    what a warrior..that's all I can say to describe Elvis and the circumstances that he skated in. Sadly he was never the same after this skate...it broke him. I remember as a kid recording this FS on VHS because it was in the middle of the night for me and when I woke up to watch it and seeing Elvis win silver was heartbreaking but nonetheless, for me this was as good as gold for most of his fans but I bet for Elvis nothing else mattered besides the gold medal.

      I watched this live too. I can remember Chris Cuthbert's call on CBC now...Heartbreak on Valentine's Day.
      What a fighter.

    I will never know how he got through this program. Absolutely unbelievable. I mean, how? How do you do a triple axel-triple toe then another triple axel more than halfway through the program on a groin pull? He couldn’t even skate to the podium after or put his own guards on.

      I believe other coaches and people inside figure skating have said that he was the best "trained" athlete they've ever seen and one of the toughest mentally, in ANY sport, of any athlete. I think he often hid injuries and illness.

    My heart breaks for Elvis in this clip: seeing the pain in face - especially during the KISS & CRY. I can tell he was in physical pain but I wonder if those marks for presentation added to his feelings. If you watch the program - he actually skated well and the presentation wasn't bad at all. I think those marks were a bit low considering he wasn't sloppy at all (but rather neat and clean) - and that probably wasn't easy to do since he was feeling badly. (Can you just imagine how much better this performance would have been - and again it was actually very, very good - if he HADN'T been in so much pain???? (It would have been GOLD for Elvis - no doubt about it).

      Cher Cher Agreed...you could hear his coach tell him there wasn't anything g else be could of done out there, he skated hospital program so well.

    • @L1623VP
      @L1623VP 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I never understood. Did he get injured between the SP and LP? He skated his SP with no difficulty at all, and no pain afterward in the Kiss & Cry.
      I was never a Stojko fan, but 1998 was his year to win gold. He wasn't robbed in 1994. Urmanov is a superior skater to him. Kulik, however, was still very young and unpolished in Nagano. Stojko's strength, prowess and stage presence, along with his consistency should have been more than enough to put him over Kulik's clean, but immature performance both the SP and LP, but unfortunately, his injury held him back in the free skate, and Kulik rightfully won. Still, 98 was his best shot at gold, not 94, but it wasn't meant to be.

      lcowles I think he was putting on the fake injury because he knew he didn't win .

    • @L1623VP
      @L1623VP 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      No, he really was injured quite seriously. It was a groin injury that basically ended his career. He'd stay in amateur competition for four more years after this, but his jumps were never the same again, as he lost much of his consistency. It just seems so odd that he performed well and without any visible pain or limitation in the SP just a couple days earlier and then he's in agony here, especially in the kiss and cry. Maybe they shot him up with cortisone to get through. I don't know.

      Icowles, he injured his groin at Canadians at some point. He further aggravated it here.
