    Hi folks, Jacob here. I want to thank BB for having me on, and all of BB's fans for being so inviting! I had a great time on the show. I also want to apologize for the audio issues I had during the stream. I think that most of the points where I cut out were brief enough that you should be able to connect the dots and figure out what I was saying. But if there are any spots where I got cut out and you want to know what I was saying, feel free to reply to this comment with a time stamp it and I'll offer a transcript.

    2:18:25 how you were talking about Aqua’s VA was how I felt about Aerith’s KH2/AC voice where in an interview she sounded normal but as Aerith, she sounded very monotone/tired and always made me think she was about to fall asleep.

      Ali Hillis is another good example of an actually good voice actress who got held back by bad or just questionable voice direction. While playing as Lightning in the XIII games, it almost feels like she was being told to act so stoically for the role, and then it turns out she was always capable of expressing herself when you hear her voice characters like Palutena in Kid Icarus Uprising

    Its like these guys knew every single problem I have with modern KH. KH3 is a fine game but the way people say that the story telling and voice acting is the same as the old games makes is something I really don't agree with. The way they told stories in the previous games really came off like it was good for both 10-15 year old audiences. I sure hope one day square will give KH games the same every they're giving to the new FF games from rectifying their mistakes. (As long as there's enough drive and creative freedom)

    • @94DARKOS
      @94DARKOS 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      In which case, I'd still argue in favor of Jacob's frustration since Braig/Xigbar's "arc" didn't really end in any way shape or form, or if it did it sure wasn't beautifully or skillfully done.
      Braig/Xigbar was following Xehanort lusting for the Keyblade and power, fought in the battle, then faked his death and turned out to be Luxu.
      That's not... what is even "ending" about his character arc, if it turns out the arc didn't even "begin" properly considering Braig was a fake persona Luxu created?
      Braig never came full circle as a character. He simply removed his mask and kept on going like it was no business of his anymore.

    No joke, Type-0 is a fun action game. Unlike FFXV, which Tabata also worked on, Type-0 actually has combat beyond hold the circle button. Actually, it has gameplay similar to BBS in that you have your basic attacks, two custom attack commands, and a custom recovery/defense command. The basic combos are also more advanced than just a basic three hit combo. There's combat variety with the TWELVE playable characters, all with unique weapons and combat styles. The main character, Ace, fights with cards, for crying out loud. After playing XV, I definitely recommend it just to see what the GOOD FNC video game action gameplay was like because it's a lot more fun than XV, imo.

    • @somethingsomething9006
      @somethingsomething9006 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you!
      Type 0's combat is super fun, all characters play so differently and allow you to approach combat however you choose, it's proof that Final Fantasy is capable of an, albeit somewhat basic, good combat system.
      I'm hoping XVI is going to have great combat, but with the battle director of DMCV behind it, I'm hyped.

    Re: Gackt preventing a Crisis Core re-release--as a casual Gackt fan I feel obligated to point out that there has never been any hint from any involved party that Gackt is the one preventing a Crisis Core re-release. Personally I have no doubt that that is the case, but he's never mentioned anything about it in any interview and neither has anyone at Square, not even a vague citation of "creative differences" that would be expected in a situation like that. If you have sources to the contrary I would love a link (not sarcasm, genuine interest), because it's something I've been curious about for years and have never been able to find legit info on. There are a lot of forum posts of people saying "Gackt won't let Square re-release CC" but zero actual interviews with Gackt or a Square employee to back that up. It's just a logical assumption people have made and I'd love to know how true it is, out of curiosity.
    It's worth noting that as of 2014, Gackt releases music under his self-owned independent record label, so I don't think there are any managerial issues preventing his likeness from being reused if he so desired. Like, if he and Square wanted to come to the table about licensing now, with the 7 Remake(s) in full swing, I don't know of any outside reason why they couldn't, or any other parties who would need to be involved in the negotiations. But Gackt doesn't need the money, if money is what the issue is, since commercially he's still very successful and is keeping busy with various projects. I think if anything he simply might not be interested. He is the sort of artist who prides himself on constantly challenging himself, taking on new projects and artistic formats, and in general never resting on his laurels, so I imagine he inherently wouldn't have much interest in re-negotiating his previous license with Square even if it would be easy money. And if there really *was* bad blood there and he didn't enjoy working with Square in the first place? Then yeah, forget about it. He has no pressing reason to give them his licensing rights again. Though, given how well 7R1 sold, and how it tried to gently fold in aspects of all of the previous Compilation, Gackt agreeing to come in to record a couple of lines of dialogue for a flashback or something in a future part would not surprise me in the slightest, either. That seems like something he might agree to do, if his and Square's relationship isn't sour--which of course it might be. We just don't know. Personally I think it has to be, because otherwise CC would have at least gotten a Vita port, but that's just my opinion.
    The great irony is that Genesis is such a terribly written character that remaking Crisis Core from the ground up with him entirely removed would result in a better narrative. But that's not what potential buyers of a CC remake would be after, and would hurt sales even more than the alternative, which would be 1) recasting Genesis's Japanese VA and re-recording all of his voice lines, 2) redoing his in-game model and replacing every scene with him in it, and 3) recreating from scratch every pre-rendered cutscene with his character. All of that is doable, but would turn a CC HD port from "quick easy money" to "An Actual Project Basically," and why should Square bother with that when people are going to buy 7R2 in droves regardless?

    • @ML-yn9yu
      @ML-yn9yu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. I don't think thats the case. if it was I think square would be smart enough to update the image so it doesn't look like him.

    If anything the low price for the FFXV dlcs should be that they didn't cost much to produce. One thing you're missing when comparing it to the pricing of the KH3 dlc is that XV uses an inhouse engine and doesn't have to pay royalties to an outside company. Even if XV's DLC did cost more than KH3's they keep a higher amount of their profit on it

    I'd say there's a balance between acknowledging that one creator is not responsible for all of the problems with something as interwoven and inherently marketing focus as a video game, and being too restrained when it comes to calling out creators for aspects that are more then likely, if not explicitly, the result of their weaknesses. Then again maybe I'm too overly critical since you guys go on to say that you don't think Nomura is a good writer.

    • @Cycadia
      @Cycadia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      There is so much to nitpick on this comment that I, of the time of writing, don't know where to begin. To preface, I believe there isn't any actual public account of the dlc sales so it is difficult to argue or have a say in regards to that. One thing that can be said is public opinion of said dlc was met with disappointment as there was a loss of expectations when it relates to the dlc contributing to the story as a whole. (to be fair the episodes got better as it went on. episode Gladio seemed one note, not well thought out, and can be seen as a side scrolling battle game but in 3D. Episode Prompto got better but the aiming mechanic felt clunky and the snow mobile part seemed gimmicky as there was no real reason to level up. The best episode by far in terms of adding to the story was episode ignis as it actually had a hand in changing the story's ending while also being fun, providing character development, and add to Luna's brother character. Episode Ardyn leaves a sour taste in everyone's mouth as it was promised to be 1 of 4 episodes planned for the next dlc however square decided not to give fans what they promised and canceled all further dlc and summed up the expected ending in to a book and moved on to other projects.) So in public opinion it was a failure and can be said that the dlc was not seen to be as profitable as other projects so with that reasoning, sales were a failure.

    • @OPLOmega
      @OPLOmega 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Cycadia Well, it's a combo of not giving people what they want and the fact that the announcement of the cancellation of further DLC was due to SE taking heavy financial losses. Combined with Tabata having announced his resignation from the company not long before that, they realistically began to cancel shit with FFXV DLC being the first on the chopping block.

    Even though Nomura didn't make 7R's ending, I still really dislike the direction the writers took with it.
    Badass? Yes. Necessary? Eh...no.

    I've been saying this for a while but ever since FF15 Square has absolutely tanked in quality with every game since. It's why I'm not even remotely interested in FF16 and why I'm kinda sad they're making NieR Replicant.

      FFXIV Shadowbringers, KH3 Remind, and FF7:Re aren't good? I can understand you not liking story decisions for FF:Re and especially KH3 base but FF7:Re is a well made game and Remind really showed that the current KH3 game does understand how to make good bosses and the combat update really uplifted the combat of KH3.

      I was in the exact same boat until I found out that it's being produced by the guy who oversees FFXIV (and I hear Shadowbringers is on par with the best of FF in the story department) and the combat is being directed by the guy who did DMCV's combat!
      That alone gives me some confidence.

      This is such an erroneous take that I can't even.
      Uninformed as you can get, too, as Square's not the developer of Replicant, as it wasn't with Automata, but the publisher.
      I'm not invalidating how you feel about it, it's just that, respectfully, at least 5 minutes of basic research can go a long way before you pretend you know a thing about game development. Especially when you're gonna shit talk and do a critique like this.

    I don't know, man. If the other games past one had guys who 'got it', KH would still be some basic bitch coming of age tale story. At least there's some wacky narrative about creation going on here versus 'boy leaves nest'.

    • @Nyzer_
      @Nyzer_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, no.
      For starters, many of Nomura's wacky concepts are nothing more than that - wacky concepts. The idea of Ansem being some other guy who got his identity stolen for basically no reason is a prime example of that: it adds literally nothing to the narrative and just makes discussing the history/characters unnecessarily confusing.
      Secondly, a ridiculously overcomplicated narrative is a really bad fit for a universe that is a mass Disney crossover - at least, one handled in this manner, where the Disney appearances are all heavily locked down and basically just feature either abridged retellings of the movies they're based on, or filler adventures, before the player leaves the world and doesn't look back. The simple and clean plot of KH1 was a beautifully perfect fit for a largely Disney universe.
      Third, even when you put the Disney content aside - Square fails to properly develop this wannabe complex narrative. Most of the Organization members in KH2 had nearly no impact on the main plot (and yes, this even includes Xaldin, since he only has an impact on the plot of Beast's Castle). The big badass Deep Dive scene from the secret ending of KH1 that was supposed to be a big teaser for KH2 doesn't even FEATURE in KH2 - we get some clips from it with nearly no context. The main plot of the series just spun its wheels for a decade before DDD came out. Most KH games feature massive amounts of filler, which seems like a Disney world complaint, until you go back and look how CoM did it - it had plot and character development happen BETWEEN the Disney worlds, and those Organization members were pretty strongly fleshed out. Look at the games since, and, well... I mean, just look at KH3, in which we kept getting teased with the realm of darkness until it was actually time to be allowed to do something there. In KH3 we're shown the apprentices reuniting with Ansem the Wise and the scene is set like it's a massively emotional moment... but everything we've ever seen before then, specifically KH2's Ansem Reports, has suggested that the apprentices ALL betrayed AtW. So, like, what the fuck are their actual loyalties? Who knows? The games sure as hell aren't interested in showing us, despite there having been multiple games that featured the apprentices/Organization that released in the 12 years between KH2 and KH3.
      The fact that you prefer a "wacky narrative" sounds like the unfortunate trend of big budget shows/movies over the last couple years that chased "subverting expectations". You place a lot of arbitrary value on this aspect, and fail to consider whether it actually works within the story that's being told. The idea matters more to you than the successful execution of it.
      There's a reason BB & Jacob specifically call out Nomura's interview about having to be the one to write KH because no one else gets the plot. It's because this isn't Metal Gear, in which all the wacky concepts have the room to breathe, to grow, to build up. It's because Nomura isn't Kojima, as Kojima can actually do an adequate (or better) job of tying his crazy ideas together coherently. Nomura doesn't have the creative freedom and the dedicated runtime in the KH games to pull this off, nor does he have the levelheadedness needed to rein in his completely unnecessary ideas such as the multiple Ansems, or the group death and "time singularity" nonsense from KH3, nor does he have the patience to put in the hard work to actually get his plot points from Point A to Point B rather than just having, say, Roxas deus ex machina teleport to the Keyblade Graveyard despite the game mentioning multiple times how specific things would need to be done to bring him back.
      The quality of the writing has been falling ever since KH2 (and this includes KH2). It's very apparent that Nomura is doing more and more of the writing himself, with fewer and fewer people around to edit his work, to tell him that certain ideas are ridiculous and unnecessary, to handle the boring grunt work of plot and character establishment/development.
      It doesn't help that Nomura himself has been stretched so thin for so long, either. So it's not just that he struggles with these aspects, it's that he doesn't have the time TO struggle with them.

      Eh. I'm happy with the boy leaves nest story that is KH1. That, and it's also a story where the light is good and the darkness is evil, not having characters who have reveled in committing acts of darkness have said acts waived like it was nothing.
