    Love this!!!
    Building my pen this year and will have two small pastures. Going the same route, no grain and no dewormer. I’ll have an elevated, slatted floor system for the sheep to always been in at night and my plan is to spray vinegar water monthly.

    What do you do with the carcass of the dead sheeps due to illness? Do you need to cremate them , or is it Okay to eat/feed them to the dogs?

    Love what you’re doing.
    So you said they had a splash of Florida cracker blood- what makes that breed so hardy is they were left alone to survive on their own… all the weak links were taken out. If people culled their flock more often they’d have a hardier flock and wouldn’t have to pull lambs all the time or deworm often.
    To some it’s being a neglectful shepherd… to me it’s playing it smart.

      If you get rid of the wolf, you must become the wolf. Eat the weakest of the herd and make the herd stronger. Most humans have neglected these truths.

    What’s your thoughts on st.croix and dorper cross… I’ve got st.croix ewes and was thinking of putting a katahdin ram on them.?
    Or a dorper to get a thicker meaty carcass. Enjoy your videos. Thx

      @brianlaney7470 I think adding something easier fleshing with deep body to the st croix would definitely help. That's one of the biggest downfalls of many st croix. Needs depth in carcass and lots of them are too leggy.

    I’m from Nac. Looks great. Looking for some sheep for meat/milk (NOT looking for a gallon a day out of a ewe) production. How often are you rotating?

    Question for you. We have only probably 3weedy usable acres in tropical rainforest on top of rough lava. If i were to get some fencing set up, buy a ram and a couple ewesof a parasiteresistantbreed. , would I need to separate my buck or could I just leave him in all the time and process once a year?

    • @counterculturefarms
      @counterculturefarms  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could just leave him in all year long but you will probably get some lambs in different times of the year instead of just spring lambs. Not a big deal if you just have a few ewes to manage. Some of them will breed back after lambing if you leave ram in.

      If winter is not an issue what are the advantages of having only spring lambs?

      Doesn't the meat taste better if the rams are kept away?

    Do you let rams all time with the flock or do you remove them some months for planning lambing season?

  • @bitslittle
    @bitslittle ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm in a tropical region where I have lots of grass/vegetation. I plan to do sheep and want animals like this. One thing I haven't got clear on is if it's ok to keep breeding back to the same ram. Would you keep back a ram lamb every few years, every year or how do you prevent problems of inbreeding or is it even a problem? I was hoping to start with a ram and 3-6 ewes and grow according to how they are eating what I've got.

    • @counterculturefarms
      @counterculturefarms  ปีที่แล้ว

      We raise ram lambs out of the flock every year that breed at 6-8 months old then they are retired and repeat that with next year's lamb crop.

    I love you and Greg Judy view of sheep raising. Built bullet proof sheep. Too bad you can't mix in badger or wolverine so they can defend themselves, lol.

    Not only are humans making the animals weak, they're doing it to other humans. :( I will be in contact soon, going to start a flock here north of Woodville.

    In Africa we ve breeds that we called citizens, they are so strong n healthy, n they feed on only grasses, n yet the healtiest plus, they ve resistance n dn need all these medication craps, the sheeps are exactly like the ones Americans called Katadin breeds they are our African breeds they can resist alot n ve the best meat ratio

    Genuine ask: why do Texans love sheep? It’s so hot….

    • @counterculturefarms
      @counterculturefarms  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They don't. Most people just raise cattle here. These Hair sheep do well here after years of selective breeding but most sheep are raised in the other drier parts of Texas. We don't raise wool sheep cause we don't want the extra maintenance shearing, trimming, etc. But go west of us and there are more sheep and goats. Harder to raise them here in the subtropics.
