Welcome to the rabbit hole of Rammstein. You need to check out their live videos. Their live shows are next level experiences. Their vocalist Till Lindemann is a trained pyrotechnic and they really use fire and explosives BIG TIME. In their last tour they had more than 70 trucks and over 200 people to work around
If you're just discovering Rammstein, then you're in for quite the journey! In my opinion, it's one of the most consistently great bands out there, they've yet to disappoint me. This isn't even close to their best song, I think, even if it is a banger. You can usually analyze their lyrics in many different directions, and their music videos are super entertaining and well made too. I'd love to watch you react to more Rammstein in the future!
I think it's interesting that when most people hear Rammstein the first time, it's always Du Hast. which is a great introductory song and really gets stuck in your heard. But like you said after a while, you find some other gems that are even better.
@@lry8133 I absolutely agree! Come to think of it, Du Hast was probably my first introduction to Rammstein as well, although it's been so many years now that I can't remember for sure.
I know everyone is going to say it but you need to watch this live as well. It's essential. They are always great live so you can't go wrong, but they also have the most impressive music videos by anyone ever so watch them as well. Watch everything.......at least seven times.
In German the title of this song is a play on words that cannot be directly translated into English. "Du hast..." in German means "You have...", while "Du hasst..." means "You hate..." In German both are pronounced identically and can only be distinguished from one another in the context of the sentence. It goes on with "Du hast mich..." (You have... me) or "Du hasst mich..." (You hate me). The German sentence "Du hast mich gefragt..." means "You have asked me...", which is where the context comes in on the last line and finally destroys the ambiguity. In German the word oder in the present perfect sentence is different than in English. A verbatim (word-for-word) translation of "Du hast mich gefragt" would be "You have me asked", which is why the play on words in German of "Du has(s)t mich..." works until the very last line where the participle "gefragt" (asked) appears, rather than in English, where it would have to come in a line earlier in the song context if would have been given in correct English word order.
I also think it is just absolutely genius to make this play on words in the context of marriage. "Will you marry me" is the question that is being asked and the play on words does imply hatred from one side which gives it a ridiculous irony.
Rammstein makes impressive videos, it always depends on the song whether the video or the live version is better. In the case of Du hast, I personally think the version "Rammstein: Paris - Du Hast (Official Video)" is much better.
Even speaking German sometime doesn't help you understand the meaning behind their lyrics immediately :D This was an old song. You should check out newer videos, like Deutschland and Angst, or even their incredible live shows... ;)
Sonne live 2022 is the most mindblowing thing you'll see by them. Well, that's not true, but it is good. Just about everything they do is either mindblowing or hilarious. Welcome to the R+ club. :)
As I life in Germany I can translate: "Du hast mich" meens "You got me" and is a song about relationship, marriage and the doubt`s about it. "Willst Du bis zum Tod der Scheide treu ihr sein für alle Tage? - NEIN" meens "Will you be faithfull till the Clitoris die`s? - NO" If you wanna react to something really crazy from them I would suggest "Mein Teil" live in Nimes (France) = you will freak out! ;)
It's 'bis der Tod euch scheidet' = 'till death you do part'. Like wedding vows in a church but 'you' instead of 'us'. No idea if that's a sentence in English but you get the idea. No clitorises or vulvas / vaginas are mentioned (which would be the more correct translation of 'Scheide').
I’m almost sad you didn’t get to experience this track as a first while viewing the ‘Iive in Moscow’ performance. Def need to watch that performance. Most 100% need to watch their masterpiece of a track and video Deutchland. One of the all time best music videos of all time in my opinion 👌👍
The close pronunciation between du hast (you have) and du hasst (you hate), plays on two meanings throughout the song-Du hast mich (you have me) and Du hasst mich (you hate me).
I mean everyone already said it. Get on the Rammstein LIVE train. They are the best band I have ever seen live. U want a super heavy song of theirs check out mein teil Live in Paris epic stage show too
Oh another Rabbit hole for you haha. These dudes have been around forever and are amazing live. Their music videos are like Movies, they are so good. Check out Deutschland, Angst, Adieu, Mutter or Engel. All amazing. Also check out live versions of this band too. You won't be disappointed.
This is probably covered in some other comments, but the lyrics are a play on traditional German wedding vows. The chorus, for example, says ‘do you want, until death separates you, to be faithful for all days’, to which the collective response in ‘Nein! (No!). This then correlates to the visuals in the video. A couple arrive at a barn where it appears that the man is going to go in and ‘kill’ his old life (i.e. friends) and become faithful to the woman. However, once inside, the man starts connecting with his past again (eg drinking with friends) and he is symbolically burned, before being ‘reborn’ back into his old life and emerging from the barn with his friends - at which point his potential new life (the car and woman) explode, symbolising the rejection of the new. A very ‘choppy’ song, and great for a gym playlist. Keep up the good work on the reactions 🇦🇺🤘
Their Albums "Herzeleid" and "Sehnsucht" really display their joy for experimentation and the fact that at the time Industrial Metal wasn't set in Stone - so to say. Tills singing basically gets "better" with the Album "Mutter". On the first two albums its more like phrasing - not so much real singing passages in most of their songs. As other people in the comments mentioned, Rammstein really play around with the lyrics and their meanings. Obviously it works best in german, but there are a lot of songs, even translated, that are quite on the nose and reflect a lot of political statements. The obvious one here is "Amerika". When it comes to Tills joy for poetry I'd recommend "Reise, Reise", "Seemann", "Mutter" and "Mein Herz brennt". For the more straight forward songs "Feuer Frei", "Spieluhr" and (my personal favourite) "Heirate Mich". The obvious classic you have to listen to is "Engel"; it is basically the starting point for their success and when you compare this song to other popular songs from other bands at the time (1996-1997) you will immeadiately see what set them apart from the rest!
do the live versions...these guys are like Nightwish, better live....I've seen KISS 3 times and thought they put on a show, but these guys are amazing live. I promise you'll appreciate it. "Du Hast Mich" means "you have me"
Speaking of the gym: if you competed in powerlifting in Germany 10-15 years ago, all you'd ever hear over the speakers at most meets would be either ACDC or Rammstein. Kinda felt like someone kept bringing the same two CDs ^^
The lyrics... ...NEIN!...NEIN! (Oh, and the dude that's betrayed his girl in this video is not an actor, but one of the members of the band. Drummer Christoph Schneider 😆🤟🇩🇪 And, the choral wails you hear before Till (Lindemann) goes NEIN! each time during the chorus, those are actually keyboard riffs...)
Rammstein! Welcome to the lords of metal. They have the best MVs on the the plant, the the best live shows! It means “You have me”, but there are many nuances missed in the translation. Check the live version. Let’s just say, they have pyrotechnic qualifications… Cheers mate.
This is definitely a simple tune for then, very radio friendly.. but it's really the gateway drug for them. Their riffs are not the most complicated but damn do they get you moving. This group has some epic videos like deutcheland, angst or dicke titten. It's their live shows that get the clicks and reaction channels due to their pyro.
This song brings back a lot of high school memories, excellent reaction 👍🏼 you should consider bringing Nymphetamine Fix from the band Cradle of Filth you will find it less curious, it is a very good song.
You gotta check out the Thy Art is Murder cover of this! Soooo heavy and CHOPPY Or anything by Thy Art is Murder 🤘 I highly recommend Killing Season or Reign of Darkness
Du - You Du hast - You have Du hast mich - You have ... me different grammar in English) Du hast mich gefragt - You have asked me Und ich hab nichts gesagt - And I said nothing It's about a wedding
Another great reaction mate. After discovery of Babymetal, Nightwish and Rammstein, now go to Arch Enemy and Sabaton - will no regret. And try more of their songs :)) Not only Nightwish :)))
Great reaction again but I`m wondering why the PPL asked you for the official Vid as the Live performance @ Madison Square Garden is the best Vid on this song?! (There you can also see Till`s talent as a full skilled pyromanic engeener) On my time as teamleader in a Roadie company we tried to get on Rammstein but Till and his guys are really selective who works for them and have their own, tied Crew.......sigh

I saw this band live back in September. They put on an amazing live show.
Rammstein does some crazy things. Check out some of their live shows.

Thie video is about the band's identity: purification by fire. The lyrics are catchy. Du muss ein bischen Deutsch lernen.
