You cracked me up when you introduced the "SWISS" bag! :D It is a Swedish armed forces gas mask bag. The pockets are intended to store extra filters, rubber gloves and other counter measures for bacterial, chemical, radiological and nuclear attacks....
The German one is a Luftwaffe bread bag, most likely West German, and FYI the little J Hook buckles were to hang from the belt, similar to civil war style you'd cross shoulder your haversack and then put the waist belt over, the hook would keep it in place and take SOME weight off the shoulder
Have ordered many items from SG. Price is hard to beat. In 35 years I only encountered one problem. A surplus pack arrived and stank to high heaven. I tried to soak and scrub it to no avail. Called SG just to see what they would say. They handled it like champs. Refunded my CC charge and advised me to dispose of the item, which I did. Great customer service.
Thank you for sharing these. I've been looking for this type of bag for a while. And have been nervous about actually making the purchase. You never know for sure what you'll get from military surplus unless you see it in person. So this helped greatly. Thanks again.
Thanks Brian, you have done it again. I have been looking at for an edc/outdoors/catchall , and that Czech bag may be the ticket. The idea of you comparing offerings from SG is sound to me, i hope more to come.

Solid overview… But you’re killing me my friend. I’m working on videos for a few of those same bags that I got at a military surplus store here in New England 😂
I use the Polish bread bag as a get home bag in my truck, and I made another one for my wife. She uses it for rock hounding and berry collecting. Works great for both uses
The bag at 10:09, is the Polish Bread Bag. I have two. Both in new condition. A very good bag. Mine where like two for a reasonable price. As for the straps on the back I am reasonably certain, those are for attaching said bag too a bigger pack. If any one knows, please let me know. Yes all the little pockets are for condiments and other eating type items. The buckles on the front are to close the bag, look closer at the picture.
I don't know, I kind of like the Dutch Gas Mask bag. Looks plenty sturdy and the fold over top will prevent items inside from falling out. A fixn' wax coating would weather seal it and make a pretty nice bag. Thanks for the reviews...
Yeahh and a lot of campers/bushcrafters easily modify these military surplus shoulder bags by sewing are have molle webbing, canvas hatchet handle loops, velcro to the outsides, sides, lids of these to make them more mission specific useful for whatever each person needs to carry, CHEAP AND VERY GOOD QUALITY.
I would pick the same you did. Blue bag and the waterproof bag! Their not American bags, and their not brand new, but not bad for the price. I carry a back pack that I found in a trash truck. It’s been a great bag. But when I need to grab something out of it, I end up having to dig inside and feel for whatever I’m looking for. I definitely need a haversack. That would make it easier to find stuff out my pack! As usual, thanks Bryan for the great review!
Great video thank you. I’m looking for another haversack at the moment, I bought a Chinese bushcraft bag off eBay a couple of years ago for £15 and it’s fantastic. Unfortunately I can’t find them for sale now so will have to buy an ex military one, the German one you showed looks good.
When I was back at Fort Bragg back in the late 70s early 80s mid-eighties. I would go into the pawn shops and Army Surplus down there and see these things all over the place. I had a guy give me a vietnam-era buttpack with the suspenders. Actually still have it and I use it. Question Bryan what are you going to do with all those bags!
@@SurvivalOnPurpose Letting scouts use the bags and then giving them away? I don't believe that is going to be taken as a great gratuity as they'll be disappointed.
Thanks for doing this video, it's nice to see your take on these rather than going by pictures and descriptions online. I've been looking at different bags to pull some miscellaneous radio gear together into another kit and these are great options especially for the price point. I am curious what your more expensive bag you mentioned is like. Have you reviewed it in a video?
They're all good basic field bags, it's just a question of treating the cloth bags to up their 'water resistance' (to keep their 'wet weight' low). Given that you can get decent quality zip-lock bags in all sizes (up to a gallon), serious water-proofing is more of a luxury than a must. I'd only look at the gas mask bags if they can be re-hung so that the entry flap is 'up'...don't need the contents falling out when accessing the bag, otherwise, on the plus side, the bags interiors looked like they had been water-proofed.
Im pretty sure the loops and flaps on the backs of some of those are for securing them to a belt so they don't bounce around, get caught on things, swing around, etc. I bought a kind of messenger bag to use as a haversack, was marketed as a ~$100 messenger bag/shoulder bag, but built to look somewhat military-ish, that has a loop like that, very handy. Found it for $15 on FB Marketplace, from a sweet older lady lol. Yes, I'm literally carrying a purse around the woods :D
Yeah, okay that Dutch bag at 11:22, the straps on the back and buckles on the bottom, are so you can fit British L straps to it, and use it as a Back pack. Look up British 1937 Military L straps, you will see what I mean. Okay, that Dutch bag might be a modified British Pattern 1937 Small Pack, which you can use as a shoulder bag.
I was able to find a Yugoslavian/Croatian military haversack for five dollars at the Goodwill store, it's very cool. Nice selection, I'll check their site out.
The Swiss bag looks very well constructed, although I wonder how secure the contents would be with that side opening when you're scrambling through the bush.
