    I know this has been asked below- about the Samyang 24/1.8. But after owning the Samyang, i can’t see it getting much better than that. The Samyang is light, its IQ is fantastic and the price is great. I’m a fan of Sigma, but they’ve kinda underwhelmed me of late.

    This could be a great lens for hybrid shooters that want to mount there camera on a gimbal -- being smaller and lighter is a benefit for that situation. Focus breathing isn't ideal, but if you can control for that this lend is just about ideal for me. As a stills photographer, being able to carry several lenses while hiking is a huge plus.

      Do you really need to ask this question? Man just look at how gorgeous the build quality of this lens is compared to that dinky simple build quality of Samyang, which even is the best they did for their AF lenses sofar but is miles away from this piece of luxury! I think this lens main competitor is the Sony 24mm G f2.8, almost same price and same build quality. But 2 different major difference, 200g lighter vs 1 stop brighter! Which ever fulfills your need you will choose the right one! Samyang will be the budget option and I'm sure they soon will reduce its price even more

      Hmm from where I'm sitting, build quality is about the *only* area where the Sigma has a real advantage over the Samyang.
      That's fine but it makes the lens heavier and dearer. I'm leaning towards getting the Samyang.

    Interesting! For my use case (mostly landscape with some indoor work), I think I’ll take the 3.5! It seems marginally sharper at a higher pixel pitch, which means it’ll be more future proof, and that close focus is very convenient.

      Hi! Could you add Sigma 30 1.4 to the comparison basket, just for APS-C users? In APS-C this is a great alternative for 24 mm lenses - I would love to switch to some compact 35 mm equivalent though and it's quite a challenge to choose the right lens, without loosing too much. Sigma 30 is cheap, sharp, relatively small and my first Samyang 24 1.8 was, unfortunately, less sharp and with more CA than in most reviews, so feels like a step down on A6400.

    Thanks for this review as always Chris! There are quite a few requests coming in for a comparison with the recent Samyang... but since there's a good number of 24mm options for Sony now (we have the Sony f/1.4, the Tamron and Samyang f/2.8s, the new Samyang f/1.8, the old Sigma A f/1.4, and these two Sigma I-series options), how about a comparison of several?

      @@WalterRitchey Chris has done this comparison now, though it doesn't include the old Sigma f/1.4. I tried all four (Sony f1.4, Sigma A f1.4, Sigma I f2, and Samyang f1.8) at The Photography Show in my country, and my own conclusion was that the Sony was the best, hands down - as you'd probably expect. I couldn't test sharpness, but in terms of handling, the Sigma f1.4 is really big and heavy, the Sigma f2 feels really nice and amazing quality, and yes, the Samyang feels cheap. I also had a problem with that particular Samyang where it made the camera (a7r iii) freeze up and black out, and wouldn't take any pictures until the battery was reinserted. Something else to note is that there is a surprisingly real difference in background blur amount between the f2 and f1.4 models, with the f1.8 closer to the f2, I'd say.

    I don't understand how some lenses are worse in the corners on APS-C than on full frame. I always thought full frame lenses were better in the corners on APS-C because it's basically just a 1.5x crop into the image circle (typically cropping out the weaker extreme corners). If you crop into the A7RIII files 1.5x times shouldn't the corners be just as sharp as the APS-C images? I just don't get it. I guess it has something to do with the difference in pixel density but it's still very confusing to me.

    • @HH60gPaveHawk
      @HH60gPaveHawk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is the pixel pitch is 3.88 µm. That’s actually worse than even the a1 which has a pixel pitch of 4.16 µm and about the same as the a7riv. What you’re seeing in the APSC body is that the sensor is out resolving the lens. Every lens does this at a certain point, apparently this lens hits it at somewhere between 200 and 250 lines per mm (1000/pixel pitch)

    • @tvurk
      @tvurk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HH60gPaveHawk Ok, I think I get it. So if you test this lens on the Sony a7R IV with 61 MP and a pixel pitch of 3.73 (slightly lower than 24 MP APS-C) than the corners would show the same softness as this lens on APS-C?

    • @HH60gPaveHawk
      @HH60gPaveHawk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent review that I trust.
    I'm in the market for a 24 and it's either this lens or the Sony 24/2.8 G lens which is available in the UK for a bit less (deals), is smaller and weighs less and apparently performs as well if not better (per Lens Rental) but is not an F2.
    Comparison with the Samyang 24/1.8 is interesting but their lenses are not for me. I know from personal experience (and anecdotal evidence on the WEB) that Samyang's Quality Control can let that marque down. Moreover, their build quality is unimpressive. They are usually going at an attractive price but maybe it's a case of getting what you pay for.

      The Sony 2.8 IQ is not as good as this Sigma. The only Sony worth getting to compare is the 24 GM at double the price. The Samyang is good but I don’t like their build quality. They’ve stepped up their IQ vs there older stuff though.

    @christopherfrost I had to give you vote down for basically non existing AF testing. Whole 10sec with two bottles. You need to completely rework you testing. How about AF-S, AF-C, tracking, eye af, face detection, low light AF testing? You have none of that, just sharpens all over.

      So you're going to dislike and discount the entire video because the autofocus test wasn't exactly the way you like it? Pretty narcissistic...

      @@christopherfrost Well, for a priest you are very "easy" on judging/labeling people you don't know just because you didn't like some criticism about your work. Also, you should check another priest on the other side of the pond and how he test lenses and take criticism, you could learn a lot.

      @@mralexlex Ah, I see - so you're allowed to be as cheeky as you like in my comments section, and if I point it out, then somehow I'm guilty of being judgemental? How convenient for you! :-) I'm not judging you personally, I'm judging your behaviour, and I believe, correctly. You're giving an entire video review a downvote just because you don't *precisely* like the *exact* way that one factor is being tested, and you're boasting about it in my comments section in order to try and goad me into changing things to be the way you want them, while saying silly things like the video is just "sharpens all over" [sic]? That's narcissism, in my book. If you're referring to Jesus' teaching on judgement, then you've misunderstood what he was teaching: He taught people not to judge hypocritically (Matthew 7:5). If you believe that my own behaviour is narcissistic somehow, then please point out exactly how, and I'd be happy to correct myself. I'm always happy to listen to ideas from people about how to improve my reviews...but being just plain rude is something else.

      You cannot be serious! (John McEnroe, Wimby 1981).
      Oh boy, if I knew that one downvote will cause such a stir in your ego I would just unsubscribe (as I already did) and move on.
      Anyhow, yours torrent-like answer and psychological drive behind it, speaks volume about yourself. You simply cannot handle a constructive criticism. I never ever wrote anything about your behavior or appearance or wording or anything else but your AF testing. Let me repeat myself, sorry for hurting your ego once more, your AF testing is subpar. Period. Not more than 10 secs with two bottles and that's it! If you think that is ok, well I do not and I said it. This is a public channel, right!? People can put their opinion, right?
      Did I wrote ad hominem comment? Nope! "Cheeky and narcissistic behavior" is ad hominem in any Book of Decency and that's pretty sad for a priest or TH-camr.
      "Hiding" behind Jesus and Gospel, regarding circumstances, is just plain wrong! Good luck!

      @@mralexlex That's another kinda narcissistic comment, hehe ;-) please don't worry, my ego hasn't been bothered at all. Yes, you're absolutely welcome to your opinion - but if you're rude and narcissistic in giving it out, then I'm going to point that out to you, and you'd do well to reflect on how you yourself take criticism :-) incidentally, an ad hominem attack, by definition, is when someone attacks your *character* - not your *behaviour* - and as I've mentioned, I'm not having a go at you personally (I have no idea who you are) - just your attitude. Also, not really sure what you mean by ""Hiding" behind Jesus and Gospel" [sic] as you put it. All the best though :-)
