As a complete novice to carving this was an excellent guide for me, thank you very much, I picked up many tips to help me get started, Dragonflies are amazing, I photograph them extensively in wild habitats so I am definitely going to give this a go.
Nice nice, Dear Master. That gives me the idea to first carve a scarab beetle in the Egyptian style. Because it is more easy.. without the deployed wings. 😁
Hi, Do have a go, it is a great hobby and very rewarding ( you end up with something that will last for decades) Thank you for the encouragement and for watching.
Great job Steve. Two things came to mind while I was watching. The first was; I was wondering how many hours it took to complete the carving. The second thing was that this project you've done is going to be around for quite some time, hundreds and possibly thousands of years and someone is going to re-discover it one day and wonder how it came to be. I'd sign my name and date it if I was you Steve. Loved watching the video and the dragonfly taking shape. Thanks, Allan
Hi Allan, the carving initially took about six hours. But I was not happy with the finish so I spent another couple of hours the next day. This was a long one, carving into the end grain of slate was not one of my best ideas! It had not occurred to me to sign them, I think I will, thank you for the idea. Thank you for watching and for the kind comments.
Hi I have made two videos describing simple water feed systems, th-cam.com/video/PF7L0Cg3e0w/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/haPaX3ptaiI/w-d-xo.html. hope these help.
I Love carving slate, I found a large piece from inside maenoferen last year or so and only just decided to cut it...but damn it's messy, my mum didn't approve of the whole kitchen being covered in slate dust haha 🤣
Hi, surprisingly I don't go through a lot of bits it is hard to quantify as I use them so often, but not too many and since I rigged up my water supply they seem to last even longer. I don't think it needs a waterproof grease as the shaft doesn't seem to get wet. Now I'm going to sound daft, I don't know how to remove the inner shaft and i have never tried, I simply dribble 3 in 1 oil down the shaft every now and then. This does result in a little weepage sometimes so I dont use much. It is still working fine (touch wood!) Thanks for the kind comments and for watching.
Thank you so much! I was looking everywhere for a video where someone used a Dremel to carve stone and not handheld tools.
You are welcome!
@@thestonecraftingworkshop7490 I was wondering if you had any advice on how to make grapes and wheat in relief?
I learned more about bit
choices from your video than books/articles I have read. A tremendous help! Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!

You do really need a workshop or shed to work in. Enjoy the carving and try not to alienate your mum too much!
Great video Steve thanks. Just two questions, Did you go through a lot of bits, And do you have to use a water proof grease in your Flex Tool?

@@thestonecraftingworkshop7490 Hey Steve what kind of water pump do you use?
One day someone will pick up this piece and say. What tools, did Caveman use? 🤔
I should sign my work as "Ug". Cheers!
Beautiful work.
Thank you! Cheers!
