    If I did not look carefully I would have thought this was a town somewhere in South Sussex, England in high summer. It looks a nice place.

      Ha ha. I have never been to South Sussex yet but the English did settle here more than 200 years ago so they must have designed so many things almost exactly the same....... :)

    @tomedwards81 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Very interesting, thank you. Some commentary or even a few words appearing on the screen would have been nice for someone like me who’s thinking of moving to Launceston. I noticed there seems to be quite a busy city centre with plenty of shops and cafes and people milling about. Is that due to the lack of an out of town shopping mall? Where I live in Townsville there are three malls that have sucked the life out of the city centre. About a quarter or maybe a third of the shops in the main street are empty and it feels like a ghost town without a soul. Has Launceston got a heart?

    • @MrHelidude
      @MrHelidude  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you ...... (っ◕‿◕)っ
      Launceston does not have any multi storey malls so all shops are at ground level with the exception of the small old Myer department store (similar to that in "Are You Being Served" which is 3 levels..... (ツ)
      Launceston city center is the heart of our city but sometimes parking space and fees make some people complain about shopping in the CBD.
      It is such a beautiful old city with amazing architecture worth while of everything though.

    • @tomedwards81
      @tomedwards81 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MrHelidude thanks for your reply! As I said we’re considering moving to Launceston. I’m a bit worried about moving somewhere that’s inland because we currently live by the coast in Queensland and the kids love the beach. Being riverside, does it feel like there’s plenty of water around in Launceston or is it very much a landlocked kind of place?

    • @MrHelidude
      @MrHelidude  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No seaside here but plenty of snow near by in winter month. Ha ha
      Have to come and see for yourself in winter before you decide to move or the kids might leave home early. LOL ..... (◕︵◕)

    • @tomedwards81
      @tomedwards81 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MrHelidude yes we’ll try to make it down for a holiday sometime. We spent a couple of months apple picking and travelling around Tassie years ago and loved the island but we were only in Launceston for a day. We come from the UK originally and find Queensland too hot to enjoy the outdoors, so the Tassie climate is perfect. Do you think there’s enough to keep a young family occupied in Launceston itself?

    • @MrHelidude
      @MrHelidude  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is plenty to do in Launceston but most young people tend to move interstate to find work and explore their adulthood it seems.... (◕︿◕✿)

  • @JimNicholls
    @JimNicholls 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just caught up with this, Nara. It looks a very pleasant and interesting city, although rather old-fashioned - all those rows of shops in the city centre especially. Here, most of the shops are in a few big malls, which is boring as they're all the same. A commentary would have been good, so maybe next time!?

    • @MrHelidude
      @MrHelidude  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha ah. Jim ! Me speak ?? Not if I can avoid it. Heheheheheh. I don't like my own voice and I don't think anyone else would either. LOL . Ha ha.
      It is true our shops are like the good old fassioned days. Really nice. It is good to have big modern malls also though but I think that most people here will be happy to lag behind a little compared to the big cities. Makes Launceston quite unique and I think that is what a lot of visitors also like about our small place...... (◐.̃◐)

    Except for driving on the wrong side of the road, this looks like Anytown, USA. Even the businesses are American: Xerox, Goodyear, Dominos, Coca Cola, Target, Staples, etc. It's like Twilight Zone. One day you wake up, go outside, everything looks the same. Except everyone's driving on the *wrong side of the road*. Well, almost everyone. The one black car at 13:23 forgot about the elaborate hoax and was momentarily driving on the *right* side of the road. Then he realized and quickly switched to the wrong side. A glitch in the Matrix perhaps?

      ***** Thank you for the kind response :) And thanks for posting this video.
      I came across your video as I was looking to learn about Tasmania. And the reason for that was that my very brief search of cities/regions that stay cool throughout the year turned up Tasmania. Would you say that's a fair characterization? In any case, Launceston looks like a beautiful town. Incidentally, I live in San Diego :)

    • @MrHelidude
      @MrHelidude  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh ! I would love to visit and see San Diego one day. So many nice things there especially the perfect weather. LOL .... (ツ)
      The closest I have been is to Huntington beach. Ha ha.
      Here in Northern Tasmania it can get quite hot in summer time (December - February), up and above 80°F .
      The sun is so very bright here due to no pollution whatsoever and that radiant heat is a burner in summer. Even in winter on a good day with the sun out I would be happy to wear a T-shirt when the temperature is around the mid 50's.
      Within an hour or so we can get sunburned quite badly so being outdoors for a short while could therefore mean putting on some sunscreen ........ (◕‿◕) ,,

    • @morpheus6749
      @morpheus6749 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** That is rather hot, especially for my taste. Sounds like San Diego temperatures 9 months of the year lol. I suppose "perfect" is relative. To most people's taste San Diego is just about perfect. But my ideal temperature is about 15 degrees colder than most people's :) Like about 62°F. I absolutely dread San Diego's fall season. The hottest months here are Sep thru November, and it can easily get above 100°F, 3 miles or more inland. Not that it's much better on the shore at that time. Hence my search for cooler climes. Today I learned that "summer" is the #2 myth in Scotland, meaning basically non-existent :D Sounds like my kind of place. I'll have to check it out.

    • @MrHelidude
      @MrHelidude  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am quite comfortable at 65°F - 77°F as long as the sun is out .

      Hi George. . .Launceston was settled by Europeans in 1806 and is one of Australia's oldest cities . . .
      Launceston was first called Patersonia but then was later renamed Launceston in honour of a Governor who was born in Launceston, Cornwall, UK ......... (ツ)

      probably the same as in New Zealand, they eventually fall through the grid. Unless you are a Maori and get special government treatment, you won't have a chance...
