Massey Ferguson 2244 Perkins First Start in Five Years

  • Gotta love the little Perkins 3 cylinder diesel !! Sits for years and pops right off like its supposed to. Preliminary checks like fuel and oil completed a quick bump or two on the starter with a screwdriver brings the old guy back to life !!
    I finally realize I need two lifetimes to repair all the tractors and equipment I have around here and that a lot of the stuff will not get the attention it needs. When I bought it the previous owner had disassembled everything you see here that has been removed so it has no eletrics on it and no skid plate, drawbar and not even a dash panel or throttle. I did install a new temperature gauge and oil pressure gauge as we reassembled the engine with new pistons and rings after honing the cylinders. The rod bearings and main bearings checked ok as well. The big issue is the hydraulic clutches.
    This little crawler has a shuttle shift. Select the desired gear on the four speed transmission then slide the shuttle to forward or reverse, taking off with the foot clutch. Steering is by the steering clutch/brake handles. The system for the hydraulic clutches is separate from the hydraulic lift circuit. The clutch circuit has a 2 1/2 gallon reservoir and its own hydraulic pump driven off the timing gear. Testing the pressures show it to be too low to operate the clutches after the oil warms up. That's as far as I got before life got busy....so here it sits, lonely in the lean-to awaiting someone that has the time.

Seems the only stores the youngins can make change are the Amish ones. I’ve had kids 7-8 years old making change pronto. And I’ve helped senior high school clerks to make the right change. Saw a YT vid a few weeks ago where this young dude tries to steal a BMW, gets in and nothing happens. Finally he jumps out and runs. He couldn’t drive a standard tranny! Now ain’t that something? I cut the sides and the top off with the old Lincoln welder so I had my first hot rod on the farm !! I just couldn't get stuck where I needed to back out with no reverse. But boy I had fun with that car. I was about 14 or 15. All it was was a motor, windshield, front seat and wheels !! But I sure gave it he - - out there !! Sometimes guys kinda forget that if the right hose blows with the loader at the top of its lift, it will drop like a rock. I, like you Bryce, intend on keeping my options open for a much longer life !! Anytime I need to do engine work on a tractor, or just be under the loader, I use a loader prop.

    Just love that Perkins putt putt. I spent the summer of 1998 pushing pond slop around fields with a Massey 200b. (The predecessor to the 2244) We used a power pole gripped in the 4,N,1 bite and trundled up and down all summer on a droit wading through 2’ of pod slop.

I got it dismantled to the extent is is now then freshened up the motor and installed those gauges for oil and water pressure/temp. The biggest issue will be figuring out the hydraulic clutch/reverser set up.

    I ran into a machine that overheated the hydraulics.
    Turned out the high pressure relief valve was set too high and the spool valve was a closed center.
    People crank down on the relief thinking it will raise the operating pressure.
    It does. It also makes the pump work harder. The oil is forced through the small opening in the relief and heats up.
    An open center lets the flow dump back in the tank so less heat is generated.
    Another mistake is dumping the oil back into the tank right next to the pickup. The oil short circuits and doesn't have a chance to dump heat.
    You are selling the machine so this is just a "What I did". 😁😎

    Hi. What You think about MF 300 drott?

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well Drott made a good loader and MF made a darn good crawler, so not having experience on that specific loader, I'd think it'd have to be a pretty fair machine. The thing on some of the Perkins is availability of some of the parts. This little 3 cylinder 152 in this guy was easy to find repair parts for.
