I grew up not far away in West Derby, Liverpool around this time, and I remember that a bunch of us would go to St Helens regularly - they had something of a scene going on, I saw the HouseMartins about 6 times in various pubs over there, played a gig with the early iteration of The La's, and everywhere you turned there were people forming bands, doing stand-up or performance art. They converted an old chapel into a very cool arts venue - it was called the Citadel. I'm assuming that it no longer exists...
Much better back then. The people look busy and more alive than these days too. This was before drugs took off big time, both street drugs and pharmaceuticals...Now many, many are drugged one way or another.
Fantastic video this, Anthony. My childhood

Wow, that is on Crowther Street, nice footage. I wish there was more stuff like this knocking about. Thanks for sharing xD
Better times back then.
I was 15 when this was filmed, which doesn't feel that long ago, it just looks really ancient.
Thanks so much for posting this.

Not one mobile phone, people actually looked at each other.
8:00 No way, pissy pants Frank🤣
The difference compared to 2024 is stark. The town is utterly dead compared to the 1970's 1980s and early 1990s.
