Why does the word "Geometry" by its word origin mean "measure Earth", when it is the study of shapes, figures, points, lines, and space in general?
because tangent lines are formed from planet earth
Think of a surveyor; he's measuring the Earth using a reference distance (the length of a chain, let's say) and a bunch of angles to find the distances to a bunch of other places.
