    That's a very polite way of saying "git gud".

    I remember the legendary Vasily Alexeev, when he said he never squatted with anything heavier than 270 kilos, yet he had a 255-kilo C & J (the world record at that time in the old 110+ class), while another lifter would sometimes squat with 320+ yet he had a C & J around 220 kilos.
    Interestingly, the current world champion -- Georgia's Lasha Talakadze -- is known to be quite conservative when he trains the squat. I've watched a session where he worked up to 285 kilos for 3 doubles and the commentator said that this was unusual from him. Close to competition, I see Georgia's superheavies working up to a few doubles at 250 and stopping there. Squatting that kind of weight with good bar speed is probably enough for them to maintain their leg strength while saving their energy for when it counts.

    Im 52 yrs 5'3 weight 114lbs - back Squats 180lbs - Deadlifts 220 and front squats 150 (with a great form). However, I can't do snatches.
    I have the lower body strength but my mobility impairs me to do so. My hubby say is my hips and ankle mobility. I have seeing so many videos and I get it. The struggle is real!!!

      Over head squats working up in weight. Snatch balance (search on youtube). Vary your grip with these two at first.

    I don't have tons of regrets in life but back in 2013 when I moved from LA to the bay area I really wish I found a place in Oakland and got the chance to train with you Max in the back of Crossfit Oakland. I unfortunately could only find a place out in san rafel and so (and although I loved training with Freddy) I trained at Myles ahead in Petaluma instead. I've since do to employment and rent issues moved back to LA but if I could I'd love to move back up close to you and train with you. Max you're one of the best.

    could you get Chad wesly Smith to do a video on all the ebooks available on your website? I want to start training in the juggernaut method but there is alot of different books on your site I don't knw which ones to read first and idk if I need to read them all
    please clarify this in a future video. maybe give us a short description of each book and who would benefit from it and who wouldn't

    At the 7minute mark you mention 'other' to help develop strength besides the squat... anything else besides the belt squat??

  • @justingreen4244
    @justingreen4244 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I like how he said achieving a bigger squat is not the sport of weightlifting because at first and even second glance it sure does seem that way. Bigger back squat means bigger front squat, which means bigger clean, which means bigger snatch according to all of the ratios out there. But he is saying eventually it no longer has carry over to the lifts. I would add that if you are new or intermediate that raw strength should be your primary focus and that too much focus on weightlifting is literally just going to slow your strength gains down, which will over several years slow down how quickly you will excel at weightlifting. More weightlifting doesn't make you significantly better at weightlifting if you don't have adequate strength, which Max implied. It is much easier for a guy with a 200kg front squat to improve at weightlifting than a guy with a 100kg front squat. It is much easier to improve front squat through strength training than by weightlifting. So in the end, while it may seem counterintuitive, more weightlifting for new to intermediate strength guys is actually going to be counterproductive to getting better at weightlifting. So by this man's logic if increasing the squat is not the sport of weightlifting can lifters that do not have enough raw strength even technically be considered participants in the sport? Following this logic, perhaps there are multiple phases of a weightlifter's career then, one of which ought to focus on preparing an athlete (increasing strength) to eventually be able to participate in legitimate weightlifting training? One could engage in the action of weightlifting without raw strength but would not get very far if back squat was only 100kg. Over years of weightlifting and an occasional back squat day this 100kg squatter might develop a 140kg squat but if they had focused on increasing squat to 200kg in the beginning and then incorporated more advanced weightlifting the progress would be astronomically greater.

    Great video
    I am squatting 230kg and deadlifting 250kg but my snatch is 60ish and jerk is 85ish lol. Having trained for 6 years before learning the Olympic movements, my strength is decent but my S/C&J are laughable. Already I can see that strength does not endlessly transfer - there are other considerations

    • @TheTmshuman
      @TheTmshuman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My PR squat is 234kg and dead lift about 240kg. I have a 500lbs squat on my channel. First day I tried clean and jerk I managed a 120kg c&j and 80kg snatch. Horrific form. I still can’t hook grip and I’ve spent the last month trying to binge videos and correct my atrocious form. I have also had multiple sprains failing to ditch properly while tired but oh well. I will get a 315lbs c&j and 225lbs snatch if I rip my arms clean off doing it. You can too with Squat and deadlift like that. I’m also 235-250lbs at 5’11” so I have zero excuses. I’ve pretty much been stuck at a 320lbs bench for years so I’m trying something different for a while. Have you improved much since commenting? If so what helped?

    • @MatteoFitness
      @MatteoFitness 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because you don’t squat 230. You lowbar squat 230 which is basically a clean deadlift with the bar on your back.

    Good video and very insightful. How about one where you would show and analyze some other exercise methods for leg strength, other than front / back squat with some athletes? I know there is high interest for such video. Perhaps belt squats and you name it, what ever hidden gems you have in store. :) Keep up the great work.

      Puny Poppy there is going to be a methods video that expands on this one but there isn't a lot of novelty in the exercise selection. Back, front, belt are our staples.

  • @metalmikebot
    @metalmikebot 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not sure if I'm totally sold on the connection with absolute strength, since the Oly lifts are submaximal. Wouldn't it make more sense, as a rule of thumb, to train for more explosive strength with (say) your 10-12 rep max than to train in a more powerlifting-friendly 3-1 range, even right up to a competition?

    • @jordankroell
      @jordankroell 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you've ever seen anyone get caught in the bottom of a clean and can't stand up; that situation can be attributed to absolute strength (especially in the front squat). There was an OTC resident in the early 90's (He won his wt class in Jr's in 1994) who could clean more than he could front squat on a regular basis.
      Your car definitely doesn't need the most horsepower to win the race, but more horsepower definitely makes it easier to get down the road.

    • @JuggernautTrainingSystems
      @JuggernautTrainingSystems  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mike Doolittle training higher rep ranges consistently would have a negative effect on speed qualities and technical development. The list of champions without very good maximal strength is a short one.
