Metallica | Cliff Burton | Jason Newsted
It's such a shame too cause that tone is absolutely badass.
For real tho it’s probably their best bass tone 😢
@@WublerDublerCubler I personally prefer the tone Jason had on the Black Album, but damn if his Justice tone doesn't kick ass too
5 string wal through SVT is a great setup for sure. He’s such a good player but he can’t write very good basslines for riffs
@@kylebrady969My favorite Jason bass tone is on the Garage Days EP.
Absolutely! His tone, as well as his overally style and stage presence, are incredible! He may not have Cliff's or Rob's mastery, but he more than makes up in his own way with his amazing stage presence and sheer playing aggression
Justice is ultimately a huge piece of art. They lost Cliff. They made a gigantic album. They left out the bass that should have been there. It is tragic and beautiful in a sense. But Jason didn't deserve that. Edit: Bob Rock definitely does for the follow up effort. There. Is that better?
it was lars n’ james who got rid of the bass. bob wanted it in
@@boofed9910bob didn't even work on justice what are you two talking about 😭
@@mr.iiconicyeah… it was Flemming Rasmussen, who worked on …and justice for all, bob rock worked on the black album.
Do your research before making a comment like that. Bob Rock had nothing to do with Justice.
Don’t you mean bob rock on the st anger album where he played the bass
In 2009, Hetfield said he didn't want Newsted's sound to clash with his so it was "turn it down until you can barely hear it, then turn it down some more". Ten years later he backtracked and used their damaged hearing an excuse.
The biggest tragedy was that they didn't bump it back up in the mix for the remastered release. Most fans would probably agree that we want an AJFA album with the bass where it should be.
Which are such a dumb excuses because they already had 3 albums under their belt and already knew their fully mixed guitar tone is partially comprised of frequencies from the bass AND what a good final full mix sounds like. That’s part of what a producer does and they’ve always worked with one. James’ tone would’ve been competing with the bass more than anything and in that case you just…turn or eq the bass down on your guitar. Justice came out 36 years ago and these guys still can’t give an honest, straightforward answer about what happened. It’s ridiculous how they still give these silly excuses.
I like Metallica's music, but every issue they had always came down to James being a gigantic asshole.
Actually, it wasn't James; it was Lars! Bob Rock asked James, and James surrendered and said, "Lars is the boss!"
@@garycox9341bob rock didnt work with them in 1988
@@4md17 I stand corrected. Who was the producer?
That last one was too funny
?
@@Crostons_fourin the previous video, he sets Master to 0 and (of course) the rest of the video is completely silent
@@joshuarose4274 why does he kot comment it on there then? 😭
I believe Half of the tone itself comes from how Hard you hit the strings
And having fresh string. My old strings will never sound like that, but thats ok i don't like this sound
Yep, hard picking and fresh as hell strings and a bit of saturation. It's a simple recipe and I love it haha.
Nobody tell Lars for God's sake.
Despite all the hate Jason got from Metallica, his bass skills were amazing & Metallica likely wouldn't be who they are today without him.
Honestly best metallica is with Jason. They were easily the best live band through the 90s and 2000s
And let's not forget that Jason is the reason we have Blackened, one of the greatest bangers in metal history
And he was a monster live.
Yes they would. They amassed a huge following by word of mouth. They were destined to be huge. Do some research before you speak
Now this is just sad but true
Jason Newsteads bass tone has been my go to since I first heard what we all missed from And Justice for All. It sounds so good. Lots of bite and intensity
SUCH a great picture of him!!!

Jason newsted is my favourite bassist
Milo, Russ, Andy, Enzo and Paul. I owe my career to those lads. Great band. Way before their time.
Man finally used round wounds
Respect for Slammer t-shirt🤘
people always say metallica turned down the bass when jason joined but it was never really there to begin with. the only time you ever heard cliff was when he had a solo.
he was very present in kill em all, at least to my ears. but yeah you really cant hear him much in lighting or puppets.
Maybe so. But no matter where the bass is, the people playing it used it for its rhythm and then removed it. It is clever. If they would record with no bass at all, I'd be inclined to believe it
This is just false. In the first three records you can hear the bass well
nah, you can hear Cliff crystal clear.
Wtf I can hear it perfectly on my shitty phone speaker lmao sometimes even louder than the guitars
Can you do one for David ellfson
One of my favourite bass tones, its just perfect it's a shame we never got to hear it in the context of the mix as much as i do like the sound of that album already
Sweet shirt man! Tenement Zone is a class British thrash album 😎
the album is called the work of idle hands
@@phehehe6639 oh shit yeah, i think i was pissed at the time of commenting. Thanks for clearing that bud
Sick Slammer shirt! I need one!
You can't dwell on what was. Jason without a doubt was a monster, but Robert T. He's a monster's monster. Check out his time and tracks with ST. Absolutely unreal!!
Jason described his EQ settings as a smiley face to fill in where tye guitars were scooped, but maybe that came later.
I wish young men of today could experience the 80’s early 90’s with all the heavy rock metal bands out releasing records every mo th of year then same things two years later. Every month 2 or 3 bands would release a album, lots of fun. The record stores, waiting in li e for concert tickets
Awesome shirt! had the luck to get to see them last year in Glasgow
Nice bro, newsteads a beast
Meaty tone
The crazy thing about Jason’s playing on this album is how good he makes everyone else sound. Listening to Justice for Jason, it makes a dramatic difference. His bass gives the life that record needed. He adds so much meat to Lars’ drums, he backs up James and Kirk so damn well. I know James has said that he would get frustrated with Jason for just following the guitar and wanted him to do something different like Cliff would, but most of the time you can barely hear what cliff is doing anyway since he’s so buried in the mix. Jason made all of them sound better. I’m so glad he’s been getting the love he deserves.
Ik why they did it. Some of the tracks like blackened and one benifited from the mixes and at the time they weremt exactly ready to just bring anyone in to replace cliff. Its possible they wanted you the listener to understand what the band is without cliff. That emptiness gives justice to cliff, it recognizes hes gone. I hope they remix it and add the bass back to some tracks though.
They came up with that much later. It was apparently to benefit larss drum sound.
@theearthisflat21 how? If his drumming wasn't good it would've sounded worse. Also I'm pretty sure James also is partly to blame, they elevated the vocals and guitar too over the bass.
The Slammer shirt tho!
Day 1 of asking for Necrobutcher's bass tone
Slammer shirt. The work of idle hands is a criminally underrated thrash album
THANK YOU!!! 😊
Try Lemmys bass tone
Jason was twice the bassist Cliff was, Cliff could solo sure but holding the low end down and actually playing complex basslines like a bass player should. Listen to Jason’s audition, he runs circles around all of cliffs basslines
what bass is that?
Looks like a chowny NT4
Behs*
The stringed one
And justice for all
Respect for the Slammer shirt... what a great band
It would be perfect if you turned the blend knob ont the BEHS a little bit to the mid pickup, mate. Cheers!
God, Wal basses sound so good
Gotta love that BEHS tone.
John Entwistle
They good and all but I wish cliff was still around he was by far my favorite😭😔
Shit, that actually sounds really good! Maybe one day we'll get justice for And Justice For All
That was fairly close. Need some growls to seal the deal😂
Newstead was my favorite Metallica bassist by far. Best tone, killer parts, fantastic stage presence, and backup screams and vocals to top it all off.
Wow bro, thanks for the lost bass tone! Btw what bass are u using?
Thanks! Chowny NT4
Slammer! God I remember them😮
Where does one find a Chowny behss
You need a ampeg svt for the right behs sound
I've never understood playing metal with a thick pick. I find it's way easier to play fast with a thin pick. I guess the only disadvantage is if you want to dig in. But I prefer to play with a super light touch.
Can you do a short about how we can have Marcus Miller tone ? Please
Thank you
It’s such a shame because if you pull up Jason’s isolated recordings he played his ass off. Awesome tone, great attack, and sick playing. He wasn’t trying to copy Cliff but just play the songs his way. Lars is and will forever be a complete tool.
Id say blend in the neck pickup just a little more to take some of the shrill bridge pickup out a tad. Otherwise great!
Can you do Rob Trujillo bass tone next? I like his tone but not a lot people really cover how to get his tone
Warwicks have a very distinct sound, I would start by that
With my bass i don't really mess with the amp settings but with the bass itself. My bass has 2 volume and 2 tone knobs for each of the pickups but what i do is just turn all of dose 4 knobs all the way and it gives me the jason tone its pretty good you should try it.
You are right bro. That is why i heard those songs where jason tone added only 😢😢😢
I used to work for SLAMMER!!!!!! The Work Of Idle Hands!
a bit less Bass, and a bit more Mids... there you go (more like, 4, 5 and 7)
Commenting so I don't forget
The EQ in the video was correct. Jason’s settings were the same as guitar, and that is partially the reason why it didn’t fit as good into the mix. The mids were scooped.
@@stereowired Nah, Jason knew the bass had to have mids boosted to fit in with the mid cut guitars
@@killernazrat nah it ain’t like that with frequency
I’ve tried it before and experimented and what I found was that the guitar’s mids were essentially the high part of the bass, and it fits together like a jigsaw puzzle
It was likely mixed in well anyway before James and Lars turned him down. It wasn’t cause he was interfering, but rather because of their relationship with Newsted and them being burnt out from the chaos of touring without time to grieve.
@@stereowired You basically just said what I said, Jasons bass filled in the frequencies that were cut from James guitar
I always thought that album sounded so heavy. I would have never thought the drums and bass were on the same level
Props for the Slammer shirt
I was NEVER LOST just got BURIED in thefing mix. Maybe SOME DAY we will be a proper offical remix..
I’m assuming you’re a Prince fan like me please do a Prince or Sonny T bass video O(+>
The original tone sounds like a Jazz bass. Cool!
He breached the multiverses to find that bass multitrack 😅😂
Metallica Even Said They Treated Jason Like Shit Go Figure Right After The Death Of Cliff Burton
It's such a shame because that tone CRUSHES!
You should do rise against next
What I find ridiculous is that Jason Played a Wal. He went out of his way to break his back in procuring a Wal just so Lars can keep him on mute. I wish it was Lars taking that nap and not Cliff.
That would be really interesting to see how things would play out if Lars was gone instead of Cliff.
Right? The one album he recorded entirely with a Wal. All of that Wal tone, wasted
“Let’s hear the man himself”
What’s the source of that sound bit please?
Because my understanding was that the AJFA isolated tracks absolutely do NOT exist. Which is also exactly why Metallica themselves have never released a remixed version.
I could be wrong. But I recall hearing this fact in an interview with either the actual producer or engineer on the record.
As much as i love what youre doing, its next to impossible to guage bass tone on phones. You can only hear the upper mid and high frequencies well enough because phone speakers are too small to give you the low end.
Now I understand why they muted him
98 metal is the best 👌 🙌
Very close, nice job mate!
'....And Justice For Jason' TH-cam video, the way the album SHOULD have sounded.
Thought he was gonna say for amp settings set volume at zero.
He did, in the previous video.
Nice t shirt dude! Adam from Slammer 🤘🤘🤘🤘
_... And Jasonstice 4 Newsted!_
Jason with the Ramones shirt ❤
Dude, you are Rick Moranis' doppelganger! 😊
David J of Bauhaus and Love and Rockerts Behs tone, please.
I wish they would rerelease the album with audible bass
Jason is a bassist!! Fret buzz helps too. Lol. For years I thought Metallica bass players had a curse. Jason is a great bassist
…And Justice For All is just a huge bass backing track.
That was the 90s "scooped" sound. Guitar amps, stereo eq's. We all scooped in the 90s. Not bad ass. More like 90s!
VERY NICE
not a fan of it .. i dont' like scooped mids . it makes the bass easily buried in the mix even when you don't have an a-hole drummer turning you down. the best sound over all is when you mix the guitar(s) mid-high (rythum to mid , and lead to higher), then the bass low mid , adn the drums which ahs a kick drum is the lowest because well it's a damn kick drum you don't want teh bass too low for this reason it'll get over peaked by the kick drum making notes dissapear in the mix . bassically this is how i think you should set up :
Lead: Bass -4 , mid-6 , trebble - 8-9ish
rythum: Bass-5, mid - 7 to 8, Trebble- 6
Bass: Bass - 8ish, mid-7 -trebble - 6 or 7 if you want more brightness
then if you got drums mic-ed to a PA it's seting should be as follows
Mic 1-Kick: Bass-6, mid-5 trebble -5
Mic 2- hanging toms smaller: bass- 4-5ish, mid-5, - treb-6
Mic3-hanging toms larger: B-6, mid 7 , Treb-5
mic 4 floor tom - bass-6 mid-6 . treb-5
mic 5 Snare: bass 5, mid-6 or 7 , treb-5
mic 6-7 cymbals : b, m , and tr all 5
keep in mind when doing any set up 12 o'clock should always be your base starting postion before adjusting (that's 5 for those of you too young to know your cloc positions)
adn nto for teh msot part you don't want toa dd much to teh various drums at all , waht you want is to capture the drum's natural sound as much as psosible which means dicking around witha setting only when the nature of captured sound (ie micing them) alters that sound to not be like it is when you just hear thedrum or cymbal played.
Still waiting for Mic Todd's bass tone from Coheed and Cambria
Jason 💪
Totally expected the exact same thing as before
Rip cliff
And justice for all... but Jason
Now that sounds good and cool. Know whats also cool? Mike Starr's tone from O.G Alice in Chains🤪
Luv the slammer shirt
Nice slammer shirt :DDD
Do a micheal Anthony solo. I never heard a sound like that
J O O S T I C E
Jason did get, if not justice, respect when he worked with Voivod. He was aksed by Piggy, who was very ill, to assist as not only a bassist but also a songwriter. Something Metallica was dismissive about Jason doing.
Can you do Alex Webster? Specifially from The Bleeding album? That is the sickest bass tone ever
The band treated him like shit the whole time he was in Metallica. I hope he made a ton of money and whatever he's doing now l hope he's happy
I ❤ the bess
