Gabriel's SickKids Story

Gabriel was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) at the age of six months. Infant ALL represents about two per cent of paediatric ALL cases and is not only much harder to treat than childhood leukemia but also has a much lower cure rate.
When Gabriel was diagnosed he was very sick and doctors indicated that survival rates for this type of cancer were documented at 40 per cent. Gabriel was admitted to the hospital immediately and spent the next six months almost exclusively in the hospital being closely monitored. Gabriel experienced several long chemo cycles which could only be administered in-hospital.
In October 2012, Gabriel was discharged home to continue treatments as an outpatient, although he still comes to the hospital for periodic chemo treatment. He will continue to receive chemo until May 2014.
