  • Michael Redmond 9p, hosted by the AGA E-Journal’s Chris Garlock, reviews the 38th game of the amazing AlphaGo vs. AlphaGo selfplay games. The 50-game series was published by Deepmind after AlphaGo's victory over world champion Ke Jie 9p in May 2017. Redmond: "This game starts with a complicated variation on the 3-3 invasion, then goes on to a completely different part of the game where a ko is the focus, and then there's a lot of trippy stuff with ladders and finally there's some life and death problems." Garlock: "A little bit of everything."

Thank you again, Michael and Chris, for another amazingly entertaining and instructive commentary. In every commentary, there are a number of places where I just shake my head in wonder at AlphaGo's subtlety, depth, and creativity. Very enjoyable.

Game 38 already? Wow. Time flies when I'm having fun. Out of 40 games, right? I can barely wait to see what's next.

The early black 3-3 at C3 is only one of eight variations in AlphaGo Teach's database after white connects at C16. AGT thinks the 3-3 is just as good as black connecting at D14 instead.
The first 23 moves of this game are completely included in AGT's database. It gives white 57 % after black plays R4.

If it's from self-play training, the mechanic may be the noise that is added to ensure it sees enough variation to learn further.

Is go inherently funny? I think it gets funnier the better you understand it.

Thanks for that comment; I agree! I've noticed that go players often laugh about the game, which I don't think e.g., chess players do. It must have something to do with Aristotle's observation that comedy portrays men as worse than they are. Go has a way of somehow bringing out the worst in us, not only our stupidity but our vices, which can be very funny, especially with people whose personal foibles are familiar to you.
