Aluminum snow guards work great on my standing seam metal roof and they're not very expensive. They're fastened with gasket screws in the top of the seams. Of course they could be mounted with non-penetrating clamps instead. One thing about the clamps though, is that they DO deform the standing seams a lot! And I don't know what the metal roof warranties generally say about that. Once you tighten the clamps down which squeeze and permanently deform the seams, I don't know if the metal panels can still be easily pulled apart if you needed to replace one panel.
2010 home metal roof A frame center loft centerline faces east west into the lower main roof centerline North south creating 4 valleys. No one told me I needed to be raking off the snow so now there are 4 glaciers one in each valley slowly descending and destroying the A frame tearing the raised ribs open . I have a roofer now coming on Monday so my question is. with the A frame section and opposing angles how would I fence, into the valley maybe? either that or in addition to blowing out my driveways I need to add roof raking?
What are the best type of snow guard where there are lot's of leaves over or around a roof that fall on the roof in the fall. I just removed a channel type( believe you would call them) because they where constantly plugging up with leaves and debris from the tree's. What would you suggest? thanks
Your video didn't include the typre of snow guard that clamps to a standing seam metal roof ON the standing seams. And I'm talking about the same type that screws to a panel but this type instead clamps to the standing seam the same way snow bars do. In addition your video does little to explain the locations where snow guards need to go in a staggered pattern.
I have an aluminum standing seam roof in Maine. This past winter snow broke off the PVC vent pipe on the roof. What would be a solution to stop this from happening again? Are aluminum snow rails available in colors ( roof is a dark brown)? I have read that stainless steel rails like the ones in your video can cause a metal interaction ( stainless steel touching aluminum causes galvanic corrosion). Would like to know your thoughts.
About three years ago, I had a metal roof installed! For the past two years, when the snow is melting, it hangs over the gutters, melting slowly and forming icicles! I found out that the contractor did not mention nor suggested any type of snow guards, clips or rails and that is why this is happening. I live in NE Pennsylvania. I was not able to paste a copy of the roof. Please advise!
I just had an estimate for a new metal roof via email and it included snow bars. My aunt (who used this same contractor), opted out of snow guards. I wasn't sure if I really needed them or not, but I haven't replied back telling them not to install them. But since I live in ne Ohio, it may be a good idea. Plus, it was listed as bars and not clips, so that will be better.
will this help with the snow damaging ur gutters..cause the snow comes down and messing gutters up. Roof came with house but was wondering how can I stop it from damaging the gutters because I will be replacing my gutters soon. Also is there a specific gutter size or brand that is made to compensate the amount of water coming off the roof when it rains?
My tin roof is a 5V tin and not standing seam. In the South we don’t get a lot of snow and ice but when we do it literally destroys my gutters. What would you recommend? Thanks!
Thank you for this. I looked to find SOMEONE that would agree this is a horrible idea. Even in the news right now (Dec 2024), roofs are caving in from the weight of snow in Pennsylvanian.

Thank you for your service and roof info
Enjoyed the video. I’m an editor for roofing articles but I’m in south Texas so I’m ignorant about snow guards!
We have a metal roof however the style is more of a spanish tile look, wavy if you will.We need a snow guard over our solarium room.
Did u get them installed over ur solarium room?
S-5! Happy to send you a sample
Awesome!
How bad do leafs build up behind them? Does rain water splash over the gutter from the bottom run?
I always see these on steep roofs. I have a 3' rise on a 12' span. Does that affect what kind of snow guards I can use?

Where do you start snow guards on a roof with a 4'-5' overhang. Also where do you stop going up the roof.

I would recommend getting another contractor out to install snow guards. Hope this helps!

As far as I know you should never use gutters with a metal roof. When snow slides off they tear the gutters off.
Do the clip stay put ? I worry about wind knocking them loose over time. We live in a higher altitude climate with plenty of wind

Very helpful video but I have liked it if he could have shown an actual installation of a snow bar.
What would you recommend for the F Wave roof?

I would suggest getting a larger size gutter and/ or making sure they stay cleaned out from other debris!
I prefer the snow guards that Rudan Roofing use.
But won't the snow back up on the roof causing more snow weight ?

But, maybe metal roofs are more dangerous for it falling all at once, not sure, but it may make sense. I have the standard roof.
Two seconds in and I'm sure I've found the right vidio..
A lot of metal roofs are not standing seam…
O
I rather hire a professional who knows how to do it
