Thank you! I really tried to be as precise on the exact pictures I see when hearing some of these songs. Ambient music really has the ability to make such wonderful imaginary images, emotional and physical sensations in the mind 💙
@@musene I love that you explain what’s on my mind, perfect description for Ambient music. With this song, I imagine a life with my wife on a farm, set lots of years in the past. I’m coming home after a hard day's work, really tired. As I get closer to our house on the cliff, I stop and take a look-watching the sunset with shades of orange and purple and a bit of fog in the background. There’s this soft breeze that moves my hair and calms me down; feeling like a gentle touch to my face telling me “it’s okay, now rest”. In that moment, I feel so grateful and blessed, loving my family and the life we've built. The flute in it somehow makes me feel nostalgic for a life I never had, but it feels so real and familiar.
I love this album. It's like a gauntlet: If you want to listen to it's upbeat gems, it's happy memories, and it's cheerful tunes... You have to run the gauntlet. You have to listen to disturbing songs like Hankie, Tree, the White Blurs... You just gotta do it. Interspursed with vivid, vast landscapes of decay and hopelessness, of death and distruction, of omnipresent evil... You also get visions of happiness, of beauty, of life, and of content. It's beautiful, really. Almost like life. This album made me appreciate happiness more.
I genuinely love White Blur 2. I completely understand why people don't care for it, especially since it was included on the CD version in lieu of Stone in Focus. However, to me, it creates the same feeling as what I would assume being hypnotized feels like and its repetitiveness has actually helped me fall asleep before. There's just something about it that makes it oddly soothing for me.
#8, Blur is what introduced me to Aphex Twin. It was played at the end credits for one of the Sopranos episodes. Thus, that track will always be memorable for me.
Had to watch the video the second time right after the first one. Phenomenal work, probably the deepest video on this album yet, I dreamed of a video like this. Keep up the work and I hope to see your videos in my recommendations in the future again, goated video
@@pokotaykin Thank you so much for the kind words! Means a lot to me 💙 The video is a bit rough considering it's my debut, but I hope to become better as I progress (I'll be doing a review of the repressing of SAW 2 as well when it arrives)

Yep, my favorite album ever. Whenever someone asks me what is my favorite song I answer Ventolin. If they listen to it and still talk to me I know we can be friends
Funny enough, I heard bits of this album before NIN took stage in May 2000. And the bit that caught my ear and would be committed to memory was … “white blur 2”. I was very fortunate to find a copy of the original UK CD, which was the most complete form of the album at that time. (19 or “stone in focus” could be obtained digitally if you got the Astralwerks issued compilation disc: Excursions in Ambience - The Third Dimension). I loved it immediately. I already had a predilection toward ambient and experimental and this satisfied those tastes easily. And why I loved it was it could easily spark imagination. Some of what you described was pretty close to how I could hear it, but I have my own images. For instance the field I see during “grass” is actually the “killing fields” of Cambodia. “parallel stripes” sees a Martian sunrise or sunset and “tassels” is surviving inside a plane fuselage that crashed into snowy mountains. “rhubarb” sees a tropical oasis hidden inside an airport and “lichen” is spending time with a lover. It’s sonic world building at its finest and it’s something that not only I like in listening to music, but also what I try to do in making my own. Cheers and happy listening =]
Agree with the title. I can remember very vividly the first time I heard this album. Love the entire thing. So varied, and yet cohesive. Even the "harsh" stuff is great. Grew up listening to punk, and had already gotten into drone and noise stuff by the time I heard this. So it didn't really give me pause to hear a repeating siren sound with a sample of a broken refrigerator that's distorted (have not idea what it is! Fugazi's "In on the Kill Taker pretty much got rid of any reservations I had about loud, indecipherable sounds. Loved it!) The impressions given were interesting to hear. So often what we hear is in sum our experience. Recall a friend describing some sounds on an experimental albums as "demons". But I didn't hear it like that all. Nothing sounded "evil" or anything. Will say this though: one track always invokes a very vivid image of being in a cave with a stone slab in it. The slab is meant to function as a bed, and the cave is a dream incubation cave in Ancient Greece. This image occurred long before I knew much about RDJ and his use of dreaming to make music (like before the internet). Desert island disc for sure. Could someone convince Warp to do another run of the cassettes for the 30 year anniversy? Missed that first one they did.
I've only been listening to this album for half a year and it's probably top 10 of all time. This album does an amazing job of making me view my life in 3rd person if that makes sense. We're all thrown into this existence and go about our lives mindlessly but albums like this put all of that to one side and powerfully think about who we are. Are we doing the right things? How do we effect those around us? Will we as humans find answers to life's big questions? I also love reading the comment sections for the videos of the songs on this album to know what other people think of when they hear these tracks as they're always different to mine.
I listened to radiator and I actually got a very soothing, pleasant image in my head of two glowing fish swimming in a deep blue water. their light sometimes going out, then popping back in again. it was a wonderful feeling this album is magical
That is a really interesting visual to imagine. Very creative! I love hearing different interpretations of the songs from this album, and also fascinating to hear people finding something soothing and warm in a track like Radiator. I love hearing people's interpretations of the songs, and your comment is a nice contribution to it 💙
white blur 2 is actually one of my favourites. i get an image in my head of someone in a dark hall at night talking to someone else or bikini bottom from spongebob squarepants at night and noone is awake or a mix of both. i get why people dont like it though since its long and can be interpreted as creepy. i feel engaged listening to it though and i actually find it comforting or even nostalgic.

The appeal was automatically retracted too, about 15 minutes later after the original issue. It came as a surprise to me too lol I'm glad nothing more happened haha
I haven't watched the video but I first just wanted to say this. I'm somewhat a fan of Aphex Twin (Richard) but I prefer 'Boards of Canada' to a greater extent, (and musicians similar) I discovered both BoC and Afx roughly around a similar time frame in my life. For whatever I reason always liked/preferred 'SAWV2' to SAW 85-92 (my favourite from him); believing thats an unpopular/ uncommon feeling among the Afx fanbase. In fact out of all Richards music I listen to the tracks on 'SAW 85-92' the least.
The TH-cam channel (guy I think) 'on4word' has made plenty of music, a whole album in fact covering Aphex Twin's music. I really like his cover of 'Stone in Focus' (technically he has two different ones on the album). The main one on his TH-cam channel is worth checking out? If you do or have already. Whats your opinion of it?
@@kaylemkerr6989 Oh yeah! I've been a pretty dedicated fan of on4word's work ever since his Flim, 4, and Roygbiv covers from like 2 years ago. I think the dude has made some of the best covers of classic IDM tracks to the Nintendo 64 soundfont. I personally believe his best AFX cover was his Rhubarb cover (the video with the slow timelapse, featuring the Great Deku Tree from Ocarina of Time), as the song in a minor chord makes it even more heart wrenching and sorrowful. I love his stuff
