      Yes I agree. Thank you for your teachings. Great graphics too with split-screen, chord qualities, etc. to provide greater understanding of a really well-liked texture to use in one's jazz piano playing. Block chords give listener's something they can more easily "grab onto" (a much fuller sound) when hearing jazz improvisation, instead of hearing single line melodies. I like your discretionary comments too, (e.g. "Be careful not to play this chord too much!")...So true! Great work!

    I fell asleep listening to Bill Evans play these type voicings and thinking I wish I could figure out how he's voicing his chords because they are beautiful and then I wake up this morning and you just popped up on my TH-cam like an answer to a prayer. You just saved me a tremendous amount of time and work I will make excellent use of this and maybe one day I'll be able to show you some really hip stuff. What country do you live in I myself I am living in the state of New Mexico.

    the minor third dominant parallel structure is from gershwins prelude nos. 2. That is where everyone else got the idea which actually originated in the octotonic scale and its use by early 20th century composers like samuel barber.

    Hi, I was wondering how much pedal if at all, do you use while doing block chord solos? It seems like there is no pedal in your demonstration but it sounds like pedal is used once you started playing with the backing track. Also how do you recommend practicing the block chords so that you have control over volume of all the notes you play in a block chord? It seems like block chords doesn't sound good if you don't bring out the right notes out.

    • @sweetoldetc
      @sweetoldetc 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks for the feedback. I've transcribed over a dozen block chord solos since I started playing and I guess for me right now, it's not so much about what notes I should play on block chord solos, but how to play them so that it sounds right. One thing I noticed with great pianists like Bill Evans, George Shearing is that they have great control over the volume of each and every note they play when they play chords, and IMO playing block chord well requires that besides the note choices. If you have suggestions in that regard I'd appreciate it, thanks.

      Hi, Cherrie:
      1. Play the Bebop major scale in octaves.
      2. Block the chord by adding sixths to the first scale note (In this case: C).
      3. Then, on the 2nd note of the scale, add a Dim7 chord (In this case: D).
      4. Repeat step 2 on the next note of the scale (E), and step 3 on the next (F) - and so on. Every other key you'll add the 6th note, and every other key you'll add the Dim7.
      (When you get to the A note, add a D (The 6th note of the F scale).
      I hope it helped. Have a great weekend!
