  • Niddy-Noddies can be hard to find commercially, but it is so easy to make your own! In the following video, I show you how to make your own niddy-noddy out of PVC piping you can pick up at your local home improvement store. This type of niddy noddy is easy to store and take apart, making it possible to change the center bar to make different size skeins. At the time this video was filmed, all pieces were purchased for under $6. You will need: 2 - 1/2"x2' PVC Pipes (cut into 2 - 12" and 4 - 6" pieces) and 2 - 1/2" PVC TEE SXSXS pieces to create the minimum 4 foot niddy-noddy. To make the niddy noddy different sizes, you may want additional PVC piping and a few 1/2" Coupling SxS pieces.

    I love this! I went to my hardware store right away and got my supplies. I made it and have used it a cpl of times already! Love it! Works great! Thanks for sharing!

    So with the long piece 12", you get a 4 ft skein. With the long piece 1.5', you get a 1 yard skein. (The length of the skein is always ~4x as long as the long piece.)

    Thank you. I need to unwind a huge ball of coarse yarn, so that I can wash it. I’m hoping to soften it for easier use. I’m using 1/2” CPVC simply because I already had everything except the end caps. Excellent video.

      I'm so glad I could help! The end caps are useful if the edges of the pipe are rough so you don't catch the yarn on it, but if you sand the pipes then you probably don't need the caps.

      @@ChemKnitsTutorials After getting this reply, I was reading through the comments and ran across one calling this thing a Knitty Knotty. The name makes sense now, don’t you think? It takes the knots out of your knits. 😀

    I loved this and made 2 at the time you released it. The guy at Menards cut all the pieces for free! I did have to watch the video on how to use it a few times but that was just me. It's very easy!!! Thank you so much for sharing this.

      My pleasure! Sometimes our home depot and lowes don't have anyone around the cutting section. This is why I got a little cutter for myself so I can cut them at home. :) I have 2 now but I think I need a third at least.

    This is brilliant, thanks for posting. I had been eyeing a wooden niddy-noddy on Amazon for around $30. It was of course some lovely hardwood.
    So, I just got back from HomeDepot. The supplies cost $5.20. The guy in the plumbing supply aisle was very helpful and cut the pieces to size for me, all the while advising another customer about the hazards of using galvi with copper. I love hardware stores. I am delighted with my niddy-noddy. I will probably go back for a two foot length once I get the hang of using this.
    I was also admiring the copper pipe; so shiny now and it would develop a nice patina. Maybe it would work for this project, or it might be too heavy.

      YAY! I'm glad that you did it. I think my favorite feature of these PVC pipe niddy noddies (besides laying flat and changing the size) is that I can get them wet. This has come in handy a lot!

    • @rbhughbanks
      @rbhughbanks ปีที่แล้ว

      Don’t use copper. That patina will get on your yarn and ruin it.

    Brilliant, totally easy to make, materials around $7.50 for all including two couplers at Lowes.

    Going to get my pvc next week because I have several dyed skeins I need to tidy up.

      YAY! I now have 3-4. I'm not entirely sure, but I have a lot of pieces of varying sizes. I love the PVC because it makes attaching the first end easy, and they can get wet without warping.

    Hi, if you were doing bulky yarn what size knitty knotty should I make?

  • @latitude1904
    @latitude1904 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wouldnt the skeins be slightly longer since you wrap slightly diagonally (on the hypotenuse actually).

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Slightly maybe, but still approximately within the range of 4 ft skeins. I know that it is a slight under estimate of length. (THe connectors also add some length)

      There’s also the factor of the yarn rebounding or recoiling once it comes off. There’s gonna be some shrinkage I would imagine.🤔

    Ok so this is a dumb question because I'm a new spinner but how do you even get an 8' skein of yarn? I have 3 typical bobbins so do I need to get a super bobbin? I can get a super flyer and bobbins but is that the only way to spin that length? Or maybe your example was a single?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this demonstration I was using a commercial super bulky skein of yarn, not yarn that I had dyed. Is your question how to spin enough yarn to make a super bulky 8' skein? If I'm spinning a DK/Worsted sometimes I'll have hundreds of yards on my bobbin before winding it into the niddy noddy. If I want to make a 3 ply yarn, I'll ply on the wheel before winding onto the niddy noddy.

    • @ImGinaMarie
      @ImGinaMarie 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChemKnitsTutorials I see now. I thought you had spun the yarn yourself. I haven't filled a bobbin yet so maybe I don't' realize how much will actually fit on one..I have a kiwi 3 but I don't have the superflyer and bobbin yet for art yarn. Thanks for your help!

    OMG I got the PVC, all cut for me. Unfortunately I got one 2 foot pieces and 4 one foot pieces! It’s HUGE!! What a dummy! And I had my phone with me and could have looked it up! Power saw, here I come! LOL

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, in one niddy noddy (4 ft skein) I have 1 - 12", and 4 - 6" sections. The 6" sections could technically be shorter, but this was a dimension that made sense from what I purchased. :) You have a power saw? I'm jealous!

    They’re not skeins, they’re hanks, skeins are those things you buy where you can pull from the middle.

    Do you know the yard of pass around this particular size of niddy-noddy?

    Do u have a vid on how u use this and a vid on using a swift? I don’t have either . I would need these right if wanted my balls of yarn into skeins?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials

      Here is a super old video on using the niddy noddy: th-cam.com/video/W4NDnMrTPHw/w-d-xo.html
      Here is a livestream of me using the niddy noddy real time: th-cam.com/video/Jw0M9wSsFAQ/w-d-xo.html In this you can also see the swift that I use. It is an umbrella swift which holds the circular skein and prevents tangles when winding.
      You don't need a swift to wind a ball into a skein - although it would be handy when you want to go from skein to ball in the end. When I started dyeing yarn I used the back of a chair or the backs of two chairs to wind my skeins. The PVC pipe niddy noddy is helpful though because it is super inexpensive. I hope this helps!

      ChemKnits Tutorials ya I saw the vid with using the pvc pipes niddy but didn’t see the live one.
      I do have a ball winder that use a lot for winding into cakes . 😁

    1.5 foot would give you a 2 yard skein. Sorry for that typo!

      @juliamartin4141 6 ปีที่แล้ว
