Kitchen islands are my favourite things to talk about! Maybe I should do a whole series on kitchen islands alone! Sizing. Layout. Colour. Lighting for islands. Kitchen Island styles. The topics go on and on! What do you say??? Yay or...this one video is enough. LOL!

As I'm a retired contractor, don't forget that an island cook top with a down draft vent requires a duct for the exhaust and a sink requires a waste line with a vent and water lines. If your home has a pier and beam foundation with accessible crawl space this if feasible. If you have a slab be prepaired for a $10K to $15K plumbing bill to do the trench and tie in work.

Thank you, for this information. I am opening up my kitchen and inserting an island where the stove sits now. I wanted to switch the sink with the stove but we are on slab. That extra 10k+ is just now worth it.

    • @RCSTILE

@@deliasanchez201 Be sure to have electricity in your island and the plugs must be GFI'S if the island is within 6 feat of the sink

My architect suggests keeping sinks & cooking appliances off the island. That's fine if you have enough space in your kitchen. 😂🙏

Mine was a wooden square with dark marble top. I had it painted white & took granite off & quartz countertop on called minuet that looks like white with marbling. I elongated it on each end to form a rectangle but rounded on ends.
It matches regular cabinets & countertops.
Going to mop today & just roll to the side mop & roll back. Still loving it but wish it had brakes but it doesn’t. But is very heavy not prone to rolling away.

As always, excellent advice. I totally agree with you on not putting the sink or cooker on an island.1) mess in full view 2)only a top gives a great wide space for food prep, rolling pastry etc etc etc,as 60cm tops are usually cluttered with small electric appliances. 3)should you or future buyers rather have a kitchen table one day....

Great video! Just wanted to add, if you are putting a sink in the island don't forget about venting the drains. A beautiful sink centerpiece can become and embarrassment if it "Gluggs and gurgles" when in use. Thanks!!

I have an island with no sink or cooktop on it. I designed the kitchen that way but when I moved in the electric hob and down draft vent were totally in the middle of it. I think it’s very bad form having either on the island and yet it is still happening! Builders are not using good designers and in fact few designers even consider putting a window in the kitchen and a lot of kitchens are black holes requiring the lights on in there most days. I also think not many designers put electric sockets either side either.

The advantage of barstool-high seating, is that guests are closer in height to the chef as she cooks, which is less awkward than looking upwards to talk to her.

I don't know about having a cooktop at the island if it's a pro-style rangetop. The current advice generally is against using downdraft venting for pro-style ranges and pro-style rangetops -- especially at an island, due to the physics of dealing with air exchange (i.e., make-up air) and venting water vapor and smoke. For example, what about the capture of smoke from distant burners and the water vapor from any burner on the pro-style rangetop? Maybe the use of a downdraft unit for a consumer lower-output cooktop is doable but remains questionable for a pro-style rangetop that has a high output of BTUs.

Thank you for including measurements. Although downdraft exhaust systems look nice, I read they're not the most effective at removing odors, oil, and hot vapor from cooking. Nice aesthetic but functionality may not be the greatest.

Question please, I am building a home in Mexico. All my doors y windows will be black metal. My kitchen will be two toned, black lower cabinets, white upper shelves y cabinets. Focal point will be a black metal range hood ( idea from a previous video of yours, thank you). slate and stainless, faucet, appliances, white porcelain sink below a huge black metal window. My question is the color of the hardware, ? should I use the same color hardware for the black lower cabinets y white upper cabinets? next question, please, since the appliances and faucet are a cool toned stainless color, could I mix brass colored pulls? what is your advice? Last question, in the adjacent room will be a pantry / laundry area with medium toned grey cabinets, what color hardware would you suggest? All ceilings will be exposed brick mexican boveda style with black steel. I love your tutorials.

@designchickee How do you feel about a large island for dining at counter height rather than a dining table? Prep space is more important to our family of 4 than a dedicated eating space in our small to medium sized open kitchen/dining. We’re also more comfortable sitting at counter height. Is having only and island a mistake? It’d also open up opportunities for more much needed storage.

If you have the room, can you have a 54 " (4 1/2 ft) space between your wall countertop and the island?

Good thing I found this video, I'm planning to build one too. A question though, our home is just a rental apartment and their countertop is just 33 inches in height, but I wanted my kitchen island a bit taller than that, like 36". Can I make my kitchen island taller or do I need to follow the height of the countertop?
Your input is very much appreciated.
    Thank you!

Hi there... Might be a bit awkward to have a 3" difference between the perimeter and the island. I'd hate it if you hit the edge of your island with something hot in your hands. So I would try to keep it as close to the 33" height as possible. Maybe split the difference? 34.5"?

and dont forget -these ‘standards’ are for average MALE height not female. So lower it if you are getting a bespoke project

Hahaha she’s talking for a huge space. You can still put an island without her standards!

Sorry bud, but my world is construction and it is still, mostly, in imperial. Even here in Canada. FEET. INCHES. Thank you.

@@Designchickee You should (of most ppl) try to change it then! Is it easier to change inches to feet to yards to whatever...? I mean, what's the analogy? In contrast 1meter is 10 decimeters or 100cm or 1000mm! easy? Hell... Think about driving on the wrong side of the road... Wait, how do you drive in Canada?
