- Soil is the backbone for next year's vegetable growth. The end of the slack year is an ideal time to rebuild healthy soil.
Today I would like to share with you our ways to build healthy soil and fertilize our California vegetable garden in winter. We mainly used two different methods - one is the bokashi (the easiest composting system especially suitable for a small garden, or balcony garden), and the other is winter cover crops/green manure.

Thank you so much for sharing these tips, it's a really helpful video. I'm new to vegetable gardening and have been thinking of trench composting food scraps to improve my soil, and I'm also curious about cover crops for next autumn. I'll definitely look into the bokashi method, because my vegetable garden is a 30 minute walk away (I live in the UK and have an allotment) so it'd be useful to have a clean, simple composting method to do at home and then I could take the fermented scraps down to the garden in one go. I love your gardening videos, they're always so beautiful and informative.
Thank you! I have seen some UK gardeners mentioning this allotment system before, and just googled a little bit more. it is quite a unique system with a long history! Gardening is a very rewarding experience for us, like today, we noticed some new asparagus shoot coming out of ground and totally made our day! Good luck with your new garden as well!
It's a amazing video and the it's also very helpful. I am planning to plant some new plants and I actually needed this video. Your videos are always amazing. I don't know how many times have I told you this but I can't stop being Mesmeris by your videos. When ever I watch your videos I love it. Thank you for always making amazing videos. I have been watching your videos for quite a long time now and your videos are always amazing.Merry Christmas 🎄 and also Happy New Year!! 🎉
Thank you always for such kind words, we are happy to have you! Hope all is best and happy new year to you
I've been so pleasantly surprised by my bokashi experience! I was sure it would end up smelling or attracting vermin but not at all. I wonder if winter cover crops would be something to consider for my patio garden, which is all in containers... something to look in to! Will be interested in a video about your experience with this crazy winter storm. Hope you're staying safe and warm!
One good thing about Bokashi is because the fermentative nature, the sourness of food scrape discouraged a lot of animals. Stay safe and warm! California is less affected by the winter storm, but it has been raining for a week now (plants are quite happy at least)
recently started bokashi composting and love it so far! hopefully more people jump in on the bokashi trend :)
I just found your channel and have been binge watching. I've used Bokashi for 3 years now. I have 2 buckets and rotate them constantly. When there is an abundance I place it in a trash bin with additional soil to breakdown. Love your videos!!
I use a tumblr. There is always leakage when i spin it. The brown and green ratio must be wrong. So I recently bought a bokashi compost bin, too. Your channel is so inspirational. I love watching your vegetable garden. Your plants are always healthy with shiny green leaves. That must be from the bokashi!
thank you! we recently pickup compost bin again, will share if it turns out successfully
好厲害
My strawberry plants are in a container. But the leaves are curled up and also have white stuff on them. What problem do you think it is? Do they also need a lot of sun? Thank you for all your videos! Really enjoyed watching them!
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed them! Without a picture it is hard to guess the problem, sorry about that😔 If you give them plenty of water they can do great in the sun and produce lots of strawberry. Otherwise they still perform nice in partial shade - just a bit less fruit.
Okay. Thanks again!
Ah to share in happiness of earthworms
Is there any alternative of bokashi bran? I heard you can use butter milk. Is it true?
I am not sure, I never tried butter milk🧐
You can make your own with rice water and milk and later some sugar. Takes about 2 weeks.
텃밭도 예쁘고 영상도 예뻐요. 나라가 어디인지 궁금하네요. 보카시 검색해봐야겠어요. ^^
