and helpful.
You are very welcome 😀
I thought I knew a lot about linen .. but I was SO wrong. This video was packed full of information. Thank you for all your hard work and research, you are very much appreciated.

I hear you on the fear! I have a silk piece my dad bought me in 2010 and I have still to sew it up!
Brilliant video, Karina! I love linen, so you are definitely preaching to the converted with me! 😁 I am very excited to watch the rest of your mini series, thank you so much 🙏
Thank you! Want to make pants
Great information 👍 I love the look and feel of linen while it's still on the roll but will never buy it. I truly dislike the creases!
That’s fine. I know creases are not for everyone but they are not so bad after washing it several times.
My hubby and son both got covid at the same time. So I was a bit busy caring for them this past week. They are on the mend now.
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles I can imagine. So pleased they're on the mend.
Great information. Thanks. Any tips on how to iron the whole fabric without it falling off the ironing board and ending up on the floor?
Thanks for this video. I have just bought my first linen so that I can make some walking shorts, this video was very helpful. there is a Linen field where I live and have always been a bit curious when I see it getting harvested.
Excellent as usual.
Cool!
I would have though that a little bit of polyester would solve the wrinkle problem in linen.
Yes but it feels scratchy on the skin. I have purchased this blend before and don’t like the way it feels.
