    This blew my mind. I'm JUST out of the gate as a new VO, I can't imagine how much time this will save me. Much appreciation! (Also, great inserted lesson on Hysteresis!)

    Thanks for making this video! I'm actually jumping from Audacity to Reaper and glad I found this video

    Amazing video! I run a small team of podcast editors/audio engineers and we use Reaper because of the possibility of using actions, but I see some really interesting things hear, you are amazing at this. Keep this videos I’m sure a lot of people are interested in VO gigs and careers. Thanks!

    Hey! The settings for "5" at 5:20 helped me to start googling and figuring out that there is a free "SWS/S&M" extension pack for Reaper I needed to get! So, anyone else wondering, just google that quoted text and download the one you need and install (you will have to close Reaper to install it).

    Video uses 48kHz as their sample rate. Best to export accordingly if recording is for a video project. Radio is typically 44.1.

    Thank you for all your tips. Instead of a dog clicker, I just snap my fingers: the sound is quite similar to that of the dog clicker, if you manage to snap properly the fingers, and the visual result on the wave is also very distinctive.

    I'm new to narration, but experienced in tracking and mixing music with Reaper. I like the custom actions you made! And finally I understood what ripple editing is good for.....
    I think I would have considered adding a de-esser in the effects chain (there's several freebees to be found on the internet and they'll do the job well enough, or you could use the free version of TDR Nova, an excellent dynamic EQ, but that takes a bit more experience to set up). And maybe a limiter on the mixbus before rendering?

      Yeah, I have changed so much of my workflow since making this video. It is crazy how much can change in a few months. I bought RX8 Standard a few weeks ago, which has a decent de-esser. I need to try out the one that came with Reaper. It looks pretty simple.

    Great video, this helped a lot.
    I would love it if you did a video on your FX because I enjoy your presentation style.
    There are many resources covering this already though so I understand the redundancy.
    Thank You for the video and information!

    Hi! 3:49 The silence custom action doesn't seem to work. The yellow line jumps to the area and begins playing it, the selection doesn't clear, and then it just plays that selection over and over again. I've made sure that the filter list is in order.

    2 things: one of the things that bothered me with both junkies custom action, and that happens here as well, is that crossfades don't apply to the 2 new created itms. i thought this needed to be done manually after the fact, but i guess you don't do it at all? does it not matter?
    regarding normalizing, isn't the sws extension useless for it, since the 6.3 update?
    btw, thank you for actually using a script of interest of the natural viewers for this video. way too interesting and have to start using hysteresis myself

    • @randyvirdenvo6361
      @randyvirdenvo6361  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it does apply crossfades, but they are only 10 ms, so they are really small and don't show up visually. I have since changed that to default to 50 ms, which shows up more, and sounds better, I think. To be honest, I stopped using this normalizing trick since then. I have started using the threshold on the limiter to raise the volume, and a loudness meter to check my volume before rendering. I should really do an update for this video. Yeah, hysteresis is great. Here is the final video for that script I was recording here: th-cam.com/video/umPfbhOhPHo/w-d-xo.html

    Tried but failed. How to do the ripple [R], but without the need to select a range ?
    Just click R and then cut at the cursor and delete everything behind (of the current track, not if there are other pieces of tracks behind)

    Great tips! I just have one configuration doubt/problem that would help me A LOT if any of you had the answer: when I use time selection, "the green triangle line thingy" doesn't adjust along with the time selection! How do I set him to do so?! PLEASE HELP ME!!! I have an audiobook to edit and it`s taking me forever!!! Thank you, guys!!!

    • @randyvirdenvo6361
      @randyvirdenvo6361  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I might be able to help. The green triangle with the line is called the "edit cursor." You can make the edit cursor go to the start of your time selection every time you make one. Go to the Options menu, then click Preferences. In the Preferences box, click on "Editing Behavior," and check the first box that says "move edit cursor to start of time selection on time selection change." Try that and let me know if that solves the problem.

    Audacity - DEL to delete selection gathering edges automatically; ctrl+L - fill with silence 😉 I've started Reaper today after 3 years on Audacity. This "loudness" problem in Reaper makes me frustrated. To open your saved file to operate with loudness "because it will affect gate or other FX in original record" makes me so sad about reaper, because in audacity you can normalise and work with the result immediatelly.

    • @randyvirdenvo6361
      @randyvirdenvo6361  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically, you can do that here as well, turning it up after applying the gate. The limiter I use has a threshold option that will increase volume. As long as it is after the gate in the chain, it will not affect the chain.

      @@fibromyalgiajourney-denisebowe I think Reaper can do alot more than Audacity, but I still prefer and use Audacity. It's just more simple for me, and at this time I don't need to do anything too complex and technical like I would with Reaper.

    not sure if you remain on same -23 LUFS if you do limiting afterwards?

    • @randyvirdenvo6361
      @randyvirdenvo6361  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You do not, technically. I use the limiter just because a few of my clients want the max to be -3dbs, but I like the average "loudness" of -23 LUFS. It usually does not sound much more compressed with the limiter, but it still meets the specifications for places like ACX and Findaway voices.

    The $60 license is only for personal and low-end (beginner) commercial work. Once you start making $20k/per year, you are supposed to get the $295 license.

    Hi Randy I am a VO ( I also use a Dog Clicker) & trying out Reaper, your help is invaluable as All other YT Reaper Tutorials are excellent but geared more towards Music Production I'm trying to ditch Audition as its costly!!
    But this tutorial is what I need to edit out silent portions & seamlessly join etc But unfortunately your screen is Not sharp enough! ( it's a bit out of focus unfortunately) for me to see what your doing in the actions drop down & your going a little fast for me .I wish I could speak in person to have a walk through if you had the Time !!
    I could phone you if you did ! LOL I have subscribed & will keep going over this tutorial to see If I can Master It !!
    Thanks for the work to help other V/O's as I'm Finding Reaper to be well Liked But Not at all intuitive !!! And hard work to achieve what should be easy !
    Regards John www.thevoice.wales
