Nice video Chris. Nothing like turning a neglected plant into a beautiful bonsai.
Nice to hear your thought process as you pruned up this tree.

Excellent video and one of the better I’ve seen for root pruning.

Lovely video, I have just moved to the safety tread from the sanicat, I add a bit of pine bark to mine to hold a bit more water.

Thanks Mark. I've just done the same although I bought the larger bark and had to sit for ages cutting it in to smaller pieces.. 😂 not fun..

I always enjoy your videos mate. Lots of information about the species, your thoughts and great music. Nice work 👍🌳

I was amazded just how good the roots were on that once you had finished pruning. I had two or three I picked up a few years ago and there was practically nothing left once I had finished! I have had 100% success rate with cuttings taken last May :) Good to see you using the different clay particles. I have been considering it once/if Kitty Friend becomes unobtainable. Cheers

To be honest Xavier I was surprised by the amount and how good they looked considering how neglected it was at the garden centre..
The new soil is a lot smaller in size but so far I'm having good results in upper growth, I'll find out the roots in 2 years 😅.
Sounds like cuttings take well then. I'll have to have a go in the early summer. You should do a vid showing how to and when 👍🏻

@@bonsaiexpression I think I did put one out when i did my pruning last May. I am doing an update on the progress at some point. So busy with everything - too many ideas and not enough time :)

Nice work on a wonderful species. Wish I could find one at a nursery that wasn’t grafted. Thanks, keep growing

Thanks Matt. I also picked one up from a nursery that was grafted and did a video on it. It was more about asking for advice than working on it. But I will be revisiting that tree this year to see if I can do anything with it and if they might be worth buying. You might be interested in it, I took cuttings from it too and they were successful so that could be an option for you too.

So did it survive? Incredible how long the roots get in such small pots. And I didn't know that it is possible to remove all the soil inbetween ginkgo roots. I'll try that next time mine needs a repotting, great video💪

    • @bonsaiexpression
      @bonsaiexpression  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey christen, yes it survived and is doing Great, I think I show how well in one of my later videos. It's either the July updates vid or on the grafted Gingko. Can't remember which 😂.
Give it a go . Good luck . Thanks for checking out the vid.

wonder what name the safety tread is sold here in the US as? looks way more like acadama then the safe t zorb (think that nigel usesd that in his mix).same thing i buy. safe t zorb is 8$ for 33 or 35lb bags(they were 40lbs for 6$ last year lol). works for all types of my plantings from my bonsai to my hydroponics garden and even my house plants and flowers and veggies too.i adjust the mix per the plants needs. great start to a ginko bonsai you got here

It seems to be working well so far. I've mixed it with the other bag of kitty litter I have, some pine bark and some fine spagnum moss cut up with scissors. The kitty litter has bigger lumps and the safety t zord is small, so is fantastic so far, the trees are pushing growth and are healthy. Which means healthy roots too.
It's good knowing people out there are experimenting with different souls and getting good results 😁 .
I'm excited to see the ginkgo grow this year 👍🏻
