    Rentals were key in determining if a game was worth buying

      So true - I got Star Wars Masters of Teras Kasi for a birthday present asking for it having never had played it and I wish I would have rented it first cuz I played it once for 20 minutes and never played it again...I feel guilty about it to this day😣

      XBOX Game pass is is the closest to game rentals we can get right now.

    Though I grew up in the 90s I rarely had great experiences renting games. Any of the following were usual occurrences:
    1) the game I wanted to rent was never there
    2) renting was, relatively expensive, usually a 5th of the game’s retail cost, so not cheap
    3) people would keep rentals and pay the charge sometimes for older, hard to get, titles which led to not being able to find some titles
    4) i was not good at the game so I would not get far before I had to return it and, like I said, it was not cheap
    Nah. What I preferred more to renting was the used game market.

    The need for Day 1 patches and the long install times now make renting a game unfeasible... which is what developers wanted, because they thought we would buy the game just to try it for 10 minutes... the reality couldn't be more different

  • @jay5286
    @jay5286 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    I did not know till years later that the reason they made games a lot harder is so people will not beat the game right away and be forced to keep on renting the game oh what the Publishers really wanted you to do buy the game.

  • @jasons9812
    @jasons9812 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Was great for NES in the 80s, but as the SNES came out, the games started getting longer and longer. By the time ps came out, there was no way you could beat a game in weekend. By this time, it was almost more cost effective to just buy it and play when you could as opposed to keep doling out rental fees.

    • @mkedmusic
      @mkedmusic  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I know what you mean, I know there were several games I essentially could have just bought once I realized how many times I rented them just to beat the game

    Video Update, a movie rental chain, first opened its doors in 1983. It was a significant player in the video rental industry during the 1980s and 1990s before declining with the rise of digital streaming services and the closure of physical rental stores.

      I would rent Turtles IV Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in Time for SNES and I would beat the game in a weekend, wait a couple weekends, rent it again, beat it again, and repeat for who knows how long. I don't think I ever owned it, but I probably could have bought several copies at the rate I was renting it....

    I wasn't born until 1997, so most of this I don't personally remember. Even in the 2000s, we didn't really rent games in the same regularity as with movies. After the physical Blockbuster near me closed in April 2011, I still would use their by-mail service to rent video games, even if most of the time we would simply buy outright at that point. But even so, we would continue using their by-mail service until the same time of year in 2012. During that time, I would also occasionally borrow video games from a local library, even though it wasn't necessarily consistent. Though I haven't done it this way since the first quarter of 2014.

    I used to rent megaman x3 from a place called Don's video back in the 90s. I was obsessed with trying to beat the game. Once I finally beat it I felt a sense of relief. With Game Pass, PS+, and so on, you can only play the games available on their service. In a video store you can rent any game on the shelf, (as long as they weren't rented out lol). If Gamefly was a little cheaper I'd still be subscribed

If the product is good most ppl will buy it, it's like a demo. i went on to buy borderlands after renting it. im sure others bought the game after renting it. vg rentals will hold devs accountable, bc if it sux nobody will go out and buy them vs today where u r stuck with the game
