  • An ex-Dagenham resident born a few months after the end of the World War II returns to his birthplace nearly 60 years later and reminisces about his boyhood on the Becontree estate. When you're done why not also take a look at Brian Hawkins's ebook 'When I Was a Boy in Dagenham' at www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0... ?

Amazing video Brian. The way you put it together, brilliant ! I'm 77 , been living here in Cornwall since 1982. But such memories of my life back in Dagenham. I moved to Cornwall for a better life Brian, and it has been a good life. But since I've hit my 70's my memory goes back more and more to my Essex days. But of course you can't go back, but it does remain in your head, happy times,

I was born in Dagenham in 1958…..my Dad started making Cine films in 1962. I still have them and it’s amazing to see how things have changed.

Thank you so much Brian for this little gem of a video. As a former Dagenham boy myself I can’t believe I’ve only just found it. I am a little younger than you but I am familiar with many of the references from film and music. The commentary on your early life was hilarious. I look forward to watching the rest of your videos.

I too lived on Lullington Rd. 1944 - 1964. We lived at 73 nearer the Hedgsmans Rd end. Went back in 2011 and was horrified at how all the neatly tended front gardens had been concreted over to accomodate cars. Alslo went to Finneymore infants and juniors. Then on to Goresbrook which has now been demolished

Terry Thomas You’ve said everything I always wanted to but couldn’t-
Born and raised there, I loved the place, , ,
Just give it back to the people it was built for.

Thanks for the info. The footage of the old Jo Richardson school site was shot in 2007. It seems that Roding Primary School now occupies that site, which was where my secondary school stood in the 1960s.

Dagenham used to be great. Born there. Would not go back. Not a place I'd bring up a family. Shame. Even eastbrook school. Gone.

Not the Dagenham I knew in the 60s and 70s, like everywhere all changed, such a shame no sense of heritage left, grew up in Stevens Road remember the beacon youth club Becontree avenue, left in the 80s and left Ilford in 2004, visited in 2006 seeing friends walked down old places only ghosts left

I was half expecting my uncle Alf (Bigden) to be in that as I know he also played for Jack at some point.
Good to see the old area. Sadly, my other uncle was the video man and he had tons of video of me and my family which has got passed on and maybe doesn't even exist now which is a real shame. He's gone now as are his siblings and for reasons I will never know, I'm not on speaking terms with his kids so, that's that. Families eh?
Loved the film, must have been good fun to make.
