We beg to differ! Whilst it predominately offers video game interaction for the end user, its core promotional framework creates a perfect adhesion between entertainment, consumer reward, product marketing and data capture - thats why it works so well.

Gamification means to apply game situations/elements to something that is not normally a game. So I agree that Monopoly is already a game, and you can't gamify a game. BUT eating McDonalds food is not normally a game - so adding game elements (i.e. Monopoly) to encourage people to order more and visit more often IS Gamification (i.e. using a game to motivate people to do something not related to the game itself. Since the McDonald's game goes back to the 1980s it might be the first national level examples of gamification applied to business/marketing.
