Veela said that she was inspired by Takeko Nanako, a real-life female samurai in the 1800’s who fought in the Boshin war. She was unfortunately fatally wounded and died in battle. She was only 21. You can read her story online over on Rejected Princesses as it’s quite interesting but sad.
