Currently shooting my second short and planning my feature which will hopefully be shot in 2025, and I couldn't agree more, you just gotta do it! I have an OG Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, a gimbal and some portable lighting - budget friendly gear that previous generations of filmmakers could only dream of. I'm lucky to live in Scotland, which is basically just one big film set, so by scouting amazing, free locations my production value can be through the roof. The ONLY thing holding me back personally is my computer editing power, which I'll have to upgrade before I shoot a 70 odd minute feature. In saying that, new M3 generation Macs are insanely powerful! We've never had it so good as no budget filmmakers.
Thank you. After losing my job last november I've been writing and planning my nest feature (I made my first in 2018 which was a disaster). There are still fears that I will screw this up or not waiting for the right time when I have the appropriate level of knowledge to make it. After watching this video I realised my current status: I'm getting a lot more videography gigs recently because people see value in me, I have a wide network of people looking to do something film related, I have time now that I'm wasting worrying about whether to make something or keep learning filmmaking and as long as I have a story and script that is at a place that I can express myself to the fullest, It'll work. This is just the video I needed and I'll make a promise to myself right now to not let myself down. Thank you again.
Just wanted to say I love the video, especially in tandem with your series exhuming old Blackmagic cameras. It inspired me to dig out my old BMPCC from my parents storage. It's refreshing to see videos aimed at features as opposed to the avalanche of content on commercial videography and TH-cam channels. Keep up the good work.
A few years ago Will when you made this video I don't think anyone who knows anything about Cinema would have ever thought that Martin Scorsese!! Would have trouble getting funding!!! for one of his films!!!, that literally starred Robert De Niro and Al Pacino!!
Funny Im looking ro shoot my 3rd feature but and planning to do more of the tech work on this project as opposed to just directing. This brings a new set of challenges and fears but this has been very encouraging and helpful. Thanks
Hii Will. I will be directing my first feature film this summer and your video is just what i needed to keep me going 😊 Thank you and keep posting more content. Bless😊
Great vid, thank you. ive been holding back for years and now i thought, filming something is better than filming nothing. im enjoying the learning process. :)
Hi TJ! Thanks so much! And fantastic! I am glad you are getting the ball rolling for yourself! What is your project and is there anything you would like to see covered in a future video?
@@WillvonTagen im in the middle of editing a short film but i want to try and get a black and white film noir type scheme. but i think its just too bright. a vid on how to make black and white look good would be amazing. :)
@@WillvonTagen i learn as i go so iam grateful for any advice that i can apply - still trying to find out how to best make a scene appear to be at night in an inside setting like a hallway
You don’t how how helpful this was! Thanks for the awesome info. I appreciate it all. I legit have 6 grand to make a movie. I’ve done a ton of short films on my channel and done well in festivals but am taking the venture into making a feature. I actually just released a new shirt film called Fourth Wall. Let me know what you think
@@WillvonTagen I think I saw someone else mention this... Distribution. Things have changed so drastically in the world of distribution, I'm not sure what is true anymore. I've worked on a few movies that never get released. That is my biggest fear. Knowing that I'll be spending a year of my life and it all be for naught. Will you be walking us down that alley?
@@manchester8117 Totally! I have some good info to share on that--from self distributing theatrically to signing with a legitimate distributor and preparing your film for wide digital release. I'll try and ping you again here when I get that video out so you don't miss it :)
Hey Will, what do you film these videos on? bmpcc 4k? Would you shoot a feature on it? how much would you call it feature proof? :) Keep it up with these vids!
The number one thing that has always stopped me has been the fear of failure. It's kept me from doing so much in regards to film making. Once I let myself actually fail I learnt so much more.
Money. I've done my handful of shorts, so I feel I'm experienced enough and mentally ready to make my first feature. I know I can do it. I can direct actors and camera. I have a vision. I've already written it but I just want it to have good production value.
