    The Steelers should have drafted pitt great Dan Marino in ‘82. Instead they passed as did all the other teams in the first round until Miami grabbed him. Unreal.

    Donnie Shell #31 of the Pittsburgh Steelers
    Career Accomplishments
    Undrafted free agent in 1974
    Pittsburgh Steelers (1974-87)
    5x Pro Bowl selection
    3x First-Team All-Pro selection
    1x Second-Team All-Pro selection
    4x Super Bowl Champion
    His 51 interceptions were the most ever for a strong safety when he retired.
    19 fumble recoveries
    Pro Football Hall of Fame selection
    Nicknamed "The Torpedo" due to his superior closing speed and eagerness to launch himself.
    Tony Dungy stated in his autobiography "Quiet Strength" that Shell was one of his closest friends on the team and a mentor on and off the field.
    While his stats match up with other great defensive backs in his or any era, numbers shouldn't define what made Shell unique. It was that fearlessness and effort that he played with on every snap. It was his peerless athleticism that enabled him to chase down the fastest of players. It was the leadership he displayed to his younger teammates, teaching them the Steeler Way of doing things.

      I certainly remember and he played his game years at the 'University of the Steel Curtain' defense. Any good football fan knows this was the way to build a Defense.

    Bills LB, Eugene Marve, delivered some tremendous hits during this game. Looks like Buffalo had a very tough bunch of defensive players.

      Yeah and the Pittsburgh Steelers got rid of there best linebacker Dennis dirt Winston sending him to the New Orleans Saints where he made the Pro-bowl in his first season with the Saints. The STEELERS again got rid of the best linebacker Dennis Dirt Winston#53.

    Bradshaw's passes had no zip, which really hurt him on a windy day. He actually hurt his elbow in training camp but some days were worse than others. This was clearly a bad day.

      Poor excuses he always threw interception, he threw them in that playoffs against the San Diego Chargers that may have cost the Steelers a 5th Superbowl that strike season. Losing to the San Diego Chargers at 3 river stadium 🏟️.

      @d0nKsTaH 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also a rumor going around that Terry was disgruntled with his contract (and strike) and took money from a bookie to throw this game.
      Same for the 16-0 Seattle game in the same year.
      That bookie wrote a book (didn't name Terry) but said MANY QB's in the late 70's and early 80's came to him because they needed cash
      Some of the players had their pay held until end of the season (the way some teams structured contracts) and it caused them to be a bit desperate

    The Bills were 4-2 after this win, before losing their last 3 to miss the silly "Super Bowl Tournament" that was held..

      As I recall growing up in Maryland there were 2 extremes in the Mid Atlantic, the Baltimore Colts, in what would eventually be the next to final season playing on West 33rd Street with the unusual kickoff time (2pm) for an NFL game on the east coast, went winless at 0-8-1 while down on East Capitol Street at RFK, the eventual Super Bowl XVII champion Washington Redskins went 8-1 in the strike shortened season. As for the teams in this game, The Steelers were still formidable but still in steady decline following their championship years in the 70's. As for Buffalo, they tapped into a pipeline from Clemson, SC to draft Perry Tuttle and Jerry Butler and trying to keep up with both the Jets and the Dolphins' "Killer B's" defense although the 1982 standings went by Conference instead of division

    • @fjr70
      @fjr70 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Silly?? I think the best team won the Super Bowl that year. It was Washington's year and they kept their dominance going until the next season's Super Bowl.
      We're actually getting pretty close to that tournament format with 7 teams from each conference going to the post season in '21.

      @@fjr70 I wouldn't be surprised if the NFL further expanded the playoffs in the future but with the new playoff format, being the top seed still has a slight edge

    • @stevep8445
      @stevep8445 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fjr70 This whole season was a joke, IMO. I don't watch much current football. It will be a matter of time before half the league is in the playoffs, but to me, at least they will have played a full season. Redskins had the best defense in football, but the Raiders (and maybe the Jets) would have beaten them in the Super Bowl. And it really was Joe Theismann that saved the Skins. If Kim Bokamper holds onto the interception as he is headed for a TD in the Super Bowl, Miami wins that game. Theismann made a great playing knocking it loose. Washington had a great defense but was average at best on offense, they had the good fortune of running into a team that was worse offensively in the Super Bowl. I wouldn't say the '82 Skins were dominant though. They won games by 3,4,5 and 1 point during the 9 game season. Riggins had a mediocre regular season but then turned in an epic run in the playoffs.I am a Miami fan and know they were not the best team in the AFC. If this season had gone the full 16, Miami would have been lucky to finish 10-6.
      But I don't put much stock in a 9 game season... At all . And naming Mark Moseley the MVP over Marcus Allen or Dan Fouts shows the absurdity of it all. This season is up there with the "Split season" format MLB did in 1981. At least MLB played ~66% of their games that year. I'm not naive, I know WHY these formats were adopted. ($$$). Had to give the fans a reason to follow once they resumed play.

    By the early 80s, the Steelers still had good moments but lost their dominant edge due to a combination of aging stars, not getting good players to replace them, and veterans just losing competitive fire.

    Chuck Noll did a terrible coaching job in the 1980 and got rid of all the talented black players with his terrible Quarterbacks as well, this is why he and Don Shula would never win another Superbowl after 1979 and Don Shula had Dan Marino and still couldn't win a Superbowl in the 1980s and 90s.
