      I would give the nod to Possessed to the start of the genre. Both bands started about the same time, but Possessed released their debut album more than a year earlier than Death. But, then again, in the late 80's there was was a saying that Death is the first name in death metal.

    I’ve been listening to Slayer for 30 years. Seen them live many times and seeing them again in September. Tom ‘s vocals perfectly suit the bands music. That particular song you reacted to, represents chaos and the devil reigning supreme over earth. The vocals and their abruptness, match the brutality of the music precisely. Good reaction 🤘

    • @ChemicalReactions
      @ChemicalReactions  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it just takes a bit of time to get used to Tom's vocals. I now couldn't imagine Slayer with any other vocals.

    • @simongordon9239
      @simongordon9239 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ChemicalReactions! Absolutely. Although Tom isn’t a gifted vocalist, he suits Slayer’s brand of metal chaos. He’s a great frontman live and his smile is infectious. Taking my wife for her first live experience in September 😂🤘

    • @WhatDayIsItTrumpDay
      @WhatDayIsItTrumpDay 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Like Juliette, I beg to differ about Tom's vocals. They have never fit the music. They are almost spoken vocals.
      Do yourself a favor and listen to the Greek band Suicidal Angel's. Slayer-like music, but with a grittier thrashy vocal. A good song to try out first is Beggar of Scorn off of their 3rd album.

    • @simongordon9239
      @simongordon9239 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      David Molinarolo All just opinions mate. I wouldn’t want anyone other than Tom, as the Slayer vocalist. As I said, in my opinion, his vocals perfectly suit Slayer’s chaotic style of music. Is he a Bruce Dickinson or Geoff Tate? No, but he doesn’t need to be, with that back drop of aggressive music.

    • @Daniel-fo2qf
      @Daniel-fo2qf 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@simongordon9239 Agreed, If you want perfect pitch or operatic vocals then you are listening to the wrong band. Tom has and always will be the voice of Slayer. Slayer choose to take the route of an extreme thrash band and their music is characterized by raw angry fast riffs and harsh hellish vocals, those are the defining aspects of Slayer's music. Also as far as Slayer songs go Raining blood doesn't really have a lot of lyrics so it it doesn't show all of what Tom can do.

    The voice is an instrument of sounds. In a great song every instrument plays well together. Whether it is the lead or its echo or just an opposing sound. To maintain the atmosphere of a song all instruments must reflect off or coincide with the beat and rythm (song weaver). Random lyrics applied to a song doesn't cut it.

    School Of Metal suggestion that definitely must be done sooner or later is the Brazilian heavy metal band Sepultura. Their Album Arise released in 1991 is considered their masterpiece. Sepultura was formed by brothers Max Cavalera(vocals) and Igor Cavalera(drums) in 1984. The entire album is great and for school of metal I recommend Dead Embryonic Cells or Desperate Cry.

    Here's the meaning according to Jeff Hanneman: "Hanneman explained that "it's about a guy who's in Purgatory 'cause he was cast out of Heaven. He's waiting for revenge and wants to fuck that place up." King later said that "the rest of the song explains what happens when he starts fucking people up. The lyrics 'Return to power draws near' is because he's waiting to get strong enough again to overthrow Heaven. And then 'Fall into me, the sky's crimson tears' is everybody's blood flowing into him. So basically, 'Raining Blood' is all the angels' blood falling on him."

    Been listening to Slayer since 1984 when a friend and I drove up to New Jersey to visit the flea market where Jon Zazula (founder of Megaforce Records) had a stall where he sold metal records. We asked him for a recommendation and he handed us Slayer's Show No Mercy. I liked their earlier stuff where Tom's voice was better and Reign In Blood is still one of my favorite thrash albums of all time. His voice got worse on the later albums and few of those hold my interest other than a good song here or there.

    Hint: read the story of Vlad Dracule then look at the lyrics and see if they have a different meaning to you. I don't know the band was going for that story, but its what i always thought of hearing the lyrics. Tom Arraya vocals have always set Slayer apart from every other band, and he has never claimed to be a singer. I think the vocals of Celtic Frost of Tom G Warrior are unique to them as well.

    Listen, there are songs you can hear individually and there are songs you must listen to as a group. And Raining Blood is in that special group, from Angel of Death to Raining Blood the album feels like one long, complicated song. The album is short but it hits you hard and leaves a lasting impression of true greatness. I can't see why someone would just listen to one of it's songs without the others

    Talk about Bound by Blood (see what I did there?). This family Reigns in Awesomeness!
    Even though I'm a huge supporter of this band (finally saw them live for the first time in Columbia, MD on May 14 - just over a month ago - for the first North American leg of their Farewell Tour), I will agree with you folks in the sense that their musicianship, at times, is what gets the band more praise than the vocals. But I do enjoy Tomás Araya's style, mainly because it is the archetypical revolutionary battle chant. By the way, he is my fellow South American (I was born in Lima, Perú and he in Viña Del Mar, Chile).

    My only issue with Slayer is their repetitive style......
    Slayer to my ears all/mostly sound the same (there are some variations), so it doesn't really matter which song you hear you'll get the same experience.. This doesn't make their music bad, but rather it makes it generic to the genre....
    There are certain sounds that bands create that you can almost instantly recognise... For example you can recognise Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Anthrax, almost instantly when you hear a song from them for the first time, but invariably their songs are unique/different so although they all have a similar sound, each song is different and give a different/unique experience.
    As for "handling it" what does that mean? Juliette just heard the music and vocals from Slayer for the first time, the next time she hears Slayer it will be the same experience, so really if she likes the music but not the vocals then there are other bands from the same genre (Thrash Metal) i.e. Early Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeath, Sodom, Overkill, that have similar sound but better vocals, that she could appreciate more, is that "handling it"? recognising what you like/appreciate about a specific genre, and being open to more, instead of closing yourself off to the experience because you didn't like one aspect of it... I think that's "handling it"..
    As an example, a first time listener to Pink Floyd starting on one of their "best" song's "The Great Gig in the Sky" would have a completely unrepresentative view of Floyd and their music, and no understanding of the song or the context of it, could they "handle it"?. I always tell people starting to get into Floyd, avoid any track/song that comes from the "Dark side of the Moon" album, leave it until your ready to experience an album in full, and make it the first album of theirs that you listen to. (I don't say this to re-actors though, as it is much funnier to see their blank stares and What the F* is this look! :D)
    Metal Tomatoes 65, generic band, generic music, but good in a mosh pit............ :)

    As a headbanger since the late 70's, it's amusing that all reaction channels all review the same songs, and funny yet not the best representations. To introduce someone to Slayer I would have selected Seasons in the Abyss. Maybe even 213, which is undeniably the best song about Jeff Dahmer.

    Been a metalhead for over 20 years and Slayer is still a bit lost on me. I immensely appreciate how innovative they were and how they pretty much invented extreme metal, but I enjoy a ton of bands they influenced more than them. I can also appreciate how "pure" an album Reign in Blood is; it has one speed, one attitude, and it just rolls over you like a freight train. But for the most part they don't do much for me. I can enjoy a song here and there and even enjoy playing some of them on guitar, but they're pretty far down my list of favorite metal bands.

    The unfortunate thing about Slayer in my opinion is that they peaked with this album, they either never tried to or just could never succeed at recreating the brutality and musicality they created with Reign In Blood. They were a great band for 1986 but couldn't find a way keep their music fresh and exciting, which granted is ok for some people, there are plenty of people who like them because they never changed, but personally I'd have liked some evolution. This is a cracking album though,I'd love to see you guys react to the song Postmortem.

    Nice video again, great to see kids discovering Metal like we did in our times. I heard Slayer for the first time 25 years ago, when I was in high school (well I think that's your equivalent, as I'm in Europe...), with Seasons in the Abyss and Dead Skin Mask. I'm not sure Raining Blood is the best song to be introduced to Slayer, especialy because of those vocals. In my mind, Araya express a lot in this song, but you have to know his way of singing first, because it's more subtle than just the yelling you can hear the first time(s) you play the song. And I agree with Juliet (hope it's the right way to write it...), 82% is far to be bad, especialy for a first take.
    May I suggest, to continue the School of Rock journey, a bit of Sepultura? Dead Embryonic Cells is probably one of my favorite, but perhaps ones would consider it's not the right one to start with, I don't know... Again, thanks for those videos, it's really entertaining ^_^ Oh and, BTW, CHEM SQUAD FTW xD xD xD

    Juliette hit the nail on the head with Araya's vocals. She's absolutely right. They don't fit the music. It's the same reaction I have with them. And I've been a metalhead since 1987, and grew up with the 80s thrash scene.
    So imagine if you had a band that played like Slayer, but had vocals that fit the music. Enter the late 2000s, and a band from Greece called Suicidal Angels. The vocals are rougher and have a modern thrash sound to them. For an example, check out the song Beggars of Scorn. VERY Slayer-like music, even more melodic too. And you'll agree that that vocals match better.
