Before deciding which kilt is for you, you have to know how you will be wearing it. If you are going to be wearing compression shorts, athletic shorts or some other substantial underclothing, a five yard kilt is fine since it is essentially decorative. But when I wear my kilts, I always wear them commando and if I’m about to set out on a 5 hour hike I like something a little more substantial in a kilt since there is nothing between me and the world. So I usually wear an eight yard kilt. It is sturdier and less likely to blow up in a sudden gust of wind.

I just want to put this out there, I'm a big guy and a 5 yard kilt works fine. It's 5 yards long, it will wrap around anybody.
If you have back problems, then I don't recommend buying a heavy 8 yard kilt. Usakilts offers pv material, its typically lighter (and cheaper). I have a kilt made of cloth (because Texas, hot) and acrylic kilts too. They are a light fabric as well. Hope that helps

I wear a 5yrd kilt for casual occasions in summer because it is more confortable.

I like my 5yd kilt from USA Kilts more than my 4yd Newsome Box-pleated kilt.

I had to buy an extra half yard as I have wide hips. What a weight in eight and a half yards of medium weight material 😆

What about when it comes to great kilts?

I actually prefer a 5 yard kilt because it doesn't weigh as much. An 8 yard kilt can be a bit heavy and as was mentioned very few folks can tell the difference on sight.

I am 5ft 6, 30 inch waist and weigh 130lb. Would I be better with a 5 yard wool kilt, simply because of my small frame?

      Definitely.

I am 5'8" with a 32' waist . Probably weigh about 140 lbs. I have 7 yd ,5 yd and 4 yd kilts . They will all fit ! Depends what you want it for how often you are going to wear it and your budget . The 7 yd has better swing than a 5 yd but as they said , it is still a very good kilt . Also if you are living in a very hot climate the less material around the waist the cooler ( read less hot ) the kilt will be for that area of your body . With a 30" waist you will probably like me not have enough girth to hang 8 yds of material hence the 7 yds .

@@petergrossett6763 Ended up purchasing from Strathmore Woolen co they produce the cloth and had the tartan in stock kilts for more wanted extra to supply a tartan they did not stock, which meant in the end the difference in price was insignificant, also Strathmore included post (South Australia) in the price
