Excellent points by Bobby Gossai Jr. I wish he’d spoken more about the planned sovereign wealth fund. Also, I’d be curious to know more about Guyana’s energy infrastructure needs (can it use its natural gas for domestic production), planned increases to Guyana’s defense spending, and reserves being found off the coast of Suriname.

Guayana gets way more benefits from oil companies than just half the oil reserves. It's probably one of the best deal made for the Economy/Development and well worth every drop of oil.

Mr Gossai making some very good points. UAE I don't see Guyana becoming that just on the colonial history and some leader mark on that country in its history. End up more like Equatorial Guinea, Angola or Ghana oil industry. There could be problems with Venezuela down the road. But let's see if Guyana can become even like Kuwait or Qatar in 10 years. Bless

Looking forward to see how Guyana steps up their game to keep up with this. The street scenes & local news are not encouraging, how does one inspire citizens to develop their professional advanced accountancy, physics, and petroleum engineering skills? The good news seems to be the government so far seems to be prudent and are taking their time to consider the steep path forward.

I am concerned about the bullying by Exxon Mobil to have Guyana rushed to sign contracts. The same tactics was used with the previous administration. Hence, forcing Raphael Trotman to sign away our wealth. I am hoping that our new president Mr. Irfan Ali and mr Jagdeo don't be bullied to sign payara contract and make the same mistake of the previous administration. Take all the time you need and make the right decision for all Guyanese . I am confident that you guys can get the job done please be fair, transparent , honest, and just for all guyanese.

Great points made but pegging royalties on a sliding scale and especially based on oil price is a bad idea. The price of oil can can fluctuate wisely and you can have long periods of down turn which is not great for a developing country such as Guyana that benefits best from steady income to service it's debts.

No body is asking how a country with only 700,000, with a lack of experience in almost every knowledge and infrastructure sector things is going to manage this oil, and the the expertise and infrastructure needed.
The most basic of anything they cant due properly because anyone with a bit of knowledge left the country.
    An example.
the government built a stadium (Durban stadium?) for the 50th year independence. You should of seen the state of that so called stadium. It was already falling apart before it was finished building for the big Independence day.
And it was a local guy that knew nothing about construction that was making the video and showing us.
This is what will be happening. they will need to import a top of people with expertise or else they will be robbed severely.

  • @sandydeen5321

To dismiss considerations for provisions based on birthright as quickly as he did shows he may need more education on the definition of Guyanese people. Those that left didn’t just leave their country. Some were escaping or sold a further dream from the already established world powers of the time. The Guyana that he will now reap the benefits of was built, fought for and continues to exist on the backs of all of those before him.
Consider especially the remaining elderly from the Diaspora. I believe to move forward correctly is to start by ensuring our history is taken care of first. You can’t ask them to come back and earn their oil money by contributing now. Some of them already contributed a lifetime or generations to the Guyana that is now rewarding you Bobbi. (You who also left and came back. Some did not get the opportunity to come back to their home.) They earned for you what you are receiving now. There is also an immediate need behind her question. A need, not greed.
As most global powers are great at doing, they free you from one country and invite you to their other country with new dreams. Then they give you just a bit more than you had in your former home, so they can continue to use you as labor in your new one as long as they keep most of you below the poverty level and can discriminate on you and your kids at will. The diaspora needs medical care, especially the elderly, mental health care, education on our history, addiction and trauma treatment and resources to rise above poverty are all needed too.
You can more than afford to renegotiate for all of your people with oil billions. If you do right by them, guaranteed how quickly their children will take all that they have learned and earned abroad to pour it right back into the country of their mothers and fathers.
What does $5000 in a bank account do? In the midst of a global pandemic, losing your job in New York City as a 55 year old Guyanese person with a family. What will $5000 do? If you have to ask sir, you are taking your allocation advice from those who still have consistent poor and needy because they never actually ask the poor and needy what they think will help and try that instead. Instead, take your advice from non-poor who are great at building projection charts and statistics that never say the truth which is the greedy (usually those in power) need the poor. Without the poor, the ones in power lose their power. Do right by the people and this country. Be different. Be better. Do better. There is a far greater ROI when the value gained is a return of actual values.
But hey as long as Exxon has enough 😂

The government of Guyana should promptly get a precise population count, including names and addresses. Once this is done, checking accounts should be established for each of these citizens under each citizen's name and address at the national bank branch or other designated bank operating legally in Guyana as a commercial bank. Such banking institutions should always be investigated as a sound, qualified banking institution. Each of the found and accounted for citizens would have a debit card provided to the found and verified citizen. Such citizens would be designated as 'legacy citizens.' It is to these legacy citizens that portion of the oil royalty money be freely provided as a 'sub-royalty.' The oil royalty portion which would be provided to 'the people' of Guyana would be exclusively provided to these 'legacy citizens.' If the population of Guyana was 800,000, then a sum of $1000 per legacy citizen would be $800M per annum. This sum should be tax free, as it represents a birthright inheritance. The sub-royalty payment would be similar to the $1000/year the State of Alaska pays its citizens. The payment to the legacy citizens would be good for Guyana, as it would put money into the hands of the citizens to spend for goods and services in Guyana. The turnover rate of money would be healthy for the domestic economy. It rewards its people by the provision of a sub-royalty, increasing their loyalty and sense of being a united people. It would be a shame if a few Guyana insiders finagled the royalty payments into immense personal wealth, while the great mass of people remained poor. That has been the unfortunate model for South America and much of the world. The 'legacy citizen' idea is to help create a solid middle class level of lifestyle, which is the standard for a prosperous economy. Not every 'legacy citizen' will use his/her money wisely, but some will. It is they who will help to build a solid middle economy separate from the oil drilling business. Since oil booms bring many people from other lands, I do not included them in the 'legacy citizen' category, although some may help the Guyana economy. Already one sees among the leadership of Guyana the emergence of greed and vanity, as they describe current plans regarding the oil drilling and subsequent royalties. If events go as they typically do, these leaders will never find an amount of money that they don't consider too generous for the people. They will develop a plan which suits the people. That plan is usually 'nothing for the people,' grabbing it all for themselves.

A true sovereign wealth fund, is the best plan proven by Norway, enshrined by law that “All income from natural minerals ” is invested into a managed fund and the profit from the fund after any inflation is accounted for is then allowed to be spent by the Government.
This can still benefit the Guyana immediately buy borrowing against the anticipated level of income.
Infrastructure projects in renewable energy should be a priority to offset Co2 Emissions and to ensure electricity is available for all.
Road & Rail interconnecting the countries population allowing education and work centres to be accessible for all.
Then education should be focused on re-training adults and offering more comprehensive schools allowing everyone the opportunities from the increase in skilled work and the population to be given back wealth from the country’s win fall and a brighter future for the young.
For government contracts you offer a tax incentive for companies who meet the quality and budget targets of the project and ensure 3rd party inspections are conducted by pre-determined companies of excellence outside of Guyana, this prevents corruption as companies of excellence would not wish to harm their global brand and the wealth to the company doing the project only comes after the project is completed and if its completed correctly and offers no local inspections the opportunities for corruption.
The government should also ensures all bidding for government projects is overseen by out of country inspectors who offer the government a report for them to choose from, this helps negate corruption and offers true transparency with the population.

And they are just trying to reclaim their land, the boundary in South America North America Africa and other places around the world were created by European colonizers so I do not see Venezuela having any legitimate claim over Guyanese territory if anything like that should have happened maybe Spain should make that objection or claim. 😂
