Thank you so much for this. I love listening to the joy with you show us how you play, both senses of that word with the music. You would have been the piano/theory teacher I wish I had found years ago.

This is such a lovely song; it was my mom's & dad's song. Nice singing! And I like your harmonic thinking on this, too! The chromatic harmony going downward -- C-E, B-D#, Bb-D, Bb-Db, A-C -- very nice. And then using those same pitches while adding different stylistic elements. Keep making these excellent videos!

Funny this vid should appear as I’m working on my fathers arrangement of Home (When Shadows Fall). He was born in 1911 and learned the song shortly after its release in 1931. He used many of the ‘old timey’ voicing you discussed. They are a pleasure to play and listen to. Ty for this gem of a lesson.

This brought back memories of when I had to play this tune in grad school and reharm it and do it in multiple keys. Good memories except when I had to do it in a lesson playing it through all keys one right after the other in time, really made my brain hurt but so worth it. Also this tune with Oscar Peterson and Sara Vaughn is so amazing.

Me needs to learn to play some s l o w piano just to listen and learn. Such a logical and undeniable layout of the truth in the harmonies of the spheres. Guitar is cool for wild single note lines and bends, but what a mess when it comes to theory hahaha!
Great lesson ... and thos old jazz songs !!! Pure goose bump generators!
What have the industry done to our music ...

This song is new to me. I find very little in the way of guitar covers of this song. I love the way you play and sing it; it inspired me to play it on guitar. Of course my Real Book doesn't include it.

Great insights here Aimee.. if you happen to write big band arrangements(since you demonstrated what trombones and saxes would do briefly) you must do lessons on that because there are very few resources on youtube for it.

At 13:20 you say having the G7#5 "can spark everything". I play guitar, and have been working on about 6 cover songs. A few weeks ago, I saw Beauty and the Beast and couldn't stop myself from learning the Gaston Song, and I noticed, every single one of the songs I love to play has the 7b13 chord, including that one! It's the same chord. Apparently, it's by far my favorite chord. And not only do my favorite songs to play all have this chord, but that part with it is my favorite part of each song! ITS AN AMAZING CHORD. Please do a video on it! I would love to hear more about your thoughts on it.
