We are lucky where we is. Lots to listen to. Got a PRO 2020 in the shop. A PRO 2040 in the kitchen, a PRO 2037 in our project room and a Uniden bearcat in the truck. Yup we nosey lol. . Only 1/2 mile from the lake so we hear all the boneheads here for vacation sinking boats, gettin in fights and the usual party stuff lol. Better than TV. God i miss RADIO SHACK!
People underestimate the value of a radio shack scanner . There’s a ton on eBay still and I’m glad . I have a couple NIB from years ago , but I’m gonna get a couple of these older ones soon before they eventually become extinct or overpriced . Good video Erik 👍
Good video! My Realistic Pro-2002 became obsolete when all the police and fire departments where I live went to the 800 trunking system. It still works as good as the day I bought it.
I have one sitting in front of me right now. It’s a tank. Mine the AC power side of it quit, so I cut all that off the circuit board and just run it on 12v. Great sound quality from it. Unfortunately most of the public service here is digital and the amateur radio is about 70% C4FM. But I still find things to listen to with it. Program 437.800 in it, that is the receive frequency for the ISS amateur crossband repeater and every time the International Space Station passes over head you will hear hams using it.
Awesome scanners the 20??s. Ran a few, last one a 2042 ran for 10+ yrs, my repair guy fixed a couple times. Always worked great, had to give it up since my area went mostly digi sill run a shack base and Pro 106, multiple GRE 500s. Coming at you from FEMA region 5 !
I just picked up a PRO-2022 for $20 at a local thrift store today it is like new and works great i had one just like back in the day it looks great in my ham shack
I just got a pro-2020 for free from my grandpa today and it seems to work pretty well. I have never owned a scanner but I found a bunch of local frequencies and they work great. Only thing I can’t figure out is the manufacturer date.
Scanners can be a lot of fun. some of the counties near us are still on them. It is a great way of keeping in touch of what is really going on around you
I have two very similar Pro 2020 scanners, one in the house and one in the shop. Sadly almost everything is encrypted now. I can listen to the garbage company, Lol. But still, nice radios to have for aircraft and maybe a few other things. Thanks for the review.
I always dreamt of having one of them scanners, i scored an older model 3 years ago, When the time is right i may hunt down that model too and squire it.
I hope all is well with you and your family ; the many others in the area affected by Helene. I found your channel watching video after Helene. I am not a full blown preper but, have been making efforts to be somewhat prepared in case of emergencies. I noted your video of the Realistic scanner, and got one from eBay with the built in antenna. I am not a radio/scanner person! I’ve programmed a number of local channels but have not head any communications on the scanner. I do have to say that I’ve only ran it for a couple of hours at a time and not late at night so… Questions: 1 what kind of external antenna can I get to improve reception? 2 not hearing anything- would this indicate that my local authorities use digital communications, Do I need to get a digital scanner? What would be a good digital scanner for a novice? 3 what Hand held GMRS set would you recommend? BAOFENG UV-9R Pro UV-5G Plus GM-15Pro Digital scanner? Uniden BC355N
So, I would look for a Tram 1410 antenna it really helps! Than check on radioreference to find all the stations in use in your county and the counties around you. Add all of them in, and the scanner you have also works on HAM so you can enter in all the nearby Ham repeaters. As for digital scanners, I'm just now looking into it myself and it's a difficult thing to program for these digital signals. Good luck!
Just get Realistic PRO 2022 today... I like those old scaners... I have PRO 2035 ( really great), handy PRO 37, UBC9000XLT and some more modern too like UBC785XLT, ICOM R6, ICOM R20, Yaesu VX500 but still there is big pleasure to use vintage ones. On top it's extreme easy to add discriminator output to the old scanner. It allow to receive modern digital transmissions like DMR (Motorola), Fusion, D-Star, Pro voice and other by DSD + software.
Last transmission was " she was extremely 10-56" You mean people in the mountains get intoxicated? How do they keep from falling down and rolling off a mountain? I use an iphone app to listen to local police, fire and rescue here since I would need a trunk-tracking scanner. Banner Elk bound in 3 weeks!
Hello, I need some help with a 1978 Realistic Patrolman 5. I need a picture of the Bandswitch stringing. It popped of before I could take a picture, now I can't figure out how it was strung. Would you have one disassembled? Its under the circuit board. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
How is it, every time I score a deal on a classic realistic radio or scanner, and I take a look on TH-cam for tips or reviews... there's Eric from Farpoint farms!! Just scored one of these!! And a DX 394! !
I have a realistic pro 2021.Can you tell me what aerial plug I need for the radio and also what telescopic antenna with as not come with this great radio.Thank you.
Hi there, I'm a complete newbie about radios, but I'm getting into it. I’ve seen an advertisement recently that caught my eye of a Realistic 400 pro-2005. I would like to buy it, but I kind of remember watching a video saying that most of the frequencies nowadays, especially police, fire fighters, etc., are digital. I'm not sure, but I think the 400 pro-2005 is not digital, right? So, it would be fair to say this model of scanner is not that worthy anymore, isn't it? Am I correct? What could I still do with this kind of model? Thanks in advance.
It's true that in larger cities most have gone digital. Here in the sticks, This is still a great radio. I get the dispatch calls, the fire calls, the bus drivers for the school system, the school system, local gov calls, and Ham radio repeater calls. Still pretty cool in my book!
Question? Where can i find the top screw in antenna for a Realistic pro-2021 model 20-113 300 channel scanner it got bent & broke about 1 1/2 in from the bottom. My step-dad bought it new & he passed 2yrs ago. It still works & picks-up local LEO chatter. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.
Hope all is well . Have a question about a scanner my great uncle just gave me after finding out I got my GMRS license. It’s a Radio Shack 200 channel Pro 2037 and it has a 3 piece slide out antenna. Was wondering if there is a better antenna I can add on to make it a better scanner? It’s in great shape(after doing a little dusting to it) and would appreciate any tips and tricks to it from you. Thanks in advance…. Love the channel….
Sorry would like to add I want to put the antenna outside on my 35 foot mast I installed. It has a comet antenna for my RT97 repeater and a digital Omni directional antenna for TV. Just so you know what’s there in case of interference. Again thanks.

Last year I bought both the Uniden SDS100 and Whistler TRX-1 to compare. Uniden has a great screen but the Whistler stayed on a transmission longer. My old Uniden BC355n outperformed both though (in getting analog signals). It picked up signals before the other two and waited for transmission to end. Both SDS and TRX cut off during transmission. All 3 scanners were locked on the same frequency. So the TRX was a little better than the SDS and since it gets DMR and NXDN out of the box, and was $300 cheaper (got it for $424 thru a seller on Walmart) than the SDS100, I kept that and returned the SDS100. One thing that ticks me off is, a lot of the cops don't hold the mic to their mouthes when talking, and they don't speak up either. You can barely hear what they're saying. Especially the ones who talk fast.
I have the patrolman pro-16a. I'm not sure if it's working properly because of how the lights flash. Do you know of another resource besides Reddit for getting answers?
It's a pity it has a dead spot from 136M-138M Weather Sats download the images between 137.1M and 137.9125M that Line Audio Out would have made it real easy to hook to a computer.
Just got this for $15. Some design flaws and curiosities. Like, why can't you just input a frequency and go to it, without going through program hassle? But for a first time user I like it for $15...

Those old Radio Shack scanners were great. Like you said, easy to program and easy to use. I wish they still made them like this.
I got that one! I've used it for year. Instead of adjusting squelch to stay on channel, tap Manual once, that stops the scan function.
Good video! My Realistic Pro-2002 became obsolete when all the police and fire departments where I live went to the 800 trunking system. It still works as good as the day I bought it.
