    Don't know if it's ever been asked but how do you decide on what music to play for your videos?

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      What a great question Karl! I was wondering when someone would ask that. Do you want the short or long answer?
      Short answer: It's all impulse and I really have no idea . . . lol.
      Long Answer: When I create a video, or get it in the can, I also become quite familiar with the content in my head (memory), and the music I have on hand in my soul (emotions). When I go to post production, I piece things together. Then I disengage and sleep on it.
      I review it the following day. If I am happy with the edit, I add in the music according to the mood I am in, and what I feel best represents how I felt at the time I built the model and made the video. I hope that helps to answer part of your question Karl . . . lol. The artists mind is complicated, as is all individual human sentient. ;-) Cheers ~ Boomer.

      Kool. You need to listen to John Hartford; Way down the River Road ... 2:20 long / Also seen on TH-cam is Gordon Lightfoot's; Canadian Railroad Trilogy ... 7:06 long.
      ( John Hartford was a master banjo / fiddle player. He wrote the song ' Gentle on my Mind ' made famous by Glen Campbell )

    The Brewery Build looks fantastic!
    Aside from the Barge Skip, I believe this is the first building you have constructed from beginning to end for us. This is really helpful especially for beginning modelers.
    The lighting fixtures are my favorite, very delicate and unique and will look great lighting the warehouse at night.
    Also, your explanation on how you choose the music for each video was interesting, but yet really not surprising. I have felt all along there was some real thought behind your selection of fine music that sets the mood for the viewer.
    It just enhances your extraordinary talent!
    CHEERS Boomer, you deserve it!

      Thank you Steven, I appreciate you sharing that. I am planning another smaller build series with the Brewery Extractor to finish things up on the North/West end of the layout. I think it is important because it will help for those who want to build other hopper type bins, etc. ~ Boomer.

    In _Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance_ Robert Pirsig describes what he calls "gumption traps"--things that stop us from pressing forward. It could be boredom, or more often for me a part of a project I'm not certain about, or that presents risks to money, materials, or my fragile ego. It's not just in modeling--my life has been filled with 95%-completed projects and now in retirement I still struggle to push on to completion. You seem to have a good way of working through the psychological snags. This brewery-flat build has seemed like a kind of sprint. I need to sprint more and plod less.

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is a strange phenomena, the 95% finish dilemma. I think it has something to do with not wanting to let go of the project as well. After all, we gave birth to it and once we finish it , it's done right? Kind of like letting a relationship go that you cherish deeply or something. Anyway, It always feels good when we grind through the last 5% and stand back and look at it. ;-) Thanks for sharing. Cheers.

    I love how the size of the Brewery and barge ramp make the Locos on the embankment look almost small and insignificant. Exquisite use of compression and depth of field!

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You noticed that eh? I like it as well. At first, I was concerned how things might look - maybe a little congested. However, it actually makes the layout feel larger in terms of the scale effect and compressed depth of field, as you mentioned. It feels right as you move around the layout while focusing in on the primary features. I feel like it actually works well. Thanks for sharing that. Cheers.

    The brewery build has been really helpful - I scratch build a little, and some of the techniques you've shown here I will be trying, especially using the 'chisel' blade knife - I have one but never thought to use it!
    I'm looking forward to the river segment - I had been considering clear epoxy resin and your comments a few videos back have made me rethink a bit. I'm interested to see how you create the river.

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Nick. The chisel blade is essential in this game. In regards to the river, I am not a "resin" guy. Some use it to great success, but I have no interest in it. I will be painting the river with a series of glazes (transparent layers), and then a gloss coat with subtle texture to finish. It's more work than resin (in some cases). The only reason to use resin in my experience, and believe me I have used it in the past for "larger" scales, is to show fish (and details) in the water, etc. Cheers.

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It will be painted "off" white, with a blue horizontal line (same as sky color) across the top. Weathering will be lot's of dirty washes with random streaks etc, until it "clicks," if you know what I mean. ;-) I will probably finish the other buildings first though, along with the extractor. This way I can settle into a season of painting once the main build for this section is done. Probably in the spring - which is not far away when you think about it. Cheers.

    • @boomerdiorama

      Thank you and thanks for asking. The Brewery flat is 6" high @ 45' scale feet in HO. The length is 37" @ 271' scale feet long (slightly shorter than the prototype). The actual depth varies from (left to right) @ 1/2" deep by 3-1/2" deep in a long taper (narrow slice of pie shape), from the backdrop. Cheers ~ Boomer.

    Great stuff Boomer, looking forward to the extractor build, what do you think they extracted, is it possible that it was left by the previous company prior to Labatt's purchase.

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is possible it was left over. However, there is a "Kraft" beer business there now (on the other side of the very large building). It is served from the other side with trucks. I asked one of the workers about the extractor and he told me that they recycle the "hops" for another purpose and truck it out. Cheers.

    What was the purpose of painting the blower duct screens green? Was it for a shadow effect?

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I painted the light box lenses to create a more subdued filter to tone down the brightness of the LED's. Furthermore, I also like a little accent of green color to mirror the grass on the bank of the river. ;-) Cheers.

    The one thing that keeps hitting me as I have watched the progress of the Brewery Flat is that you have added all your details, but not one of them has been painted.
    I have grown up with the concept that you paint the details separately from the main structure to avoid any paint overflow in either direction. Also, to paint the main structure before adding details, although that sometimes causes problem in keeping the area that details need to be glued to free from the paint, but tape covers most of those problems. This, in my experience allows for nice even coats of paint on walls, especially when using an air brush, and then the details are added last. Weathering is, of course, done after all construction.
    I have to assume that your painting hand is very steady to ensure that the details are painted correctly, without overflow onto the wall, or you have yet another trick to minimise the issue.
    Looking forward to seeing how you do this step in the development of the buildings.

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank You. It doesn't matter to me. I can paint it all with a airbrush just like Glover Road. If I need to touch up, I use a traditional brush or mask. You can achieve a lot when you use thin layers of paint. Cheers.

    I was thinking as you made those light boxes how cool it would be if they were actually lights, and you put them in. Nice touch with the green tinted lens, probably make them look more realistic. I know you mention it in one of the videos but I can't find it, what is the wood you used as the base for this model?

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure what you mean because I did put LED's in them. It's in the video. The base plywood for the Brewery is 3/8 (7-ply) Baltic Birch. Cheers.

    I’ll second all the positive comments on the brewery build. I think you mentioned a while ago, but what are you running for your gravity feed airbrush and compressor combo again? A lot of opinions out there I’m finding. Don’t want to over spend, also don’t want to end up with a throw away. It’s a decision 3 decades in the making so trying to get in the research!

    So is there enough room for an out of service rail?

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Excellent point and observation. Unfortunately it is kind of tight. In a perfect world , hindsight would have had me add two extra inches during the design phase. But how could I have known? Every single inch of depth was a compromise in the overall footprint. Too late now though, unless I radically alter the area. Since the decision is made, I might pile up some ties and rail with overgrown (tall) grass to cheat the depth a little. Sorry to disappoint, I feel the same way about it as well. Nevertheless, in film, these things happen all the time and we find artistic (license) solutions. ;-) Cheers. ~ Boomer.

    Toughest at the end with the stairs?
    When possible, considering to plan the hardest within the first stages of a project. Struggling? Pushing through? Discouraged? Not in the "Zone"?
    Attention please... The probability to hurt yourself increases...
    Besides all the flowers falling down on you via the comments...
    Did you find the reasons why you momentarily lost your motivation?
    Mes salutations et merci.
    P.S.: When you move the brewery ( 11:35 ), be attentive to the stairs !-)

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The stairs are tougher than you think. My models are built this way for good reason so I can man-handle them - I know my own clumsiness when it comes to the rigors of production ;-)
      There are lots of reasons to loose motivation. Especially when you have built thousands of models over a long career. Sometimes, when we focus on the forest we temporarily loose sight of the trees. The forest can be the day job, family, health, economics, etc., etc. ;-) Cheers.

    Next week the current owner of the brewery flat decides to remove the not needed outside details on the building, as he came to the view that your model of it has to much details for sitting in the back of a layout.
