Let's differentiate a script from a Language. What we are learning here is script Devanagari used to write many languages other than Hindi. When you learn Devanagari you can read Hindi, Nepali, Marathi, Konkani, Sanskrit. if you do not believe take a rupee note out of your pocket. Read the many Indian languages written on it. you will find this script many times but those all are different languages. Moreover, Gujrati, Gurmukhi, Bangla scripts are very close to Devanagri. Though all these languages are different from Hindi. Hindi, like most other languages, used to be written in different script till about 1500 years ago. Then many languages moved to the modern script Devanagiri. Marathi and Konkani at latest additions only after independence. Now all the Marathi texts are available in Devanagri (no change in the language though).
