    I run Enkei rpf1 16x8 +38 with 25mm spacers on my NA now +13, I used to run Toyo 245/35r16, unfortunately no longer available. I now run Yokohama S.drive 215/40r16. I like them for street tires, I like how they don't look stretched on 16x8's. The Yokohama's are close in fitment to the previous 245/35r16, the tires are on the wider side of what they claim as 215. You may want to consider them as your next set of tires.

    So many fitments throw scrub radius out the window, not worried about how it looks personally.At stock power swapping my all seasons for summer tires on the light 14 inch factory rims will probably amaze me. I only intend to advance ignition and cam timing and a 4-2-1 header for now and eventually do the exhintake cam swap. Need more miata's before I stray too far with this one.

    Awesome video. One of the best explanations of + and - offset 8¬D . Totally agree with your opinion of 'slammed' sports cars. Functionality and drive-ability wins every time (ricers will hate me for saying that 8¬\) - as long as it lowered and doesn't roll in the corners of course. Still preferred the NB on the 14" RPF1's that you had. Maybe the bigger rims are better for drifting(?). Keep up the great videos, really enjoying your content (especially MX5/Miata stuff).

      They will stick out about 14/15mm less than this setup. FWIW, this setup is too aggressive so I have since removed the spacers. I think sticking them out an extra 10mm would be the sweet spot. Going to redo the hubs this winter with ARP hardware and just run slip on spacers.

    Have you ever tested the car with and without spacers at the track? What setup would be faster, laptime-wise only?

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well seeing that I literally just put them on, no lol. However I will say that when I ran Spec Miata, 15x7 +38 wheels vs 15x7 +30, my laptimes were on average .1 to .3 seconds faster on a roughly 1 min 30 second track. How much of that was due to the offset I'm not sure. When +25 offset wheels were allowed, people said they were slower than the +30 offset wheels, but it is so hard to measure something like that and attribute it solely to the offset change.

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The wheels were square on the AP2, but tires were staggered 245 R 225 F. I really liked that combo on it, but the car was definitely really loose. My Ap1 is staggered wheels and tires 8.5 w/ 245 and 7.5 w/225. If I can find another set of 8.5's, I'd consider throwing them on the fronts to mimic the AP2s setup.

    Hey Quinn, be prepared to roll those fenders. The fitment looks similar to what I have on my NA Miata and I ended up having to roll the fender. It wasn't too bad with the rub, but it would've eventually destroyed the tire.

      It will essentially make the offset a 22mm on the 7.5, which the 9 with a 20mm offset will still stick out farther because it's 1.5 inches wider, essentially adding an extra .75" to both the inside and outside of the wheel.

    No mention of scrub radius, motion ratio or extra hub stress??
    If you reduce your wheel offset you increase your scrub radius, which generally isn't good. Manufacturers go to a lot of trouble to keep the scrub radius to a minimum. That's why factory rims have positive offset. Negative offset changes your steering geometry in such a way that uneven traction (like hitting a puddle on one side) will pull the steering wheel towards the side with more drag. This can also affect stability under braking.
    And moving the wheel outwards will give your suspension arms more leverage over the springs, which is equivalent to having softer springs. Not to mention the fact that it puts more stress on the wheel bearings and will wear them out faster.
    And I'm not sure about the states, but in Australia wheel spacers are illegal. If you have a crash on the street with wheel spacers on your insurance company won't pay out because the car's illegally modified.

  • @miclewis55
    @miclewis55 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You really need to explain to your viewers the effects on suspension geometry that occur when you make such dramatic alterations to wheel width and offset.
    A bad scrub radius will cause dangerous instability under braking and will probably cause the car to be ‘sucked’ into puddles. A twitchy car is a slow car.

    • @TheSlipAngle
      @TheSlipAngle  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is not really that dramatic of a change for scrub radius and certainly doesn't make the car twitchy. I run 15x9 +10 wheels on my turbo NA Miata and that car is maybe slightly more nervous with that extreme of a setup but still very capable. I held the track record for Lime Rock Park's auto X course for a while with that setup on 225 wide tires.
